To start things off, did you know that most shark attacks aren't fatal.. the odds of a fatal shark attack are about 1 in 3.7 million.

There is a "Big Three" when it comes to shark attacks and those 3 are great whites, bull sharks, and tiger sharks. Due to them being such large species, they're capable of inflicting serious injuries to a victim, and are commonly found in areas where humans enter the water, and have teeth designed to shear rather than hold. The great white shark stands at the highest amount of shark attacks provoked on humans currently racking up around 354 unprovoked shark attack on human and boats

A shark attack occurred on Thursday 29th December in the east of Mauritius, near Flamingo Island. M.A.J.L., a 39-year-old Mauritian fisherman, was mauled by a shark, and only part of his body was recovered.

The pirogue that M. and four other fishermen were on capsized during the night. The other four managed to swim back to shore

Sharks often don't intend to eat humans, but they will if provoked or confused..sharks are very curious creatures and don't have the greatest eyesight which makes it hard for them to decipher certain figures from another..for example if you're laying on a surfboard with your arms or legs in the water, it may confuse the shark by it thinking you're it's typical prey, seals and such..this isn't tye only reason they may attack, they may simply want to know what you taste like :marseyslurpfast:

The Fargo tornado of 1957 was the third in a tornado family to move from Central North Dakota to Central Minnesota. Well known for being the most destructive and violent out of the family, the Fargo Tornado is also known for the deaths of the Munson family children where 6 children in one family were killed. The body of Jeanette is shown below, being carried by the 21 year old Richard Shaw. It was made worse knowing that these children stayed home, unable to escape the violent winds that would soon engulf the home, hiding under the kitchen table. Despite the insistence of their fellow neighbors earlier, they refused to leave, they had prepared a surprise birthday party for their mother. As it happened, Mercedes Munson had asked to get off work early, but the man who was to relieve her was half an hour late. Mercedes Munson was able to reach her 16-year-old daughter on the phone. But then the line abruptly went dead.

This tornado was the cornerstone of tornado research for Dr. Ted Fujita, Fujita would coin the terms “wall cloud”, “tail cloud” and “collar cloud” (NWS, 2019), which are still in use today. Likely if you've heard a series of words like this during tornado season, Fujita was probably the one who created it. He created new ways to research tornadoes such as including aerial photography and the use of satellite images and film. The 1957 Fargo tornado, despite being in an area not familiar to many Americans, was said to be the best documented tornado in history.

Happened on May 20, 2018, around 4:21 am on Rostovskoye Shosse, Krasnodar, Russia

Stanislav Yeromin (25) decided to go fishing. He went to his neighbors, Dmitriy Isayev (19) and his father Sergey Isayev (40). They got into Stanislavs VAZ-2112 and set off.

At around the same time, Vladislav Anosov, famous dentist and businessman, owner and ordinator of Center for Modern Dentistry DoctorStom (Центр современной стоматологии ДокторСтом) was driving drunk in his Mercedes S-Class. He had a fight with his wife the day before and was drinking heavily. Reportedly he was also being chased by the police.

On Rostovskoye Shosse he reached around 200 km/h. Then he crashed into the back of VAZ driven by Stanislav.

All three men were ejected from the vehicle. Stanislav, who was driving, and Dmitriy, who was sleeping on the back seat, died on spot. Sergey, who was seating in the front, was seriously injured, but he survived. Anosov wasn't even slightly injured.

Mother of Dmitriy, Ludmila Isayeva arrived first on the scene of the accident. Doctors forbidden her telling Sergey that their son had died. All this time, no one was allowed to come near Anosov, he was being guarded by five policemen.

"I asked, why he wasn't taken for a drinking test. They told me, that he refused to take one. They put him on a front seat of a police car, where he was talking on the phone with someone. I think he might be on drugs."

Said Ludmila

According to her, the investigation was almost not existing and Anosov was allowed to have a house arrest.

"Only after we found an attorney, the investigator said, that he was waiting for me."

She told Bloknot Krasnodara she was afraid, that person with a lot of money can avoid responsibility. Also Anosov tried negotiating with victims families through his attorney.

"His attorney called us and offered an agreement. We refused."

Spokesman of local police, Artem Konovalenko, confirmed that Anosov was drunk, when the accident occured and that Mercedes significantly exceeded the speed limit. He didn't confirm that Mercedes was being chased by the police tho.

Sergey, the only passenger that survived, learned about his sons death from the wife of Anosov. She was the first person to contact victims families and she confirmed that her husband got drunk and drove off in his Mercedes after a fight with her.

"About my sons death, I learned from his (Anosov's) wife. I was in a hospital, when she entered the room and told me: You son was buried today. I told her, that I didn't knew he died."

Said Sergey

Ludmila says that the reason for the tragedy may be a conflict on Anosovs family.

Anosov's wife called me and asked for a meeting. When we met, she started crying, begging for forgiveness. She told me it was all her fault, because she started a fight with him. She told me: He wanted to leave the family, but we have four children. He got angry because of this and that's why all this had happened.

In the end, Anosov was sentenced to four years suspended sentence. The court took into account the circumstances: Anosov plead guilty, showed sincere repentance, had four underage children and paid compensations for material and moral damage to the victims.

In 1986, Pennsylvania State Treasurer Budd Dwyer was convicted of bribery and was to be sentenced to 55 years in prison.

The day before his sentencing, Jan. 22, 1987, Dwyer held a press conference where he maintained his innocence. Some stations were carrying the event live.

At one point during the news conference, Dwyer pulled out a .357 revolver from an envelope and took his life in front of the cameras.

Robert Budd Dwyer

Robert Budd Dwyer (November 21, 1939 – January 22, 1987) was an American politician. He served from 1965 to 1971 as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and from 1971 to 1981 as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate representing the state's 50th district. Dwyer then served as the 70th state treasurer of Pennsylvania from January 20, 1981, until January 22, 1987.

Dwyer was born on November 21, 1939, in St. Charles, Missouri. He graduated in 1961 with an A.B. in Political Science and Accounting from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Beta Chi chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. After earning a master's degree in education in 1963, he taught social studies and coached football at Cambridge Springs High School.

Initial Government Activity

A Republican, Dwyer became active in politics. He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from the 6th district (although seats were apportioned by county before 1969) in 1964 and was reelected in 1966 and 1968. In 1970, while still a State Representative, Dwyer campaigned to become a Pennsylvania State Senator for the Senate's 50th district, and won. Soon after his victory he resigned as Representative and was sworn in as Senator in January 1971.

Pennsylvania Treasurer

After being elected two additional terms in 1974 and 1978, Dwyer decided to try for a statewide office and in 1980 campaigned for and won the office of Pennsylvania Treasurer that had been held by Robert E. Casey since 1976. He campaigned for a second and last term in 1984 and won reelection, defeating Democratic nominee and former auditor general Al Benedict.

Bribery Scandal

From 1979 to 1981, before Dwyer was state treasurer, public employees of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania overpaid millions of dollars in Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes (FICA). As a result, the state required an accounting company to determine refunds for its employees. Dwyer awarded the no-bid $4.6 million contract to Computer Technology Associates (CTA), a California-based company, owned by John Torquato Jr., a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on May 10, 1984.

During early 1984, Dennis Schatzman, deputy comptroller of Pittsburgh Public Schools, noticed financial discrepancies in the CTA contract, and wrote to Pittsburgh school officials regarding these. Schatzman later contacted officials of the accounting company Arthur Young and Associates, who confirmed that the no-bid CTA contract was overpriced by millions of dollars. In June 1984 the Office of the Pennsylvania Auditor General informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the alleged bribery that occurred during the awarding of the contract. During late July 1984, Janice R. Kincaid, a former CTA employee, released a sworn statement claiming that Dwyer awarded the contract to CTA because he was promised a $300,000 kickback by the company.

Dwyer's awarding of the CTA contract was investigated by federal prosecutors. Upon learning of this investigation, Dwyer rescinded the contract with CTA on July 11, 1984. Subsequently, Dwyer repeatedly attempted to stop, divert and forestall the investigation, stating that the U.S. attorney had neither the authority nor evidence to pursue prosecution. Dwyer later admitted to telling his staff to withhold request for proposal (RFP) information from the U.S. attorney and the FBI during the investigation. After being indicted by a federal grand jury, Dwyer was finally charged with agreeing to receive a kickback of $300,000 in return for awarding CTA the contract.

Dwyer stated that he offered to take a polygraph test but only on the condition that if he passed it, he would not be indicted. The state rejected Dwyer's offer. Prior to Dwyer's indictment, on October 22, 1984, a grand jury indicted Torquato, Torquato's attorney William T. Smith, Judy Smith, Alan R. Stoneman, and David Herbert. At Smith's 1985 trial, Smith, who was a friend of Dwyer's, testified that he did not bribe Dwyer, and instead that Torquato offered Dwyer a campaign contribution in return for the CTA contract, yet Dwyer rejected Torquato's offer. In contrast, Torquato testified that Smith offered Dwyer a $300,000 bribe in return for the CTA contract. Dwyer, acting as a defense witness for Smith at Smith's trial, denied that he was offered any contribution at all. In August 1984, Smith failed a polygraph test when he stated that he did not bribe Dwyer or any state official. However, prior to Smith's trial, on October 27, 1984 (four days after Smith's indictment), Smith confessed to offering Dwyer a bribe, and stated that Dwyer accepted this offer.

“ I met with Dwyer in his office and at the insistence of Torquato offered to give him $300,000 if he signed a contract with CTA LTD. Dwyer talked about $100,000 to him personally—$100,000 to his campaign committee—$100,000 to Republican State Committee. [Dwyer] was going to see Robert Asher in Montgomery County that weekend to talk to him about how this should be done.”

However, Bob Asher, the then Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman, objected to this, and requested that the $300,000 be directed entirely to the Republican State Committee, since Asher "did not want Dwyer to go to jail".

Indictment & Trial

Dwyer, along with Asher, were indicted by a federal grand jury on May 13, 1986. In the hopes of reducing his twelve-year sentence resulting from his 1985 conviction, Smith testified on behalf of the federal government against Dwyer and Asher at their 1986 trial. Ultimately, Smith did not receive any reduction of his sentence for testifying against Dwyer (although his wife, Judy Smith, was granted immunity from prosecution). Before testifying against Dwyer, Smith passed a polygraph test.

It was revealed at Dwyer's trial that he sought and won approval for special legislation—Act 38 of 1984 (House Bill 1397)—that authorized him to recover the FICA overpayments, and that coded computer tape seized from CTA's office on July 6, 1984, showed that Dwyer was to receive a $300,000 pay-off for awarding CTA the contract. Moreover, Smith and Torquato's claims about Dwyer being bribed were corroborated by four independent and impartial witnesses, and Smith's testimony against Dwyer was virtually identical to written statements Smith made long before entering into a plea agreement. Additionally, FBI agents testified that Dwyer attempted to conceal his involvement with the scheme when, after learning of the FBI investigation, he erased the entry in his appointment book of the March 2, 1984, meeting with Torquato and Smith in which he was first offered a bribe.

Dwyer maintained that he awarded CTA the contract on the basis of his treasury task force recommendation, yet this conflicted with the fact that Dwyer personally managed all matters relating to the contract six days prior to awarding it to CTA. Furthermore, his task force's contribution merely consisted in the making of a single telephone call to David I. Herbert (the former State Director for Social Security, who controlled FICA recovery for Pennsylvania's public employees, and who was convicted subsequently for conspiring with CTA).

Dwyer awarded the contract to CTA—an obscure California-based company with three employees, little equipment, and little experience despite being informed in April 1984 by the major Pennsylvania-based accounting company Arthur Young and Associates, which had 250 employees and submitted a proposal on April 13, 1984, at least fourteen days prior to CTA's proposal, that they could perform the FICA recovery as fast as CTA for half the cost.

Charles Collins, Arthur Young's former management consulting director in Pittsburgh, testified at Dwyer's trial that Arthur Young and Associates, who, unlike CTA, had experience in identical tax recovery work, was prepared to negotiate the FICA recovery contract (that was half the cost of the CTA contract) and that Dwyer was clearly aware of Arthur Young's offer before committing the contract to CTA. Additionally, sixteen other competitors were willing to be considered for the FICA recovery contract and many had communicated with Treasurer Dwyer's office to request an opportunity to bid on the contract, yet Dwyer did not respond. Dwyer repeatedly stated that he awarded the contract to CTA as a result of his task force's recommendation on the basis of CTA's providing "immediate credit", yet the contract between CTA and Dwyer contained no information regarding CTA's ability to provide such credit. Moreover, Dwyer admitted that he did not mention the concept of "immediate credit" to Arthur Young and Associates when officials from the company asked why CTA was chosen instead of them. In contradiction to Dwyer's statements about awarding CTA the contract on the basis of their providing "immediate credit", Arthur Young and Associates were told that CTA got the contract since they first recognized that the overpayments could be recovered, and that they endorsed legislation that gave Dwyer the sole power to award said contract.

Dwyer denied any wrongdoing, stating that after the CTA contract was signed, Smith merely made a "generic" offer to help him with his campaign. Dwyer's lawyer spoke to the prosecutor, acting U.S. Attorney James West, asking him if he would dismiss all charges against Dwyer if Dwyer resigned as state treasurer. West refused the offer. He instead offered to let Dwyer plead guilty to a single charge of bribe receiving, which would have meant a maximum of five years' imprisonment, as long as he resigned from his office as Treasurer of Pennsylvania and cooperated completely with the government's investigation, but Dwyer refused and went to trial. At his trial, Dwyer did not testify, and his lawyer, Paul Killion, presented no defense witnesses since he thought that the government did not sufficiently prove its case. It is possible that Dwyer did not testify in his own defense since he did not want to be questioned regarding his involvement in a 1980 conspiracy involving his wife's business "Poli-Ed," and two Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) employees. One of these employees was Dwyer's close friend and campaign manager Fred Mckillop, who was subsequently dismissed by the PSEA for his involvement with the scheme, and who later featured in a 2010 documentary about Dwyer. In this conspiracy, which was investigated by the office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General, Dwyer allegedly siphoned money from his campaign into his personal funds.

On December 18, 1986, Dwyer was found guilty on 11 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, perjury and interstate transportation in aid of racketeering, and was consequently liable to a sentence of as much as 55 years imprisonment and a $300,000 fine. His sentencing was scheduled for January 23, 1987, to be performed by U.S. District Court Judge Malcolm Muir. One mail-fraud charge against Dwyer was dismissed by Judge Muir. One juror, Carolyn Edwards of Williamsport, found it emotionally difficult to convict Dwyer (and Asher) since they were men of "very high integrity ... they just made a mistake". Bob Asher, Dwyer's co-defendant, was sentenced to one year in jail. He later resumed politics and served as a Republican national committeeman for Pennsylvania.

Accounting company Levin-Horwath ultimately fulfilled the contract for $1,300,000, with slightly more than a third of the fee possibly being subject to rebate. If CTA were to have performed the recovery work, Pennsylvania would have lost $6,000,000.

Pennsylvania law stated that Dwyer could not officially be dismissed from office until his sentencing in January. Given this, Dwyer stated that until his legal appeal was resolved, he would continue as treasurer with a leave of absence without pay and would not resign before having the opportunity to appeal his conviction. In the interim, the treasury department would be managed by Deputy Treasurer Donald L. Johnson.

Dwyer continued to profess his innocence after being convicted, and on December 23 wrote a letter to President Ronald Reagan seeking a presidential pardon, and to Senator Arlen Specter seeking assistance with this effort.

The week of Dwyer's sentencing, Pennsylvania State Attorney General LeRoy Zimmerman and state prosecutors were investigating a provision of the Pennsylvania state constitution such that dismissal of a civil worker from office who has been convicted of a crime is "self-executing", thus, automatic upon that person's sentencing. A decision confirming this constitutional provision was expected on January 22, the day before Dwyer's sentencing hearing.

Public Suicide

Infamously, In a meeting in his home on January 15, 1987, Dwyer discussed the idea of a press conference with his press secretary James "Duke" Horshock and Deputy Treasurer Don Johnson. At the meeting, both Horshock and Johnson cautioned Dwyer not to use the conference to attack the governor or other individuals involved with his criminal conviction, and both suggested to Dwyer that he should have the conference at a location other than his office. Dwyer angrily rejected their suggestion, but nevertheless assured both men that he would not attack anybody involved with his conviction. He said that he would not announce his resignation at the conference, but rather thank his staff and friends. Both men left assuming Dwyer would ultimately resign at the conference, although Horshock had fears that Dwyer would violate his promise.

The next day, Dwyer visited his lawyer, Paul Killion, who told Dwyer to express repentance for his crimes. Dwyer responded by agreeing to change his "version of events", which was to be presented to Judge Muir at Dwyer's pre-sentencing conference scheduled for the afternoon of January 22. Dwyer later saw Killion again, gave him an updated "version of events", and stated that he would announce his resignation at the press conference, yet did not want Killion to attend the conference.

Dwyer wrote a letter to then-Senator, and later US president Joe Biden and Congressman Peter W. Rodino, who were at the time the chairs of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House Judiciary Committee respectively, on January 20, asking them to conduct an investigation into the CTA affair, to reform the justice system in the United States, and if this is not done, to completely remove the word "justice" from everything related to the DOJ.

Dwyer finally reached U.S. Senator Arlen Specter by telephone on January 21, two days before his sentencing. A Specter aide stated that the two of them talked for eight to ten minutes. He then wrote personally to President Ronald Reagan asking for a presidential pardon. In his letter, Dwyer once again professed his innocence and stated that the concept of immediate credit was not understood by the uneducated, unsophisticated "rural" jury at his trial. The senator responded that this request to President Reagan was "not realistic" because the judicial process, including appeals, had not yet finished.

On the same day, Dwyer asked his press secretary Horshock and deputy press secretary Gregory Penny to schedule a news conference for the next day without telling them what he was to discuss. Horshock arranged the press conference for 10:30 a.m. EST the next day, January 22. The press secretary summoned dozens of reporters asking them to attend, and told them he did not know its subject.

Dwyer wanted to ban certain reporters from the press conference who he believed wrote biased accounts about him and even suggested that a guard should be in attendance to prevent entry to those who were not on his authorized list. Horshock, who was unconvinced about Dwyer's claims that he was being conspired against, objected, stating to Dwyer that he could not "use state government facilities to manipulate the free flow of information".

Before the press conference, acting U.S. Attorney West, who had secured the conviction against Dwyer, remarked that the Treasurer's decision to resign "sounds like the appropriate thing to do under the circumstances. It seems like it would save everybody a lot of time and aggravation." Similarly, Harrisburg Patriot-News reporter Kenn Marshall described the consensus among reporters: they would be attending to see Dwyer announce his resignation from his office. "My mission was to stay there until he said those words, then call in a new top for our story."

The night before the press conference, Dwyer wrote the following note:

I enjoy being with Jo so much, the next 20 years or so would have been wonderful. Tomorrow is going to be so difficult and I hope I can go through with it.

Dwyer's press statement

The next morning, Dwyer went to his press conference as planned. Standing behind a large wood table that separated him from nine television cameras, four wire service photographers and about 20 television, radio and newspaper reporters, he began reading from a 21-page prepared text, while aides handed a 20-page version to the media. The final page was expected to be his announcement that he would resign from office.

Appearing nervous and agitated, Dwyer again professed his innocence and accused acting U.S. Attorney James West, FBI agents, U.S. District Court Judge Malcolm Muir, the media and others for abusing the justice system and ruining him. Dwyer stated that Attorney West purposely held Dwyer's trial not in Harrisburg but in Williamsport, due to it being located in Lycoming County, one of the most uneducated counties in Pennsylvania. Dwyer spoke out against the death penalty and expressed regret for voting in favor of it while he was in the Pennsylvania assembly. This speech lasted nearly 30 minutes, and approximately halfway through it, some of the gathered press began to pack and leave. Dwyer spotted this and interrupted himself to say, "Those of you who are putting your cameras away, I think you ought to stay because we're not, we're not finished yet."

Given the sensitive nature of portions of Dwyer's text, press secretary Horshock had considered interrupting him outright to stop him but concluded that he would hold his own press conference after Dwyer's. "I had to make it known that I was not aware of the content of the statement. I didn't want it to be thought that I wrote that for him."

Upon reaching the final page of his statement, which had not been distributed to the press nor press secretary Horshock in advance, Dwyer paused. "... and I'm on the last page now, and I don't have enough to pass out, but Duke [Horshock], I'll leave this here, and you can make copies for the people; there's a few extra copies here right now." Dwyer continued,

“I thank the good Lord for giving me 47 years of exciting challenges, stimulating experiences, many happy occasions and most of all the finest wife and children any man could ever desire.”

“Now my life has changed for no apparent reason. People who call and write are exasperated and feel helpless. They know I am innocent and want to help, but in this nation, the worlds greatest democracy, there is nothing they can do to prevent me from being punished for a crime they know I did not commit. Some who have called have said that I am a modern day Job.”

“Judge Muir is also noted for his medieval sentences. I face a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison and a $300,000 fine for being innocent. Judge Muir has already told the press that he felt "invigorated" when we were found guilty and that he plans to imprison me as a "deterrant" to other public officials. But it wouldn't be a deterrant [sic] because every public official who knows me knows that I am innocent. It wouldn't be legitimate punishment because I've done nothing wrong. Since I'm a victim of political persecution, my prison would simply be an American Gulag.”

“I ask those that believe in me to continue to extend friendship and prayer to my family, to work untiringly for the creation of a true justice system here in the United States, and to press on with the efforts to vindicate me, so that my family and their future families are not tainted by this injustice that has been perpetrated on me.”

“We were confident that right and truth would prevail and I would be acquitted and we would devote the rest of our lives working to create a justice system here in the United States. The guilty verdict has strengthened that resolve. But as we've discussed our plans to expose the warts of our legal system[,] people have said, 'Why bother? No one cares, you'll look foolish, 60 Minutes, 20/20, the American Civil Liberties Union, Jack Anderson, and others have been publicizing cases like yours for years and it doesn't bother anyone.'

At this time, Dwyer stopped reading from his prepared remarks, with the gathered press still waiting on his expected resignation. There was still a significant portion of the prepared text remaining, which detailed what he was actually planning to do, and it read as follows” (he did not read these comments to the crowd)

“I've repeatedly said that I'm not going to resign as State Treasurer. After many hours of thought and meditation I've made a decision that should not be an example to anyone because it is unique to my situation. Last May I told you that after the trial, I would give you the story of the decade. To those of you who are shallow, the events of this morning will be that story. But to those of you with depth and concern the real story will be what I hope and pray results from this morning—in the coming months and years[,] the development of a true justice system here in the United States. I am going to die in office in an effort to ' ... see if the shame[-ful] facts, spread out in all their shame, will not burn through our civic shamelessness and set fire to American pride.' Please tell my story on every radio and television station and in every newspaper and magazine in the U.S. Please leave immediately if you have a weak stomach or mind since I don't want to cause physical or mental distress. Joanne, Rob, DeeDee – I love you! Thank you for making my life so happy. Good bye to you all on the count of 3. Please make sure that the sacrifice of my life is not in vain.”

After deciding to break from his speech, Dwyer called to three of his staffers, giving each a sealed envelope with the insignia of the treasury department. The first envelope, given to Bob Holste, contained a letter addressed to then-Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey, who had assumed office just two days earlier. The second, given to deputy press secretary Gregory Penny, contained an organ donor card and other related materials. The last, given to Deputy Treasurer Don Johnson, contained materials intended for Dwyer's family, including three letters: one for his wife Joanne, and one for each of his children, Rob and DeeDee (Dyan), and suggested funeral arrangements.

Freelance photographer Gary Miller, one of the reporters in attendance, described the scene at this time, stating: "It was just kind of a long-winded, sad event."

(Different POV)

After he had finished speaking and handing out the notes to his staffers Dwyer produced a manila envelope with a Model 19 .357 Magnum revolver in it.

Reporters David Morris of the Associated Press, Thom Cole of UPI and Gary Warner of afternoon newspaper The Pittsburgh Press were at the rear of the room, waiting for Dwyer to say he had resigned, so they could run down the hall to telephones to tell their editors they could publish pre-written stories and add Dwyer's direct quote. When Dwyer produced the revolver, the three ran into the hallway and shouted to a state police kiosk in the center of the long hallway that the treasurer had a gun.

Inside the room, people gasped, and Dwyer backed up against the wall, holding the weapon close to his body. Dwyer calmly said, "Please, please, please leave the room if this will... if this will affect you."

Among those who stayed, some pleaded with Dwyer to surrender the gun while others tried to approach him and seize the weapon. Dwyer warned against either action, exclaiming his last words, "Don't, don't, don't, this will hurt someone."

Dwyer quickly put the muzzle of the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger, firing a shot through the roof of his mouth and into his brain. He collapsed on the floor, dead. Blood ran out profusely through the back of his head and through his nose.

Nine news cameras recorded the events. One of the cameras remained focused on Dwyer and captured close-up footage of the aftermath of the shooting; as his body slumped, blood streamed from the exit wound in the back of his head as well as from his nostrils and mouth. He died instantly from the gunshot shortly before 11:00 a.m. EST but was not pronounced dead until 11:31 a.m. An aide later stated that Dwyer's corneas were made available for transplant per his organ donation wishes, but that no other organs were usable by the time his body reached a hospital.[m Interment occurred at Blooming Valley Cemetery in Saegertown on January 26.

While the live footage was only shown on one station, many television stations throughout Pennsylvania broadcast taped footage of Dwyer's suicide to a midday audience. Philadelphia station WPVI (Channel 6) showed Dwyer pulling the trigger and falling backwards, but did not show the bullet path. During the next several hours, news editors had to decide how much of the graphic footage they wanted to broadcast. Many chose not to broadcast the final moments of the suicide and WPVI also chose not to show the gunshot a second time.

Many stations, including WCAU and Pennsylvania's Group W stations KYW and KDKA-TV, stopped the action just before the gunshot. However, the latter two allowed the audio of the shooting to continue with the stopped image. Group W's news cameraman William L. Martin and reporter David Sollenberger had a camera set up at the conference. They chose to broadcast the audio with a freeze-frame of the gun in Dwyer's mouth. Only a handful broadcast the unedited press conference. WPVI in Philadelphia rebroadcast the suicide footage in full on their 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Action News broadcast without warning the viewers. That station's broadcast is a source for copies available on the Internet. WPXI in Pittsburgh is reported by the Associated Press to have broadcast the footage uncensored on an early newscast. In explaining the decision to broadcast, WPXI operations manager By Williams said, "It's an important event [about] an important man". Williams avoided broadcasting the footage in the evening newscasts, explaining, "Everyone knows by then that [Dwyer] did it. There are children out of school." However, in central Pennsylvania, many children were home from school during the day of Dwyer's suicide due to a snowstorm.

The moment of Dwyer's suicide did not appear on any national newscast. NBC Nightly News and CNN's coverage only showed Dwyer holding the gun and stopped before he placed it in his mouth, and CBS Evening News and ABC World News Tonight did not include any footage from the press conference in their reports.

Some older students joked about the event. A study of the incidence of the jokes showed that they were told only in areas where stations showed uncensored footage of the press conference. At least one reporter present at Dwyer's suicide suffered from being a witness: radio reporter Tony Romeo, who was standing a few feet from Dwyer, developed depression after the suicide and took a break from journalism.

Dwyer's mistrust of outgoing Republican Governor Dick Thornburgh was expressed in detail in his press conference statement.[62] The timing of Dwyer's press conference and suicide meant that Thornburgh was not empowered to appoint a Treasurer to replace him. Instead, this became the responsibility of Thornburgh's successor, Democrat Bob Casey, who had assumed office on January 20.

The letter Dwyer sent Casey stated, "By the time you receive this letter ... the office of State Treasurer of Pennsylvania will be vacant. I stress to you that I did not resign but was State Treasurer of Pennsylvania to the end." It also stated that Casey "will be the great Governor that Pennsylvania needs at this time in our history". He suggested his wife Joanne as his successor, describing her as "very talented, personable, organized and hard-working."

Governor Casey did not accept Dwyer's suggestion. Regardless of the events of January 22, the governor and legislature of Pennsylvania already expected Dwyer to either resign or be dismissed from office. As such, a deal had already been brokered wherein the next treasurer, a Democrat, would serve the remnant of Dwyer's term and resign at its end. This was G. Davis Greene Jr., who was appointed as the 31st Treasurer of Pennsylvania on January 23, 1987, the day after Dwyer's suicide.

In 2010, former U.S. attorney James West, who prosecuted Dwyer, affirmed Dwyer's guilt, stating that "the evidence against Dwyer was overwhelming and indisputable".

In his final press statement, Dwyer alleged that Governor Thornburgh along with prosecutor James West, engaged in a political vendetta against him, and that FBI agents had acted improperly in their investigation. After Dwyer's public suicide, the National Association of State Treasurers requested that Dwyer's allegations be reviewed by the Department of Justice. After a thorough investigation, the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility exonerated attorney James West and everyone else involved in Dwyer's investigation and prosecution of any wrongdoing. The FBI also investigated Dwyer's claims regarding impropriety on behalf of FBI personnel. They ultimately found Dwyer's claims to be "lacking in substance and specificity" and warranting no further action. R.B. Swift, former Capitol reporter, noted that Dwyer's allegations were extensively investigated by journalists from both The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Associated Press, but no evidence was found to substantiate them.

Dwyer claimed that Governor Thornburgh sought revenge against him, since Dwyer had angered Thornburgh when he refused publicly to approve expense vouchers for Thornburgh's wife for a European visit, and, additionally, when he criticized Thornburgh's use of state police to chauffeur his son to school. In response, Thornburgh pointed out that prior to their European visit, the Thornburgh family had issued a press release specifically stating that Ginny Thornburgh would pay her own expenses. Upon their return to Pennsylvania, Mrs. Thornburgh "repeatedly requested" the Thornburgh staff to "advise her of the amount" to be reimbursed; however, Dwyer leaked this matter to The Philadelphia Inquirer in an attempt to "enhance his own image by embarrassing" Thornburgh and his family. Regarding the use of the state police, Thornburgh stated that "the security detail provided its services to all members of our household as the officers deemed necessary for our protection. We neither asked for nor questioned these services, which were no different than those provided to our predecessors." Thornburgh spokesman David Runkel dismissed Dwyer's allegations as being "paranoic", as did John Taylor, the former spokesman for Governor Bob Casey. Pennsylvanian journalist and author Brad Bumsted suggested that Dwyer's allegations against Thornburgh may have been an attempt to divert attention from his own criminal activity with CTA. Bumsted also stated that, in Dwyer's final press statement, Dwyer "offered no real evidence" that there was any conspiracy against him.

Dwyer's deputy press secretary Gregory Penny, who was handed an envelope by Dwyer at Dwyer's final press conference, stated that he was convinced that Dwyer, whom he had once defended, had been guilty all along:

Some of the individuals Budd associated with and surrounded himself; the reluctance to provide information to his press office when we tried to respond to reporters' questions during that time; the pleading of the 5th Amendment during Budd's trial by his top aide Budd's decision not to take the stand in his own defense during the trial; and Budd's decision to take his life rather than go to prison and continue fighting to prove his innocence — these are the things I thought about and that brought me to conclude that Budd was not innocent.

Since Dwyer died in office, his widow Joanne was able to collect full survivor benefits totaling more than $1.28 million (equivalent to about $3.3M in 2022), which at the time was the largest death benefit payment ever made by the Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement System. If Dwyer had been sentenced, state law would have prohibited the payment of his state-provided pension benefits. A spokesman for Dwyer suggested that he may have killed himself to preserve the pension benefits for his family, whose finances had been ruined by legal defense costs. Other statements made by some friends and family also suggest that this was Dwyer's motivation.

At a panel discussion for the documentary Honest Man: The Life of R. Budd Dwyer, Dwyer's sister Mary Kun stated that Dwyer had made the decision to kill himself prior to knowing he would lose his pension and thus his motivation for his suicide was not to provide financial assurance for his family, but rather to "sacrifice himself to help the system."

California Woman Livestreamed Dying Teen Sister on Instagram After Car Crash

Obdulia Sánchez, 18, has been arrested in California on suspicion of causing a fatal car crash that was recorded live on Instagram.

A California woman is in custody after allegedly livestreaming a fatal car crash on Instagram that killed her 14-year-old sister and injured another teen.

Obdulia Sánchez, 18, was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after Friday's crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Sánchez was behind the wheel of a 2003 Buick when the vehicle veered onto the right shoulder of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Police said it is unclear how fast Sánchez was driving.

She over-corrected, causing the vehicle to swerve across lanes, crash through a wire fence and overturn into a field, the authorities said.

The two 14-year-olds were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car during the crash, officials said.

In a statement, the California Highway Patrol said it is aware of the possibility of "video evidence located on social media" and is investigating.

Part of the livestream shows Sánchez outside the car with what appears to be her sister Jacqueline's body. The other teen can be seen attempting to wave down help.

“I f-----g killed my sister, OK? I know I'm going to jail for life,” Sánchez says in the video. “This is the last thing I wanted to happen, OK? I don't f-----g care though, I'm going to hold it down. Rest in peace, sweetie. If you don't survive, I am so f-----g sorry.”

Sergio Ramos Estrada, a cousin, told NBC News the teens were preparing for a Quinceañera — a special 15th-birthday celebration — when the accident happened.

“We were going to go to her house the next day to celebrate her Quinceañera and unfortunately that happened,” Ramos Estrada said. The CHP is examining the video as part of the investigation.

Sánchez is currently being held on a $300,000 bond at the John Latoracca Correctional Facility in Merced.

Obdulia Sánchez is in police custody after an Instagram Live story revealed a deadly crash that killed her 14 year-old sister.

The Apollo 1 fire

Jan. 27, 1967, tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204 (AS-204). The mission was to be the first crewed flight of Apollo, and was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967. Astronauts Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module, or CM.

The exhaustive investigation of the fire and extensive reworking of the Apollo command modules postponed crewed launches until NASA officials cleared them for flight. Saturn IB schedules were suspended for nearly a year, and the launch vehicle that finally bore the designation AS-204 carried a lunar module, or LM, as the payload, instead of a CM. The missions of AS-201 and AS-202 with Apollo spacecraft aboard had been unofficially known as Apollo 1 and Apollo 2 missions. AS-203 carried only the aerodynamic nose cone.

In the spring of 1967, NASA's Associate Administrator for Manned Space Flight, Dr. George E. Mueller, announced that the mission originally scheduled for Grissom, White and Chaffee would be known as Apollo 1, and said that the first Saturn V launch, scheduled for November 1967, would be known as Apollo 4. The eventual launch of AS-204 became known as the Apollo 5 mission. No missions or flights were ever designated Apollo 2 or 3.

The second launch of a Saturn V took place on schedule in the early morning of April 4, 1968. Known as AS-502, or Apollo 6, the flight was a success, though two first-stage engines shut down prematurely, and the third-stage engine failed to reignite after reaching orbit

Preserved autopsy

In 2013, researchers examined a gruesome relic. The partial mummy consisted of shoulders, a neck, and a head. The man's death expression was disturbing, almost like a permanent scream.Scientists thought it was preserved during the 1400s or 1500s, but analysis placed it between AD 1200 and AD 1280. This made it Europe's oldest preserved human autopsy. It also placed the body right in the middle of what many considered Europe's most backward time for science. However, the mummy was prepared by experienced hands and surprisingly advanced techniques. The ancient doctor mixed lime, beeswax, and red cinnabar mercury. The potion was injected into the veins to preserve the body and add a touch of color to the circulatory system. The back of the skull and brain were also skillfully removed This went against the prevailing view that human dissection in the Middle Ages was a “cut up and throw away” affair. This man was possibly even preserved for future use in medical education

Yellow river

There's a time-honored insult that often arises during heated arguments between people in towns that line the Yellow River: "If you can't bear the situation, jump into the river and end your life," as the barbed phrase goes.

While the words are often uttered as an angry curse, many people have literally heeded the advice. At least 10,000 bodies have been recovered along an 80-kilometer stretch of the Yellow River's Lanzhou section in Northwest China's Gansu Province since the 1960s. Around 300 bodies are pulled from the river annually, according to local authorities and corpse collectors who work on the river.

Some of the bodies are returned to relatives, while others are retrieved and cremated by the local civil affairs department. However, many are left flowing along the Yellow River.

Police, body collectors and officials from the civil affairs and environmental departments are often at loggerheads with how to deal with the bodies and the pollution and contamination problems they pose to the river's ecosystem.

Soyuz 11

The Soviet Union established the first experimental space station in Earth orbit in June 1971, when Soyuz 11 cosmonauts Georgi T. Dobrovolski, Vladislav N. Volkov, and Viktor I. Patsayev boarded Salyut and spent more than three weeks aboard the laboratory conducting a variety of experiments. Tragedy struck near the end of their record-setting mission when, shortly before reentry into the Earth's atmosphere, the cosmonauts died as a result of the sudden depressurization of their spacecraft. They were not wearing pressure suits. The Soviet government honored the cosmonauts with a state funeral, with NASA astronaut Thomas P. Stafford representing the President of the United States. As a result of the accident, the Soviets temporarily halted human spaceflights while engineers redesigned the Soyuz spacecraft. Since then, all cosmonauts have worn spacesuits during Soyuz launches and landings.

Creatonotos gangis

Perhaps most notably, the truly astonishing Creatonotos gangis remains one of the most visually distinctive Lepidoptera known to man. Unfortunately for those trying to pronounce it, the remarkable insect also has no generally accepted common name.

The first official scientific recognition of the creature as a separate and distinct species took place in the late 18th century. That formal acknowledgement, like many others, occurred as a direct result of the renowned Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus.

While it may be unknown to many, the incredible moth actually inhabits a moderately extensive range. Due to this unfortunate fact, along with an apparently sizeable and relatively stable population base, the IUCN currently has no listing for the insect.

Although the adults remain completely harmless, the same situation does not hold true for the caterpillar form, however. In point of fact, this life stage of the surprising invertebrate very frequently causes severe damage to local pomegranate crops.

Sadly, however, its fortunate Red List of Threatened Species status could potentially change in the very near future. This lamentable fact occurs for the same reason it does for numerous other species.

Sunset on Mars

Martian atmosphere is dominated by large-sized dust particles. These particles cause something called ‘Mie Scattering,' which filters out the red light from the sun's rays and only lets the blue reach our eyes.

But then why do sunsets on earth look red? Because the size of particles is very small in Earth's atmosphere, as compared to the wavelength of light. The tiny particles present in Earth's atmosphere scatter the blue wavelengths through a process called ‘Rayleigh Scattering', so by the time the light reaches our eyes, only the red remains.

Simple put, think of the atmosphere as a filter for sunlight. Earth's atmosphere is good at filtering out blue light and letting in red light, whereas the Martian atmosphere is better at filtering out red light and letting in the blue.

Chris Farley

Christopher Crosby Farley (February 15, 1964 – December 18, 1997) was an American comedian and actor. He was known for his loud, energetic comedic style, and was a member of Chicago's Second City Theatre and later a cast member of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live for five seasons from 1990 to 1995. He went on to pursue a film career.

On December 18, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. EST, Farley was found dead by his younger brother John in his apartment in the John Hancock Center in Chicago. He was 33 years old. An autopsy revealed that Farley had died of an overdose of a combination of cocaine and morphine, commonly known as a "speedball". Advanced atherosclerosis was cited as a "significant contributing factor.

Lunar lava tube

A study published in Geophysical Research Letters confirms the existence of a large open lava tube in the Marius Hills region of the moon, which could be used to protect astronauts from hazardous conditions on the surface.

No one has ever been on the moon longer than three days, largely because space suits alone can't shield astronauts from its elements: extreme temperature variation, radiation, and meteorite impacts. Unlike Earth, the moon has no atmosphere or magnetic field to protects its inhabitants.

The safest place to seek shelter is the inside of an intact lava tube, according to the study.

Lava tubes are naturally occurring channels formed when a lava flow develops a hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still-flowing lava stream. Once the lava stops flowing, the tunnel sometimes drains, forming a hollow void.

“It's important to know where and how big lunar lava tubes are if we're ever going to construct a lunar base,” said Junichi Haruyama, a senior researcher at JAXA, Japan's space agency. “But knowing these things is also important for basic science. We might get new types of rock samples, heat flow data and lunar quake observation data.”

JAXA analyzed radar data from the SELENE spacecraft to detect underlying lava tubes. Near the Marius Hills Skylight, an entrance to the tube, they found a distinctive echo pattern: a decrease in echo power followed by a large second echo peak, which they believe is evidence of a tube. The two echoes correspond to radar reflections from the moon's surface and the floor and ceiling of the open tube. The team found similar echo patterns at several locations around the hole, indicating there may be more than one.

Marilyn Monroe

On the evening of August 4, 1962, American actress Marilyn Monroe died at age 36 of a barbiturate overdose inside her home at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California. Her body was discovered before dawn the following morning, on August 5. Monroe had been one of the most popular Hollywood stars during the 1950s and early 1960s, and was a top-billed actress for the preceding decade. Her films had grossed $200 million by the time of her death.

Slavemaster Victim

John Edward Robinson AKA "The Slavemaster is a huge piece of shit, and an American serial killer who was convicted in 2003 of the murders of three women during a fifteen-year period. He subsequently admitted responsibility for five additional murders during that time. Because he made contact with most of his post-1993 victims via on-line chat rooms, he is sometimes referred to as "the Internet's first serial killer".

Robinson convinced a lonely licensed practical nurse by day and submissive slave by night named Suzette Trouten (the victim in the video) to move from Michigan to Kansas so they could travel the world together. Trouten's mother received several typed letters, purportedly mailed while the couple was abroad, although the envelopes were stamped with Kansas City postmarks, and the letters were, her mother said, uncharacteristically mistake-free. Later, Robinson told Trouten's mother she had run off with an acquaintance after stealing money from him, but in reality he murdered her and stuff her body into a drum.

Turtle Mouth

The leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world. They are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough rubbery skin and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. Leatherbacks are highly migratory, some swimming over 10,000 miles a year between nesting and foraging grounds. They are also accomplished divers with the deepest recorded dive reaching nearly 4,000 feet, that's deeper than most marine mammals.

Anorexia is an eating disorder that causes people to weigh less than is considered healthy for their age and height, usually by excessive weight loss.

People with this disorder may have an intense fear of weight gain, even when they are underweight. They may diet or exercise too much or use other ways to lose weight.

The exact causes of anorexia are not known. Many factors may be involved. Genes and hormones may play a role. Social attitudes that promote very thin body types may also be involved.

Risk factors for anorexia include:

Being more worried about, or paying more attention to, weight and body shape

Having an anxiety disorder as a child

Having a negative self-image

Having eating problems during infancy or early childhood

Having certain social or cultural ideas about health and beauty

Trying to be perfect or overly focused on rules

Anorexia often begins during the pre-teen or teen years or young adulthood. It is more common in females, but may also be seen in males.

Lake Nyos disaster

On August 21, 1986, a cloud of magmatic carbon dioxide gas arose from the bed of Lake Nyos, a freshwater lake located in a volcanic caldera in the populous Northwest Region of the East African nation of Cameroon. The rare event, called a limnic eruption, was announced by a small explosion that residents of a market town near the lake described as being like distant thunder, but it was otherwise unannounced by anything else apart from a foul odour.

The 1.6 million ton cloud of magmatic gas was deadly, and a count of the fatalities indicated that 1,746 people, most from villages by the lake, had been asphyxiated by it, along with some 3,000 cattle and innumerable birds, insects, and other animals. The bodies of the dead showed no signs of trauma or struggle; these people had simply died where they were. A research team from France and the United States arrived at the sceneand noted that the lake was an unusual dark-brown colour, and that a surrounding raffia forest and several other expanses of vegetation had been flattened by both the explosion and the tsunami-like water wave that ensued. That the lake was responsible for the deaths was immediately clear to the scientists, but the mechanism involved was not.

CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST The Brutal Killing of Joaquín, an 11 year old Boy from Ecuador [CW]

The Brutal Killing of Joaquín, an 11-Year-Old Boy

September 7, 2023 - Thursday, 11:50 AM

Guayaquil, Ecuador

A group of armed men arrived in two cars and four motorbikes at a repair shop looking to assassinate a rival. They immediately and indiscriminately - using rifles and pistols - opened fire at a group of people standing by the shop. Some managed to take cover inside the houses and shops nearby but many were caught in the crossfire.

Two men and one child died instantly at the scene. The fourth victim died at a hospital. Six were injured, including two young girls.

The target was a man (with a criminal record) who lived 3 houses from the shop, and actually survived the shooting by hiding in the trunk of a car. That's right, the sicarios couldn't even get the address right. The man had been living in that neighborhood for at least 6 years and while people heard he had some criminal history, they didn't consider him a threat.

After the incident, the local police chased after the criminals. Some residents of the 'Ciudad Perdida' and 'Mosquito' sectors even assisted the criminals by placing logs with nails on the streets to prevent police work. One of them fell from his motorbike during the chase and was arrested, but the rest eventually managed to escape on a boat that was waiting for them in Estero Salado (a estuary).

Full video of the shooting:

Who was Joaquín?

Joaquín was an 11-year-old boy, who according to his grandma was "a restless but loving boy". He loved to stay just outside the house next to the shop socializing. He was on the fifth year of Basic Education (Ecuadoran education system).

Joaquín's was the youngest and the only boy of a family of 5 children and a single mom. Three of his older sisters have mental disabilities, and his mother Maria, was hoping Joaquin was going to eventually help support the family and his sisters.

The Killing of Joaquín

That morning after returning from school, Joaquin changed out of school uniform and went outside to buy a couple of soda drinks, one for his disabled sister and one for himself. His grandma asked him to stay inside and take a nap but Joaquin refused and went outside to finish his soda.

And just as we has sitting down on the sidewalk, the criminals arrived shooting indiscriminately, Joaquin was immediately struck as he was trying to run away and died instantly. In total, he was shot 37 times 32 from 9mm handguns and 5 from .223 rifles.

Joaquín was waked at the home of his relatives and was buried on September 9, 2023, in a cemetery north of the town.

it happened here

What his family said after the tragedy

His mother Maria:

Everything has been difficult for me, first it was my eldest daughter, then the next one. The third, thank God, has no problems, but the fourth also suffers from disabilities. With Joaquín's death they took away my hope of giving his sisters a better future.

His grandma Liliana:

He didn't listen to me, he went to the store to buy two 25 cent sodas, one for himself and one for his older sister. Then he sat on the sidewalk and it was just at that moment that this massacre took place that took our child away from us.

His uncle Alex:

My nephew's body was destroyed, his internal organs, his little head, it was heartbreaking, they acted mercilessly, viciously, they didn't care that he was a child, for God's sake. Why so much evil. He was beginning to live.

RIP Little Joaquín

CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST Siege of Waco - an Effortpost by @-V_I_B_E

Welcome! in this effortpost, I will be going over the Siege of Waco, it's aftermath, and how it happened. Strap in and let's go!

The Branch Davidians

were a religious group that was a schism (Division of Faith) from The Shepherd's Rod (an offshoot of the Adventist Church). This group was established in 1955, and in 1981, David Koresh (Formerly known as Vernon Howell) joined the religious group.

^Flag of the Branch Davidians

They were based in Waco, Texas, and lived at Mount Carmel

The Branch Davidians believed in The Apocalypse, and were on edge, as they thought Jesus would come back in the prophesied Second Coming.

When the leader of the church died in 1978, Koresh would begin to exclaim his "gift in prophecy". He also had a child with the late leader's wife, and allegedly heard God say that he was fathering "The Chosen One".

On May 15th, Koresh filed for a name change, and was granted on August 20th, 1990.

At this point, Koresh had been preaching to the Branch that he must "Build the People of David". By this, he meant taking the wives of other men, and those men would practice celibacy. He allegedly fathered 12 children. Some of those wives were also underage, which put Koresh in hot water.

With all these children, there were reports that Koresh would physically or sexually abuse them. These accounts mainly came from defectors or ex-members of Branch.

The ATF and FBI Get Involved

In May of 1992, Chief Deputy Daniel Weyenburg received a tip from a UPS driver that an open box he delivered to the Mount Carmel church was filled with grenades. This added fuel to the fire of the suspicions the FBI had about Koresh and his followers illegally obtaining and stockpiling weaponry.

Daniel contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and told them about the discovery.

A formal investigation opened June 9th of that year. More concerning reports reached the ATF when they stated that automatic gunfire could be heard coming from the church. Spies were sent, and the ATF rented a house near the church to watch the Branch. Unknown to them, Koresh knew who the spy was, but chose not to expose them until the day of the siege.

Special Agent David Aguilera filed a affidavit in order to obtain a search and arrest warrant. The warrant was approved, and the warrant demanded the apprehension of Koresh on February 28th, 1993. Other specific followers were needed to be arrested too. The ATF also claimed that Koresh may have been operating a meth lab, and that illegal weaponry wasn't his only offense.

The Siege

ATF Agents mobilized on the 28th of February, 1993. Unfortunately, a KWTX-TV new reporter accidentally revealed the surprise of the raid to a postal worker, who relayed the information to the Branch Davidians. The postal worker also happened to be Koresh's brother in law. The spies mentioned earlier made an excuse and left the building. The ATF would arrive at 9:45 a.m in SWAT vehicles. The personnel also wore SWAT styled gear.

ATF agents heard shots coming from inside the compound, and they decided to open fire. Koresh was shot in the hand and the arm during the firefight. Three helicopters provided aerial surveillance and a distraction, and some helicopters were hit by gunfire.

^Helicopters would fly very low and close to the building

Four agents ran up to the side of the building and brought two ladders. The team climbed up and was outside the window where they believed was either Koresh's room, or the room where the illegal weapons were being stockpiled. When one agent tried to peek into the room, he was shot and killed. Another agent came and took his place. One agent smashed the window and threw in a flash grenade, and entered the building.

^ The team of ATF agents climbing the ladders

As an agent ran down the hallway, he got in a firefight with Branch members, and the agent was killed by return fire and a shotgun headshot. Three agents pressed on, and made their way to the Armory. There, they got into another gun fight, and two became wounded. They found a cache full of weapons, and escaped while escaping gunfire.

ATF agents took cover behind Branch Davidian cars and vehicles, while one member of the Branch got onto the water tower and fired on the enemy below. About 45 minutes into the raid, the firefight began to cease. The ATF were running out of ammo. Still, the firefight lasted for 2 hours.

^ATF agents carry a dead agent off scene

A ceasefire commenced only after the ATF were out of ammo.

FBI enters the scene

The FBI took charge after noticing how many casualties the ATF suffered. Jeff Jamar became the new Site Commander, and would be in charge of the remainder of the siege. For 51 days, there was a standoff as the FBI tried to negotiate terms with the Branch Davidians.

In the first few days, contact was established between Koresh and the FBI. Koresh told them that "God told him to stay inside and not come out". But the FBI demanded that the children in the compound be released without the parents. A total of 19 children, aging from 5 to 12, were released and given passage to the FBI. As the children were checked and given medical attention, it was discovered they had indeed been physically and sexually abused long before the raid, confirming the suspicions of the FBI and the ATF.

Because of this confirmation, the FBI decided to use tear gas as an extreme measure to force the rest of the Branch out of the compound. The FBI obtained 9 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, carrying M651 tear gas grenades, and five M728 Combat Engineer Vehicles. For the time, these vehicles were used to destroy the outside perimeter of the compound and the cars and vehicles of the Branch members.

^Two tanks sitting, awaiting orders

At this point, two factions of the FBI began to form: Those who believed in peaceful negotiation, or those who believed in violent force. Though it would seem violent force was the only option, as no sign of surrender from the Branch Davidians was shown.

The FBI then cut off all water and power to the compound, and left the Branch members to survive off rainwater and rations.

On April 14th, Koresh would write to his lawyer, and this would be his last communication with the outside world. Here is an excerpt:

"I want the people of this generation to be saved. I am working night and day to complete my final work of the writing out of these Seals. I thank my Father. He has finally granted me the chance to do this. It will bring New Light and hope to many and they will not have to deal with me the person. I will demand the first manuscript of the Seals be given to you. Many scholars and religious leaders will wish to have copies for examination. I will keep a copy with me. As soon as I can see that people like Jim Tabor and Phil Arnold have a copy I will come out and then you can do your thing with this beast."

The Final Raid

On April 19th, 1993, the FBI mobilized their Combat Engineer Vehicles to aim at the walls of the compound, punching holes in the walls. Then, the Bradley Fighting Vehicles would run up the the holes and pump tear gas into the building.

^M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle pumping gas into the compound

No armed assault was made. This effort was purely to smoke the Branch members out, or render them unable to fight or resist.

Early the next morning, they continued to fire, but instead of the tear gas canisters (which they ran out of) they used M651E1 Pyrotechnic tear gas rounds to gas the building. At this time, no members of the Branch ran out, which meant they either had gas masks, or were hiding in a concrete room.

At noon, three fires started almost simultaneously. The FBI says that they thought the Branch started it, in almost a mass suicide attempt, and Branch members say that the FBI started it with their pyrotechnic rounds.

Only 9 Branch Members ran out of the building. The remainder, including Koresh, his wives, his kids, and his loyal followers, stayed in the building.

A total of 76 bodies were found in the rubble, meaning that these bodies were the remains of the Branch Davidians. It was discovered through autopsies that when the fires started, members of the Branch were shooting each other, in an attempt of *Mercy Killing. Other members were burned or succumbed to the smoke. Even animals were found among the ruins, like dogs.

*A mercy killing is where someone prefers the easy way out instead of facing the certain death in front of them

Here are the photos, and the caption displays the suspected identity of the body, as well as the cause of death:

Baby Born With Intenstines And Heart Outside Body

This is an incredible case of ectopia cordis and omphalocele in a single case! The video shows the heart breathing outside the chest cavity, a condition called Ectopia cordis. This results from a failure of proper maturation of midline mesoderm and ventral body wall formation during embryonic development. The ectopic heart might be found in different anatomical locations such as neck, chest, or abdomen. In most cases, such as the one shown, the heart protrudes outside the chest through a split sternum. Omphalocele is a rare abdominal wall defect in which the intestines protrude through a hole is in the middle of the abdomen, right where the belly button would be. The intestines are covered only by a thin layer of tissue and can be easily seen. It is a type of hernia. The muscles in the abdominal wall (umbilical ring) do not close properly. As a result, the intestine remains outside the abdominal wall. In addition, these babies are often diagnosed with ascites, pleural effusions, a diahragmatic hernia and ventricular septal defect. The poor prognosis in such cases is related to the other associated malformations, complex cardiac abnormalites or difficulty returning the heart back into a small thoracic cavity.

EFFORTPOST Faryion Edward Wardrip ( Wichita Falls Serial Killer )

Faryion Edward Wardrip (born March 6, 1959)

is an American rapist and serial killer who assaulted and murdered a total of five women. Four of the women were killed in Wichita Falls, Texas, and the surrounding counties. One woman was murdered in Fort Worth, approximately a two-hour drive southeast of Wichita Falls. Wardrip's killing spree began at the end of 1984 and lasted until the middle of 1986. All of his female victims were white, were between the ages of 20 and 25, weighed less than 120 pounds (54 kg), and were under 5+1⁄2 feet (170 cm) tall.

With the murders occurring across multiple jurisdictions, officials from three law enforcement agencies - the Wichita Falls Police Department, the Wichita County Sheriff's Department and the Archer County Sheriff's Department - initially led isolated murder investigations. These investigations were for three of the murders that occurred within a 5-mile (8.0 km) radius of each other. This separation led to multiple news agencies reporting that the isolated investigations delayed Wardrip's capture.

Within 72 hours of the May 6, 1986 murder of Tina Kimbrew, Wardrip called authorities and confessed to her murder. He was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison. After serving less than one-third of his sentence, Wardrip was released on parole in December 1997. He was required to wear an ankle monitor allowing authorities to constantly track his location; he was restricted to movements for work, home and church.

In 1999, the Wichita County District Attorney's Office reopened the murder cases of the victims that occurred in their jurisdiction. DNA evidence found at the scene of two murders were linked to the same killer. Because Wardrip's murder of Kimbrew occurred in 1986, the lead detective became suspicious that he may have been behind the unsolved murder cases. As Wardrip was out on parole and there was no national database of DNA profiles for violent offenders at that time, authorities immediately launched surveillance of Wardrip and managed to secure a sample of his DNA, which was linked to two victims. He later confessed to the murders of the third and fourth victims. In 1999, at 40 years old, Wardrip was sentenced to death by lethal injection for the first murder, and three life terms for the other three killings

Victims :

Terry Sims

Terry Lee Sims was born to Kit Russell Sims on May 14, 1964, in Wichita Falls, Texas. The 20-year-old attended the Midwestern State University while working as a part-time EKG specialist at the nearby Bethania Hospital in December 1984. After finishing their respective shifts and exchanging Christmas gifts at a friend's house, Terry and her co-worker, Leza Boone, planned on spending the night at the latter's apartment on December 20. However, Leza had urgent work at the hospital and dropped Terry at her residence around 12:30 AM on December 21. When Leza returned from her shift at 7:30 AM, she was surprised when Terry failed to open the door even when she repeatedly knocked. She entered the apartment with her landlord and found the victim lying in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor, with her arms tied with an electrical cord. A later autopsy revealed she had been sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. The detectives preserved a fingerprint found on Terry's shoe and a semen sample, which would help them solve the heinous crime more than a decade later.

Toni Gibbs

Toni Jean Gibbs was born to Walden Lewis Gibbs and Donnie Louise Spinelli Gibbs in Clayton, New Mexico, on February 14, 1961. The 23-year-old worked as a Nurse at the Wichita General Hospital in Texas in January 1985. Toni was reported missing by her co-workers on January 19, 1985, and the police located her abandoned car near the hospital two days later. Albeit, some utility workers found her naked body on February 15 in a field at the southwest corner of West Jentsch Road and Highway 281 in Archer County.

Toni was also sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. Her autopsy report stated she had been stabbed eight times — three times each on her chest and back and once each on her left forearm and thumb. The police initially suspected a Bartender Assistant named Danny Laughlin regarding the murder when he allegedly made several incriminating statements and failed a polygraph test. Even though his DNA sample did not match the ones retrieved from the crime scene, he was tried and acquitted when the jury was deadlocked.

Debra Taylor

Debra Sue “Debbie” Huie Taylor was born on April 5, 1959, to Betty Sue Oller Clark and Terry Michael Woolsey in Tarrant County, Texas. The 25-year-old mother of two was drinking with her husband, Ken, at a bar on East Lancaster Street in the early hours of March 24, 1985. However, the latter was too tired and left early, while Debbie remained at the bar and met with Faryion. According to police reports, he offered to drive her home and attempted to make sexual advances but was turned down.

Angered by the rejection, Faryion killed Debbie. Two construction workers discovered her body on March 29. According to the autopsy, she sustained blunt-force injuries to her head and face, and her death was caused by manual strangulation. Nevertheless, the medical examiner could not determine whether or not she had been sexually assaulted. The police initially suspected Ken as the primary suspect in the homicide until Faryion confessed to the murder during questioning after his 1999 arrest.

Ellen Blau

Ellen Blau was born to Murray Leonard Blau and Rima Beller Blau in New Haven County, Connecticut, on March 18, 1964. The 21-year-old was a part-time student at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and worked as a Waitress in a local restaurant in September 1985. Ellen was abducted on September 20 while walking to her car at the end of the shift. Her body was found in a field in Wichita County on October 10, 1985, by a county road crew employee.

According to police records, Ellen's body was so decomposed that the medical examiner could only conclude that the cause of death was undetermined homicidal violence. She was positively identified with the help of her dental records. While her pulled-down underwear indicated she might have been sexually assaulted, the remains were decomposed beyond any analysis. The forensics team could not obtain any semen samples from the crime scene. Later, Wardrip confessed that he had strangled Ellen and broken her neck before driving off her car to Wichita Falls and abandoning it there.

Tina Kimbrew

Tina Elizabeth Kimbrew was born in Houston, Texas, on October 27, 1964. The 21-year-old worked as a Bartender-Waitress at a local hotel in Wichita Falls in May 1986. According to his confession, Faryion suffocated Tina with a pillow inside her apartment because she reminded him of his former spouse. Her body was discovered on the floor of her ransacked apartment in Wichita Falls on May 6, 1986.

Tina had suffered numerous bruises on her face, neck, and legs. Official court records state her nightgown was pulled above her waist, and her underwear was on the floor near her body. Albeit, the medical examiner found no evidence of recent sexual activity. According to her autopsy report, Tina had been smothered to death.

CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST The heinous murder of Christine Silawan

Christine Silawan, a 16-year-old high school student, was found dead in a vacant lot in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on March 11, 2019. Half of her face was skinned to the skull, and her body had multiple stab wounds. She was also naked from the waist down and was thought to be raped.

Her killer, 43-year-old suspect Renato "Renren" Llenes, was first apprehended by the police but later on, voluntarily confessed to the gruesome crime claiming that his conscience haunted him. A year later, before receiving his sentence, he was found dead after allegedly hanging himself to death. The case has since been closed.

-Suspect Renato "Renren" Llenes voluntarily confessed his crime after being caught by the Philippine National Police.

According to the killer, he posed as a teenage boy on Facebook to lure Christine. Things went heated for him when he got jealous. So on March 10, 2019, Lllenes asked the victim to meet him for the first time outside the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish church, where Christine helped collect offerings. The killer pretended to be the driver of her supposed Facebook chatmate to get the victim to go with him. Later on, he brought Christine to a vacant lot and killed her by stabbing her multiple times with scissors.

Afterward, he skinned the teenage girl's face with the knowledge he gained through YouTube tutorials; he did so to avoid anyone identifying the victim. The suspect also claimed that he was under the influence of illegal drugs and attempted to rape Christine. After peeling off her face, Llenes took the victim's bag, carried the skin, and walked away from the crime scene.

After Llenes' confession, the authorities have retrieved pieces of evidence linking Llenes to the crime, such as the bloodied scissors and his shirts with drops of blood. They also confirmed in CCTV footage obtained in the initial parts of the investigation that Llenes was with Christine the night before she was found dead. - scissors used by self-confessed suspect Renato Llenes to murder 17-year-old Christine Lee Silawan in Cebu.

On May 24, 2020, a year after confessing to the gruesome crime, Renato Llenes was found dead inside his detention cell's comfort room at the Lapu-Lapu City Jail after purportedly taking his own life. Earlier, despite confessing to the crime, Llenes's camp had tried to enter into a plea bargain agreement, wherein he would enter a guilty plea with the condition that the case will be downgraded to homicide instead of murder. However, the prosecution camp did not agree to the plea bargain as they were confident of claiming a conviction with their evidence on hand. Court proceedings regarding the case were stalled due to the government-imposed lockdown.

Initially, the prosecution had already presented one witness from the police force to testify how Llenes became their suspect for the death of Silawan. Aside from the police reports and Llenes' earlier confession, the latter's live-in partner and some neighbors are also among those who are supposed to testify against Llenes in court. Subsequently, the case of Christine Silawan's killing was closed. This case prompted the public to reinstate Death Penalty.

EFFORTPOST Kiss nightclub fire

The Kiss nightclub fire, one of the most devastating tragedies in Brazilian history, occurred in the early hours of January 27, 2013, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This catastrophic event resulted in the loss of 242 lives and left at least 630 people injured. The incident unfolded at a freshers' ball organized by students from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), with most victims aged between 18 and 30 years.

What contributed to this happening:

The fire was ignited by a pyrotechnic device, similar to a signaling flare, used by the band Gurizada Fandangueira during their performance. The pyrotechnics accidentally set alight the flammable acoustic foam in the ceiling of the nightclub. Contributing to the high number of casualties was the lack of emergency exits; the club only had one main entrance and exit, leading to a deadly crowd crush as people attempted to escape. Colonel Guido Pedroso de Melo of the Rio Grande do Sul Fire Department reported that the club's front door was locked, trapping the victims inside.

The fire started and the band soon after a few minutes noticed the fire and all the people panicked. Many people were trampled to death as they tried to flee, But the vast majority confused the exit door with the bathroom, due to the only light there was in the middle of the darkness of the place and all that smoke. Piles of charred bodies were forming in the bathroom. The burning foam released cyanide, which rendered those young people unconscious and killed them. Whoever entered the bathroom thinking it was the way out, couldn't get out, and then died there... The Kiss nightclub had not been inspected since 2012 and the fire extinguishers were broken, empty and in some places there were no extinguishers.

Television coverage made on the day of the incident, where the reporter talks about many people being prevented from leaving due to the very narrow exit, which resulted in people being trampled and suffocated inside. It is possible to see survivors trying to help firefighters remove people who were unable to get out. Later survivors of the fire stated that security guards tried to block the public from leaving during the fire until they were knocked down by the crowd. Those in the VIP wing had a better chance of survival because the location was closer to the exit.

Condolences and my solidarity with the relatives of the victims and survivors of this tragedy. The whole of Brazil still does not believe that this has happened. There were 242 lives taken, 242 destinations interrupted, 242 families that cry to this day. May this never happen again.
And may the culprits be duly punished.

EFFORTPOST What happens to pedophiles and sex offenders in prison || INFOPOST

Video above is an alleged pedophile being burned in a Brazil prison :marseycupid: :marseyupmarsey:

I unfortunately do not have much context for the event. The incident likely occurred because in many Brazil prisons, there is 1 guard per 30 prisoners, although the recommended prisoner to guard ratio is 1:5.

With Brazilian prisons, there are even inmates who are considered “keyholders” who are given keys and have access to every cell. They often are drug dealers, selling cell space, and it even leads to instances of rape and violence.

Brazil has had an extensive history of unusual and extremely unprofessional enforcement in their prisons, leading to riots, escapes, murder, going so far as beheading. It is a saying that "going to a Brazil prison is a death sentence."

What happens to pedophiles and sex offenders in prison? Do they always get caught?

It would be safe to assume that pedophiles and child abusers do not have a “fun time” in jail. If not in complete isolation, protective custody, or the reason for their incarceration is not confidential… Many are assaulted, raped and killed before their sentence is complete.

HOWEVER is very common for sexual abuse to remain unreported, and even for incidents that are reported, are left unsolved. Those convicted of their crimes do not always get the most harsh sentencing; although it is absolutely needed and deserved.

Some examples of those who got away with sexual offenses and sexually abusing children:

Christopher Betler, a 20 year old New York man, plead guilty to the rape and molestation of 4 girls as young as 15. The crime occurred when he was 17. The judge originally only gave him only 2 years of probation; Betler violated his probation by accessing pornagraphy on his computer instead got 8 years of probation, no jail time.

Maria Childers, A 25 year old Kentucky transgender woman, Got a plea deal to avoid jail time after sexually abusing an infant in a daycare center. She hired a transgender advocate lawyer.

She was arrested on $100,000 bond and released last month, almost a year later. She will now remain free if she agrees to make no contact with children and stay away from the daycare she worked at.

This post is NOT meant for hate or debate about transgender individuals, I used this case an example to emphasize how much sex offenders can truly get away with.

Nathan Daniel Larson, a 42 year old Virginian man, a politician who ran a child pornography site and attempted to kidnap a 12 year old girl. He was then arrested, while awaiting trial, he had a hunger strike and was hospitalized. He managed to avoid charges by committing suicide by starvation while in custody.

Why do they get away with it? What is rape culture?

There has been a rise in instances where United States judges give extremely lenient, and wildly inappropriate sentences to those who commit sexual crimes. The pattern of this happening is speculated to be because of the uprising of "rape culture". A culture, trend, and even mindset that normalizes sexual abuse, claims it is inevitable and blames their victims. Victim blaming is often claimed to be a psychological phenomenon, when not wanting to believe someone you know and care about did something bad to another individual.

If you are a victim of sexual abuse, yes, even if you are a male, I hope you know it is NOT your fault and you did not do anything to deserve it. Please know that you are not alone.

Consent and sexual education

The lines of consent are askew and blurred, there is NO legal definition of consent, and it even varies state to state. There are even different legal definitions of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse in each state as well. MANY schools in the United States do not discuss sexual education, consent, and boundaries. In a study conducted by the CDC, they found 8 in 10 teenagers didn't get sex education until after they'd already had sex.

But in a survey of more than 3,000 high school students and young adults nationwide, the overwhelming majority reported they had never been taught how to avoid sexually harassing others or to cope with being groped, catcalled, or bullied in sexual ways. If children and teens are not taught how to respect the boundaries of their peers, or taught anything about how healthy sexual interaction is supposed to be, how will they ever grasp the concept of consent and safe sexual interaction as an adult?

Believe what you want about sexual education but just know, consent is not only a sex skill, but also a life skill.

The brutality of prisons, and how they treat pedophiles and sex offenders

Many prisoners take it amongst themselves in a form of street justice, wanting to gain respect from their peers, and possibly getting their anger out about their incarceration on someone who deserves it.

Many prisoners are parents, many have been abused themselves, and do not tolerate that kind of person in their environment. Prisoners torment pedophiles and child abusers by defecating and urinating in their food and cells. Taking their belongings and food, assaulting, torturing them and it is even common for their throats to get slit as a tradition in certain states.

Jonathan Watson, a life sentenced prisoner, killed 2 pedophiles who were both convicted for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14. He beat them both with a cane. He gave warnings to the guards of his plans to do so, they did not stop him.

Richard Huckle, considered one of the UK's worst pedophiles, having sexually abused over 200 children, was brutally murdered by another inmate named Paul Fitzgerald. Paul was planning on murdering 2-3 other inmates but claimed he had "too much fun" murdering Richard. He strangled Richard with a cord, then shoved a pen inside of his brain. Huckle was found gagged and bound by his hands and feet with severe injuries to his face and with an incision made on his neck from a shank made with a melted toothbrush.

General Info

the Columbine High School massacre, took place on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, United States. Perpetrated by twelfth-grade students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, it involved a school shooting and attempted bombing. The perpetrators killed twelve students and one teacher. Ten of the victims were in the school library, where Harris and Klebold subsequently took their own lives. Additionally, twenty-one individuals sustained gunshot wounds, and there was an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. Three others were injured while attempting to flee. At the time, the Columbine massacre stood as the deadliest mass shooting at a K-12 school in U.S. history, until it was surpassed by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, and later the Robb Elementary School shooting in May 2022. It also held the grim distinction of being the deadliest mass shooting at a high school in U.S. history until the Parkland high school shooting in February 2018. To this day, Columbine remains the deadliest mass shooting and school shooting in the state of Colorado.

Harris and Klebold meticulously planned the attack for at least a year, aiming to inflict a high number of casualties. Their original plan was to primarily carry out a bombing, with the shooting serving as a secondary measure. However, when several homemade bombs failed to detonate, they resorted to gunfire. The motive behind their actions remains inconclusive.

Eric David Harris (April 9, 1981 – April 20, 1999) was born in Wichita, Kansas. The Harris family lived in rented accommodations for their first three years in the Littleton area. During this time, Harris attended Ken Caryl Middle School, where he met Klebold.

Dylan Bennet Klebold ( September 11, 1981 – April 20, 1999) was born in Lakewood, Colorado. Klebold attended Normandy Elementary in Littleton, Colorado for first and second grade before transferring to Governor's Ranch Elementary

Plan for the Shooting

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold planned the shooting at least 1 year before the event, during this period they produced countless tapes, which portray them preparing for the day of the shooting, The main tapes are “Rampant Range” where Dylan and Eric exercise their aim with guns and “Hitmen for Hire” where Eric and Dylan portay themself as “saviors”.

Shooting Day

after filming a short video saying their goodbye to their loved one, they get in to the car and drive to their school, According to the shooters' respective journals and video tapes, it is believed by investigators that the pair intended to detonate their propane bombs in the cafeteria at the busiest lunch hour, killing hundreds of students. After this, they would shoot and stab survivors, as well as lob bombs. Bombs set in their cars in the parking lot would also eventually detonate, killing more students as well as possibly any police officers, paramedics, firemen, or reporters who had come to the school. However, the bombs in the cafeteria and cars failed to detonate.

Several official sources claim they planned to shoot the fleeing survivors from the parking lot but, when the bombs failed, they moved to the staircase on the hill at the west side. Other sources claim the top of the staircase where the massacre began was their preferred spot to wait for the bombs to go off all along.

A total of 188 rounds of ammunition were fired by the perpetrators during the massacre. Firing nearly twice as much as Klebold, Harris fired his carbine rifle a total of 96 times: 47 shots outside, 36 shots inside, and 13 shots in the library. Harris also discharged his shotgun 25 times: 21 times in the library and four times inside. Klebold fired the TEC-9 handgun 55 times: three shots outside, 31 shots inside, and 21 shots in the library. Klebold also fired 12 rounds from his double-barreled shotgun: twice outside, four times inside, and six times in the library. Law enforcement officers fired 141 rounds during exchanges of gunfire with the shooters.

Eric's Car

Harris and Klebold placed two duffel bags in the cafeteria. Each bag contained propane bombs, set to detonate during the "A" lunch shift, which began at 11:15 a.m.

No witness recalled seeing the duffel bags being added to the 400 or so backpacks that were already in the cafeteria. The security staff at CHS did not observe the bags being placed in the cafeteria; a custodian was replacing the school security videotape at around 11:14 a.m. Shortly after the massacre, police speculated the bombs were placed during this "tape change". They also investigated whether the bombs were placed during the "after-prom" party held the prior weekend. Some Internet sleuths claim the bomb placement can be seen on the surveillance video at around 10:58 a.m. Harris and Klebold are seen in the tapes planting the bombs in casual school clothes separately.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Neil Gardner was assigned to the high school as a full-time school resource officer. Gardner usually ate lunch with students in the cafeteria, but on April 20 he was eating lunch in his patrol car at the northwest corner of the campus, watching students in the Smokers' Pit in Clement Park, a meadow adjacent to the school.

Two backpacks filled with pipe bombs, aerosol canisters, and small propane bombs were also placed in a field about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of CHS, and 2 mi (3.2 km) south of the fire station. The bombs were intended as a diversion to draw firefighters and emergency personnel away from the school. Only the pipe bombs and one of the aerosol canisters detonated, causing a small fire, which was quickly extinguished by the fire department. It went off after first having been moved. Bomb technicians immediately examined the bombs and relayed to police at the school the possibility of devices with motion activators.

Harris and Klebold changed clothes and returned separately to CHS. Harris parked his vehicle in the junior student parking lot, and Klebold parked in the adjoining senior student parking lot. The school cafeteria was their primary bomb target; the cafeteria had a long outside window-wall, ground-level doors, and was just north of the senior parking lot. The library was located above the cafeteria in the second-story of the window-wall. Each car contained bombs.

As Harris pulled into the parking lot, he encountered classmate Brooks Brown, with whom he had recently patched up a longstanding series of disputes. According to Brown, who was smoking a cigarette, he was surprised to see Harris, whom he earlier noted had been absent from a class test. Harris, a good student, was unlikely to miss school days with important academic obligation. Brown berated Harris for missing the test. Harris, acting unconcerned, replied "It doesn't matter anymore." Harris went on: "Brooks, I like you now. Get out of here. Go home." Brown, feeling uneasy and already prepared to skip his next class, walked away down South Pierce Street.

The cafeteria bombs failed to detonate. Had these explosives detonated as intended, they would have killed or severely wounded the 488 students in the cafeteria and damaged the school's structure, collapsing the library into the cafeteria and possibly killing more students and staff

Narration of the Events

11:19 Start of the Massacre

the shooting commenced. Rachel Scott, 17 years old, and her companion Richard Castaldo were enjoying lunch on the grass by the school's west entrance. Klebold tossed a pipe bomb towards the parking lot, but it only partially detonated, emitting smoke. Castaldo dismissed it as a mere senior prank, as did several other students initially. Witnesses heard shouts of "Go! Go!" before Klebold and Harris revealed their firearms concealed beneath their trench coats and began shooting. They then returned to where Rachel Scott and Richard Castaldo were injured on the ground. Scott succumbed instantly to four rounds from Harris's carbine, one of which struck her left temple. Castaldo was shot eight times by both perpetrators, leaving him unconscious and paralyzed below the chest.

Klebold's TEC-9 malfunctioned after two shots, prompting him to pause briefly to fix it by reloading. Meanwhile, Harris removed his trench coat and aimed his carbine towards Daniel Rohrbough, Sean Graves, and Lance Kirklin on the west staircase. Mistaking the guns for paintball markers, the students began ascending the stairs directly below the shooters. Harris discharged ten rounds, fatally striking Rohrbough and injuring Graves and Kirklin. Turning westward, Harris fired seven shots towards five students on the grassy hillside near the west entrance. Michael Johnson sustained injuries but managed to flee, while Mark Taylor pretended to be dead after being shot. Klebold descended the steps toward the cafeteria, firing at Rohrbough's body and then shooting Kirklin in the jaw. Despite severe injuries, Kirklin survived. Graves, paralyzed, crawled to the cafeteria entrance, feigning death after rubbing his blood on his face.

Klebold briefly entered the cafeteria without firing at those inside, speculated to have checked on the propane bombs. Meanwhile, Harris continued shooting, injuring Anne-Marie Hochhalter as she attempted to escape. Klebold rejoined Harris, and they both fired at students near a soccer field without hitting anyone. They then proceeded towards the west entrance, throwing pipe bombs in various directions. Inside, art teacher Patti Nielson and student Brian Anderson headed towards the west entrance, assuming it was a student prank or video shoot. As Anderson opened the doors, the gunmen fired, injuring him with glass fragments and Nielson in the shoulder. They fled back into the school, where Nielson alerted students to hide under desks. She dialed 9-1-1 and took cover under the library counter, while Anderson sought refuge in the adjacent magazine room.

11:29 to 11:36 Library massacre

At 11:29 a.m., Harris and Klebold entered the library. Fifty-two students, two teachers and two librarians were inside. Harris yelled at everyone to "GET UP!" loud enough to be heard on the 911 call. When no one complied, Harris yelled, "Fine! I'll start shooting anyway!"

Harris fired his shotgun twice at a desk. Student Evan Todd had been standing near a pillar when the shooters entered the library and had just taken cover behind a photocopier. Todd was hit by wood splinters in the eye and lower back but was not seriously injured. He then hid behind the administrative counter.

The gunmen walked into the library, towards the two rows of computers. Sitting at the north row was disabled student Kyle Velasquez. Klebold fired his shotgun, fatally hitting him in the head and back. They put down their ammunition-filled duffel bags at the south or lower row of computers and reloaded their weapons. They then walked between the computer rows, toward the windows facing the outside staircase.

Throughout the massacre in the library, they ordered everybody to get up, said how long they had been waiting for this, and seemed to be enjoying themselves, shouting things like "Woo!" after shooting. While ordering the jocks to stand up, one of the two said, "Anybody with a white hat or a sports emblem on it is dead." Wearing a white baseball cap at Columbine was a tradition among sports team members. Nobody stood up, and several students tried to hide their white hats.

Windows were shot out in the direction of the recently arrived police. Officers returned fire, and the gunmen retreated from the windows; no one was injured. Klebold removed his trench coat. He then fired his shotgun at a nearby table, injuring three students: Patrick Ireland, Daniel Steepleton, and Makai Hall.

Harris walked toward the lower row of computer desks with his shotgun and fired a single shot under the first desk while down on one knee. He hit 14-year-old Steven Curnow with a mortal wound to the neck. He then moved to the adjacent computer desk, injuring 17-year-old Kacey Ruegsegger with a shot which passed completely through her right shoulder, also grazing her neck and severing a major artery. When she started gasping in pain, Harris said, "Quit your bitching."

Harris then walked to a table south of the lower computer table, with two students underneath: Cassie Bernall and Emily Wyant. Harris slapped the surface of the table twice as he knelt, and said "Peek-a-boo" before shooting Bernall once in the head with the shotgun, killing her. Harris at this point held the gun with one hand, and the weapon hit his face in recoil, injuring his nose. He told Klebold he had done so, and Klebold responded "Why'd you do that?"

After fatally shooting Bernall, Harris turned toward the next table, where Bree Pasquale sat next to the table rather than under it. Harris's nose was bleeding; witnesses later reported that he had blood around his mouth. Harris asked Pasquale if she wanted to die, and she responded with a plea for her life. Harris laughed and responded "Everyone's gonna die." When Klebold said "shoot her," Harris responded "No, we're gonna blow up the school anyway."

Klebold noticed Ireland trying to provide aid to Hall, who had suffered a wound to his knee. As Ireland tried to help Hall, his head rose above the table. Klebold shot him a second time, hitting him twice in the head and once in the foot. Ireland was knocked unconscious but survived. Klebold then walked toward another table, where he discovered 18-year-old Isaiah Shoels, 16-year-old Matthew Kechter, and 16-year-old Craig Scott (Rachel's younger brother), hiding underneath. Klebold called out to Harris that he found a "BIPOC" and tried to pull Shoels out from under the table.

Harris left Pasquale and joined him. According to witnesses, they taunted Shoels for a few seconds, making derogatory racial comments. The gunmen both fired under the table; Harris shot Shoels once in the chest, killing him, and Klebold shot and killed Kechter. Though Shoels was not shot in the head, Klebold said: "I didn't know black brains could fly that far." Meanwhile, Scott was uninjured, lying in the blood of his friends, feigning death. Harris then yelled, "Who's ready to die next?!"

He turned and threw a "cricket" at the table where Hall, Steepleton, and Ireland were located. It landed on Steepleton's thigh; Hall quickly noticed it and tossed it behind them, and it exploded in mid-air. Harris walked toward the bookcases between the west and center section of tables in the library. He jumped on one and shook it, apparently attempting to topple it, then shot at the books which had fallen.

Klebold walked to the east area of the library. Harris walked from the bookcase, past the central area to meet Klebold. The latter shot at a display case next to the door, then turned and shot toward the closest table, hitting and injuring 17-year-old Mark Kintgen in the head and shoulder. He then turned toward the table to his left and fired, injuring 18-year-olds Lisa Kreutz, Lauren Townsend, and Valeen Schnurr with the same shotgun blast. Klebold then moved toward the same table and fired several shots with the TEC-9, killing Townsend.

At this point, the seriously injured Valeen Schnurr began screaming, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God!" In response, Klebold asked Schnurr if she believed in the existence of God; when Schnurr replied she did, Klebold asked "Why?" and commented "God is gay." Klebold reloaded but walked away from the table.

Harris approached another table where two girls were hiding. He bent down to look at them and dismissed them as "pathetic". Harris then moved to another table where he fired twice, injuring 16-year-olds Nicole Nowlen and John Tomlin. Tomlin moved out from under the table. Klebold shot him repeatedly, killing him.

After Savage left, Harris turned and fired his carbine at the table directly north of where he had been, hitting the ear and hand of 15-year-old Daniel Mauser. Mauser retaliated by either shoving a chair at Harris or grabbing at his leg; Harris fired again and hit Mauser in the center of the face at close range, killing him. Harris then moved south and fired three shots under another table, critically injuring two 17-year-olds, Jennifer Doyle and Austin Eubanks. Klebold then shot once, fatally wounding 17-year-old Corey DePooter, at 11:35. There were no further victims. They had killed 10 people in the library and wounded 12.

Klebold was quoted as saying they might start knifing people, though they never did. They headed towards the library's main counter. Harris threw a Molotov cocktail toward the southwestern end of the library, but it failed to explode. They converged close to where Todd had moved after having been wounded. Klebold pulled the chair out from the desk, then he pointed his TEC-9 at Todd, who was wearing a white hat. Klebold asked if he was a jock, and when Todd said no Klebold responded "Well, that's good. We don't like jocks." Klebold then demanded to see his face; Todd partly lifted his hat so his face would remain obscured. When Klebold asked Todd to give him one reason why he should not kill him, Todd said: "I don't want trouble." Klebold responded back angrily "Trouble? You don't even know what fucking trouble is!" Todd tried to correct himself: "That's not what I meant! I mean, I don't have a problem with you guys. I never will and I never did." Klebold then told Harris he was going to let Todd live, but that Harris could kill him if he wanted

Harris appeared to pay no attention and stated that he and Klebold should head to the cafeteria. Klebold fired into an open library staff break room, hitting a small television. While Harris was walking away, Klebold said, "One more thing!", then picked up the chair beside the library counter under which Patti Nielson was hiding, and slammed the chair down on top of the computer terminal and library counter. Klebold joined Harris at the library entrance. The two walked out of the library at 11:36. Cautiously, fearing the shooters' return, 10 injured and 29 uninjured survivors began to evacuate the library through the north emergency exit door, which led to the sidewalk adjacent to the west entrance. Kacey Ruegsegger was evacuated from the library by Craig Scott. Had she not been evacuated at this point, Ruegsegger would likely have bled to death from her injuries.Patrick Ireland, unconscious, and Lisa Kreutz, unable to move, remained in the building. Patti Nielson crawled into the exterior break room, into which Klebold had earlier fired shots, and hid in a cupboard.

12:08 Suicides

After leaving the library, Harris and Klebold entered the science area, where they caused a fire in an empty storage closet. It was extinguished by a teacher who had hidden in an adjacent room. The gunmen then proceeded toward the south hallway, where they shot into an empty science room. At 11:44 a.m., they were captured on the school security cameras as they re-entered the cafeteria. The recording shows Harris crouching against the rail on the staircase and firing toward the propane bombs left in the cafeteria, in an unsuccessful attempt to detonate them.As Klebold approached the propane bomb and examined it, Harris took a drink from one of the cups left behind. Klebold lit a Molotov cocktail and threw it at the propane bomb. About a minute later, the gallon of fuel attached to the bomb ignited, causing a fire that was extinguished by the fire sprinklers a few minutes later.[149] They left the cafeteria at 11:46.

After leaving the cafeteria, they returned to the main north and south hallways of the school and fired several shots into walls and ceilings as students and teachers hid in rooms. They walked through the south hallway into the main office before returning to the north hallway. At 11:56, they returned to the cafeteria, and briefly entered the school kitchen.[98] They returned up the staircase and into the south hallway at 12:00 p.m.

They re-entered the library, which was empty of survivors except for the unconscious Ireland and the injured Kreutz. Once inside, at 12:02 p.m., police were shot at again through the library windows and returned fire. Nobody was injured in the exchange. By 12:05, all gunfire from the school had ceased. By 12:08 p.m., both gunmen had killed themselves. Harris sat down with his back to a bookshelf and fired his shotgun through the roof of his mouth; Klebold went down on his knees and shot himself in the left temple with his TEC-9. An article by The Rocky Mountain News stated that Patti Nielson overheard them shout "One! Two! Three!" in unison, just before a loud boom. Klebold's gun was underneath his body and so unseen in the photo, leading to speculation that Harris shot Klebold before killing himself. However, some of Klebold's blood was on Harris's legs, suggesting that he had fallen onto Harris after Harris had already killed himself. Also, just before shooting himself, Klebold lit a Molotov cocktail on a nearby table, underneath which Patrick Ireland was lying, which caused the tabletop to momentarily catch fire. Underneath the scorched film of material was a piece of Harris's brain matter, suggesting Harris had shot himself by this point.

Crime Scene Aftermath

Charles Frederick Albright was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1933 and adopted when he was just weeks old by Fred and Delle Albright. The couple lived in a middle-class suburb; Fred was a grocer and Delle was a schoolteacher. According to an in-depth Texas Monthly feature, Delle was both a strict and smothering mother who sometimes dressed her son in girl's clothing, tied him to his bed as punishment, and insisted on chauffeuring him when he began dating in high school.

When Charles was 11 years old, his mother enrolled him in a taxidermy course after she caught him killing small animals. He practiced the crafts of dissecting, skinning and stuffing on dead birds, but according to Texas Monthly, rather than spring for expensive fake eyes, his mother insisted that he use buttons. Even though Albright performed well in school, he began his foray into the criminal as a teenager. Around age 17, he spent months in prison for theft and receiving stolen goods, according to a timeline by Radford University.

After his stint in jail, Albright attended Arkansas State Teacher's College, where he studied anatomy with the intention of becoming a surgeon. Texas Monthly writer Skip Hollandsworth wrote of a troubling prank Albright pulled in college: he cut out the eyes of their ex-girlfriend from photographs and pasted them around campus. Albright, though charming and seemingly popular, was kicked out of the school after being caught in possession of stolen goods. He later forged documents saying he had earned his degrees.

Throughout his adult life, Charles Albright would alternate between the straight life and a life of crime. He married and had a daughter, creating the image of an everyday suburban dad, but also racked up arrests for theft and forging documents and checks. In 1985, he pleaded guilty to sexually molesting the preteen daughter of a family he had met through his church, for which he only received probation.

But soon his crimes would add up to a much more sinister picture.

police found the body of 33-year old sex worker Mary Lou Pratt dumped in a field and naked to the waist. She had been beaten and shot in the back of the head. While performing her autopsy, medical examiners discovered her eyes had been carefully removed, reported the New York Daily News. As if a surgeon or someone with medical training had done it. Eyes are very delicate.

Almost two months later to the day, on the morning of February 10, 1991, the body of 27-year-old sex worker Susan Beth Peterson was discovered on the same road as Pratt. Like the previous victim, she was found nearly nude and died with a shot to the head. Her eyes had been meticulously removed, establishing a pattern. While police never released details of the murders, news spread about the killer, who was dubbed “The Dallas Ripper” and “The Dallas Slasher” by the press.

The killer's third victim was found on March 19, 1991, her naked body propped up against a tree on a residential street, across from a grade school. Shirley Williams, 45, had been shot in the head. The broken blade of an X-ACTO knife was found embedded in the skin around her right eye: a sloppier removal than before.

Police began interviewing sex workers in downtown Dallas about any suspicious incidents or violent customers they may have encountered in the months around the murders. Brenda Smith told police she had recently escaped a violent John after spraying him with mace, according to the New York Daily News.

Veronica Rodriguez claimed she had been raped and nearly killed by a white man in South Dallas, near the Mary Pratt crime scene, before fleeing to the house of a man later identified as Axton Schindler. Schindler rented a house from the deceased Fred Albright — which is how Charles Albright was eventually identified. A deputy recalled hearing Albright's name on a tip line, from someone who said her friend, victim Mary Pratt, had briefly dated a man who was obsessed with eyes and had a large collection of X-ACTO blades. (Both women later identified their attacker as Charles Albright, though Rodriguez later refused to testify against him.)

Police arrested Albright on March 22, 1991. He made his living as a carpenter and lived with his girlfriend, but was also a known customer to many sex workers in the Dallas area. During a search of his home, police found a stash of X-ACTO knives, a copy of Gray's Anatomy, and at least a dozen books on true-crime and serial killers, according to Texas Monthly. Hair fibers found in his truck also connected him to all three murders. The murder weapons and the missing eyeballs were never located.

Albright's trial began in late November 1991, though it mostly relied on circumstantial evidence. Prosecutors were ultimately forced to dismiss charges against Albright for the Pratt and Peterson murders. However, he was found guilty of the murder of Shirley Williams and sentenced to

Charles Albright is now dead. He died of natural causes at the age of 87 on August 10, 2020.

EFFORTPOST The Burning Monk - first self-immolation ever recorded on video - 1963 -

Thich Quang Duc was born in 1897 in Hoi Khanh, a village located in central Vietnam, Khanh Hoa province. Fragmentary information on his life is known only from Buddhist literature. Coming from a large family, he had six siblings. He was born as Lam Van Tuc (Lâm Văn Tức in Vietnamese). He entered a Mahayana Buddhist monastery when he was seven. He became a monk at the age of twenty under the name Thich Quang Duc. In 1932, he was appointed an inspector and was over time responsible for the building of 14 temples. In 1934, he moved to southern Vietnam and became a teacher. He also spent two years in Cambodia. After that, he began to oversee the construction of further temples. In total, he was responsible for 31 new temples. In 1943, he moved to Saigon where he worked as the chairman of a panel on ceremonial rites. In the following years, he became one of the leading spiritual figures of Vietnamese Buddhism.

In the beginning of the 1960s, religious tension in South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam) had escalated. A predominantly Buddhist country was ruled by the authoritative and Christian president Ngo Dinh Diem (Ngô Đình Diệm in Vietnamese). Rampant corruption, favouring Roman Catholics for public service, and disregard of the president for Buddhist traditions had sparked street clashes in Saigon, leaving nine protesters dead after the violent crackdown in May 1963. The Buddhist reaction took the form of a shocking protest that built on an older tradition, cases of self-immolation having been previously recorded in Vietnam and also in China. On 10 June 1963, American journalists in Saigon were notified that something unspecified would happen in front of the Embassy of Cambodia the next day. The Buddhists probably chose the place because of the then tense relations between Cambodia and South Vietnam. Since the Buddhists had been protesting against the ruling regime for a long time already, only several journalists arrived, including The New York Times correspondent David Halberstam and the Associated Press photographer Malcolm W. Browne.

Thic Quang Duc Self-immolation

According to Halberstam, several hundred Buddhist monks, who left the main Saigon pagoda around 10 a.m. on 11 June 1963, marched into the busy junction. A blue Austin Westminster sedan led the March. At the junction, Thich Quang Duc got out of the car accompanied by two monks. One of them laid a cushion on the street and Duc sat down on it in the lotus position. The other took a five-gallon petrol can out of the boot and poured the petrol over Duc. Duc then recited a short mantra used by Buddhists to calm their mind. Then he struck a match and set himself on fire. He burst into flames immediately. The on-looking crowd chanted slogans, some cried, some bowed to the burning monk. After ten minutes, the lifeless body fell to the ground. When the flames went out, one of the monks repeated into a microphone again and again, first in Vietnamese and then in English: “A Buddhist priest burns himself to death. A Buddhist priest becomes a martyr.” The monks carried Duc's remains away to bury them. According to tradition, the heart remained intact after the cremation and was venerated as a relic. Also because of this, Duc has been revered by Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhists as bodhisattva, someone who has achieved enlightenment (many other Buddhists reject his act as incompatible with the teachings of Buddha).

Malcolm Browne's photograph in color

Duc stressed in a farewell letter that he decided to immolate himself in order to press President Diem to establish religious tolerance. He wrote that self-immolation is a sacrifice for Buddhism. The regime leadership proclaimed that the event was a conspiracy of Cambodia and local communists. At the end of June 1963, the government announced that Duc had been drugged before his self-immolation. The First Lady also provoked outrage when she cynically wrote in a letter to The New York Times that she “would clap hands at seeing another monk barbecue show.” Religious tension did not defuse in the following weeks, and three more monks immolated themselves in August 1963. Eventually, president Diem, who gradually lost the support of the United States, was overthrown and killed on 2 November 1963.

Duc's protest drew a strong response not only in South Vietnam but also in other countries, thanks to the American journalists. A picture of the burning monk taken by Brown won the 1963 World Press Photo of the Year award, and Brown himself won a Pulitzer prize in 1964. Self-immolation in South Vietnam, interpreted as a part of the struggle against American imperialism, was often covered by the official media in communist countries. Paradoxically, this form of political protest became an inspiration for a number of people in the Soviet bloc. At present, there is a street named after Duc in the Vietnamese capital of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). A monumental memorial has been erected not far from the place where he performed his radical protest

Jeffrey James Weise, born August 8 1988.

It seems that many people knew Jeff Weise, but few knew him well. He was described as a loner, although this is not true since he had some friends, students say that he was sometimes bullied, but as he was tall and strong, they only attacked him with words, Jeff rarely responded to the provocations. Jeff was always wearing black clothes and drawing skulls and swastikas in his notebooks and he contributed to racist websites. Jeff hadn't been to school for several months. He was expelled for violating school rules and was in a program that offered in-home tutoring. Some people remembered him as quiet, friendly and non-threatening, others said they were afraid of him. Ashley Morrison says she and her friends thought Jeff was "weird".

"We always suspected he would do something, but nothing like this." It seems like everyone remembers Jeff Weise as an introvert. Wanda Baxter had him as a student in her traditional culture class in Red Lake two years ago. She said he was quiet, never a troublemaker “He was a good listener".

Jeff had grown up with a difficult and disrupted family life; his parents were a young unmarried couple who separated before he was born. His mother, Joanne Weise, was 17 years old at the time of his birth. Joanne's family insisted that she give up her son to the father, Daryl Lussier Jr., who lived with his parents and family in Red Lake. Jeff did not live with his mother again until after he was two years old, when she reclaimed him and took him to live in Minneapolis. In later online postings, Weise wrote that his mother was an alcoholic and was sometimes physically and emotionally abusive. In 1992, his mother began dating a man who allegedly also abused Jeff. After having two children, the couple married on June 27, 1998. Weise moved around often because of his mother, and attended several different schools during his adolescence. In 2002, Weise was forced to repeat the eighth grade because of failing grades and truancy. In 1997, when Jeff was eight years old, his father died by suicide aged 32, shooting himself after a days-long standoff with Red Lake tribal police. Weise's grandfather, Daryl Lussier Sr., was a sergeant with the tribal police and was involved in the standoff. Two years later, his mother was in an alcohol-related car accident and suffered severe brain damage. She had to be committed to a nursing home for rehabilitation. Jeff was placed in the custody of his paternal grandmother, having to leave Minneapolis, where he had lived most of his life, to live with her and other paternal relatives on the Red Lake reservation.

Jeff became close to his paternal grandfather and his younger companion, Michele Sigana, who had given him his own room with them. The family said he had a good relationship with both. In 2000, his mother and her husband separated; they completed the divorce in May 2004. Their custody arrangements covered only the children they had together, and not Weise. By 2003, his mother had moved to an assisted-living facility; she had recovered enough from her accident to work part-time, and had regained speech. Jeff chose to stay with his grandmother rather than rejoin his mother and move again.

Jeff was discovered to have been quite active on the Internet. According to "The Smoking Gun", Weise created two violent Flash animations for the flash website Newgrounds, using the alias "Regret". One animation, entitled "Target Practice", features a character who murders three people with a rifle, blows up a police car with a grenade, and kills a Klansman. The 30-second animation ends with the shooter putting the gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger. Weise had created another Flash animation, entitled "Clown", in which a clown kills a man by eating his head. A LiveJournal account, apparently created by Weise, contained three entries posted between December 2004 and January 2005. The weblog was customized to be rendered in black and white. In his posts, Weise expressed his desire for change and salvation in his life.

:sniper: Target Practice animation made by Jeff:

On one occasion, he fought with a pupil whom he referred to as a "Communist". He also alleged that the school was warned that someone was going to "shoot up" the school on April 20, the birthday of Adolf Hitler and the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, and that the school authorities "pinned" the threat on him.

Later Weise was found to have posted numerous online comments expressing his frustration with living in Red Lake, and feelings that his life was beyond his control. He described the reservation "as a place where people 'choose alcohol over friendship', where women neglect 'their own flesh and blood' for relationships with men, where he could not escape 'the grave I'm continually digging for myself'". His depression led him to attempt suicide in May 2004, when he cut his wrist. He changed his mind, deciding "this was not the path", and posted his thoughts on the website Above Top Secret: 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚. The day of the shooting, Jeff retrieved a Ruger MK II .22 caliber pistol from his bedroom and fatally shot his grandfather as he was sleeping; he shot him two times in the head and ten times in the chest. According to Weise's friends, the teenager may have had the gun for as long as a year. He took Lussier's two police-issue weapons, a .40 caliber Glock 22 pistol and a 12 gauge Remington 870 pump-action shotgun, a gun belt and a bulletproof vest. Weise then fatally shot Sigana, his grandfather's girlfriend, two times in the head as she carried laundry up the stairs.

Jeff then drove his grandfather's squad car to Red Lake Senior High School, arriving at around 2:45 p.m. CST. As he entered the school through the main entrance, he encountered two unarmed security guards manning a metal detector. Weise shot and killed security guard Derrick Brun with the shotgun, while the other security guard escaped without injury. Weise proceeded into the main corridor of the school.

Jeff began shooting into an English classroom, killing three students and one teacher, and wounding three students. One student said that Chase Lussier (no direct relation to Weise's father or grandfather) sheltered her, and was one of those shot and killed by Weise. Jeffrey May, a 16-year-old sophomore, tried to wrestle Weise inside the classroom and stabbed him in the stomach with a pencil. May's diversion allowed students to flee the classroom to safety, but Weise shot him two times in the neck and once in the jaw, leaving him seriously injured.

Witnesses said Weise smiled as he was shooting at people. One witness said that he asked a student if he believed in God. This is believed to have been a reference to a widely publicized exchange during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre between perpetrator Dylan Klebold and Columbine survivor Valeen Schnur.

At around 2:52 p.m., Jeff returned to the main entrance, where he killed two students and wounded two others. The police had arrived quickly and engaged him in gunfire. FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe said the shootout lasted for about four minutes. None of the police officers were injured. After being hit three times in the lower back, right leg, and right arm by police gunfire, Weise retreated to the classroom where he had shot and killed the teacher and students. Remaining students in the class witnessed him lean against a wall, put the shotgun barrel to his chin, and fired, killing himself.

The shootings lasted nine minutes. Jeff fired a total of 59 shots during the shooting spree, 14 at his grandfather's home and 45 at the school. He fired 37 rounds from his grandfather's Glock handgun, 14 from his Ruger handgun, and eight from the shotgun.

The Keddie murders are an unsolved quadruple homicide that occurred over the night of April 11–12, 1981 in Keddie, California, United States. The victims were Glenna Susan "Sue" Sharp (née Davis; born March 29, 1945), daughter Tina Louise Sharp (born July 22, 1968), son John Steven Sharp (born November 16, 1965) and John's friend Dana Hall Wingate (born February 8, 1964).

The murders took place in house No. 28 of the Keddie Resort. The bodies of Wingate and Sue and John Sharp were found on the morning of April 12 by Sue's 14-year-old daughter Sheila, who had been sleeping at a friend's house. Sue's two younger sons, Rick and Greg, as well as their friend Justin Smartt, were also in the house but were unharmed. Tina was missing from the scene.

Tina remained a missing person until April 1984, when her skull and several other bones were recovered at Camp 18, California, near Feather Falls in Butte County. Multiple leads and suspects were examined in the intervening years, but no charges were filed. Several new leads were announced in the 21st century, including the discovery of a hammer in a pond in 2016 and the discovery of new DNA evidence.

In July 1979, Glenna Susan "Sue" Sharp (née Davis; born March 29, 1945, in Springfield, Massachusetts), along with her five children, left her home in Connecticut after separating from her husband, James Sharp. They relocated to northern California, where Sue's brother Don lived. Upon arriving in California, she rented a small trailer formerly occupied by her brother at the Claremont Trailer Village in Quincy. The following fall, she moved to house #28 in the rural Sierra Nevada railroad town of Keddie. The house was much larger than the trailer and had become available when Plumas County's sheriff Sylvester Douglas Thomas vacated the property. She resided there with her 15-year-old son John (born November 16, 1965),14-year-old daughter Sheila, 12-year-old daughter Tina (born July 22, 1968) and two younger sons, Rick (age 10) and Greg (age 5).

On April 11, 1981, at around 11:30 a.m., Sue, Sheila and Greg drove from the residence of their friends the Meeks family to retrieve Rick, who was attending baseball tryouts at Gansner Field in Quincy. They happened upon John and his friend Dana Hall Wingate (born February 8, 1964) hitchhiking at the mouth of the canyon from Quincy to Keddie and then drove them about 6 miles (9.7 km) away to Keddie. Two hours later, at around 3:30 p.m., John and Dana hitchhiked back to Quincy, where they may have had plans to visit friends. Around this time, the boys were seen in the city's downtown area.

That same evening, Sheila had plans to spend the night with the Seabolt family, who lived in adjacent #27, while Sue remained at home with Rick, Greg and the boys' young friend Justin Smartt. Sheila departed house #28 shortly after 8:00 p.m. to sleep at the Seabolt's. Tina, who had been watching television at the Seabolt residence, returned to #28 after asking what time it was at 9:30.

Murders and discovery-

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on the morning of April 12, Sheila returned to #28 and discovered the dead bodies of Sue, John and Dana in the house's living room. All three had been bound with medical tape and electrical cords. Tina was absent from the home, while the three younger children—Rick, Greg, and Justin—were found physically unharmed in an adjacent bedroom. Initial reports stated that the three young boys had slept through the incident, although this was later contradicted. Upon discovering the scene, Sheila rushed back to the Seabolt's' house, and Jamie Seabolt retrieved Rick, Greg and Justin through the bedroom window. He later admitted to having briefly entered the home through the back door to see if anyone was still alive, potentially contaminating evidence in the process.

The murders of Sue, John and Dana were especially vicious: two bloodied knives and one hammer were found at the scene, and one of the knives (a steak knife later determined to have been used in the murders) had been bent at roughly 30 degrees. Blood-spatter evidence from inside the house indicated that the murders had all taken place in the living room.

Sue was discovered lying on her side near the living room sofa, nude from the waist down and gagged with a blue bandana and her own underwear, which had been secured with tape. She had been stabbed in the chest and her throat was stabbed horizontally, the wound passing through her larynx and nicking her spine, and on the side of her head was an imprint matching the butt of a Daisy 880 Powerline BB/pellet rifle. John's throat was slashed. Dana had multiple head injuries and had been manually strangled to death. John and Dana suffered blunt-force trauma to their heads caused by one or more hammers. Autopsies determined that Sue and John died from the knife wounds and blunt-force trauma, and Dana died by asphyxiation.

Initial investigation-

crime scene, sketches, notes, ect -

Sheila and the Seabolt family (with whom Sheila had spent the night in the neighboring home) heard no commotion during the night; a couple living in nearby house #16 was awakened at 1:15 a.m. by what sounded like muffled screaming. Tina's jacket, shoes and a toolbox containing various tools were missing from the house, which showed no indication of forced entry. The house's telephone had been taken off the hook and the cord cut from the outlet, and the drapes were closed.

Martin Smartt, a neighbor and main suspect, claimed that a claw hammer had inexplicably gone missing from his home. Plumas County sheriff Sylvester Thomas, who presided over the case, later stated that Martin had provided "endless clues" in the case that seemed to "throw the suspicion away from him." In addition to interviewing the Smarts, detectives interviewed numerous other locals and neighbors; several, including members of the Seabolt family, recalled seeing a green van parked at the Sharps' house at around 9:00 p.m.

Original composite sketches of two suspects based on testimony from Justin, who claimed to have witnessed the crimes

Justin offered conflicting stories of the evening and stated that he had dreamed details of the murders, although he later claimed to have actually witnessed them. In his later account of events, told under hypnosis, he claimed to have awoken to sounds coming from the living room while asleep in the bedroom with Rick and Greg. Investigating these sounds, he saw Sue with two men: one with a mustache and short hair, the other clean-shaven with long hair; both wore glasses. According to Justin, John and Dana then entered the home and began heatedly arguing with the men. A fight ensued, after which Tina entered the room and was taken out of the cabin's back door by one of the men.

Based on Justin's descriptions, composite sketches of the two unknown men were produced by Harlan Embry, a man with no artistic ability and no training in forensic sketching. It was never explained why, with access to the Justice Department's and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) top forensic artists, law enforcement chose to use an amateur who sometimes volunteered to help local police. In press releases accompanying the sketches, the suspects were described as in their late 20s to early 30s; one stood between 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) to 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall with dark-blonde hair, and the other between 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m) and 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) with black, greased hair.[25] Both wore gold-framed sunglasses.

Rumors regarding the crimes being ritualistic or motivated by drug trafficking were dismissed by Plumas County sheriff Doug Thomas, who stated in the week following the murders that neither drug paraphernalia nor illegal drugs were found in the home. About 4,000 man-hours were spent working the case, which Thomas described as "frustrating."

Recovery of Tina Sharp's remains-

Tina's disappearance was initially investigated by the FBI as a possible abduction, although it was reported on April 29, 1981, that the FBI had "backed off" the search as the California State Department of Justice was doing an "adequate job" and "made the FBI's presence unnecessary." A grid-pattern search of the area covering a 5-mile (8.0 km) radius around the house was conducted with police canines, but the efforts were fruitless.

On April 22, 1984, a bottle collector discovered the cranium portion of a human skull and part of a mandible at Camp 18 near Feather Falls in neighboring Butte County, roughly 100 miles (160 km) from Keddie. The remains were confirmed by a forensic pathologist to be those of Tina in June 1984. Near the remains, detectives also discovered a blue nylon jacket, a blanket, a pair of Levi Strauss jeans with a missing back pocket and an empty medical-tape dispenser.

Shortly after announcing the discovery, the Butte County sheriff's office received an anonymous call that identified the remains as belonging to Tina, but the call was not documented. A tape containing a recording of the call was found at the bottom of an evidence box at some point after 2013 by a deputy who was assigned to the case.

Subsequent developments-

The house in which the murders occurred was demolished in 2004.

In a 2008 documentary on the murders, Marilyn Smartt claimed that she suspected her husband Martin and his friend John "Bo" Boubede were responsible for the murders. Marilyn claimed that on the evening of April 11, 1981, she had left Martin and Boubede at a local bar around 11:00 p.m. and returned home to sleep. She stated that she had awoken at approximately 2:00 a.m. on April 12 to find the two men burning an unknown item in the wood stove. Additionally, she alleged that Martin "hated Johnny Sharp with a passion." However, in the 2008 documentary, sheriff Doug Thomas said that he had interviewed Martin, who passed a polygraph examination.

According to a 2016 article published by The Sacramento Bee, Martin had left Keddie and driven to Reno, Nevada shortly after the murders. While there, he sent a letter to Marilyn ruminating on personal struggles in their marriage, which he concluded by stating: "I've paid the price of your love & now I've bought it with four people's lives." In a 2016 interview, Gamberg stated that the letter was "overlooked" in the initial investigation and was never admitted as evidence. He later criticized the quality of the initial investigation, saying: "You could take someone just coming out of the academy, and they'd have done a better job." A counselor whom Martin regularly visited also alleged that he had admitted to the murders of Sue and Tina but claimed, "I didn't have anything to do with [the boys]."He allegedly told the counselor that Tina was killed to prevent her from identifying him, as she had "witnessed the whole thing."

Martin Smartt died of cancer in Portland, Oregon in June 2000. Boubede, who allegedly had ties to organized crime in Chicago, died there in 1988.

On March 24, 2016, a hammer matching the description of the one Martin had claimed to have lost was discovered in a local pond and taken into evidence by Plumas County special investigator Mike Gamberg. Plumas County sheriff Hagwood, who was 16 years old at the time of the murders and knew the Sharp family, stated: "the location it was found... It would have been intentionally put there. It would not have been accidentally misplaced." Gamberg also stated that at that time, six potential suspects were being examined.

In April 2018, Gamberg stated that DNA evidence recovered from a piece of tape at the crime scene matched that of a known living suspect.
