The Rise of Wannabe Gang Culture in Saskatoon: A Call for Intervention and Support

Before I even start, fuck it, I will doxx myself and say I live in Saskatoon. Beyond that, I do not fear Death, nor what comes after it at this point in my life, right now I am pissed off about the people that I am forced to be around when I go downtown to conduct my personal business when I ride the bus or even generally exist outside of my own fucking house.

Now, Saskatoon's social landscape faces a growing concern: the proliferation of adolescent behaviour emulating established gang culture. These young people, often identified by stereotypical attire and performative displays of aggression, project an image of rebellion and defiance. However, this outward expression masks a more intricate societal issue and a fundamental misunderstanding of the realities associated with gang affiliation.

The allure of gang membership, particularly for adolescents navigating complex stages of identity formation, is undeniable. These groups offer a distorted sense of belonging, structure, and even a semblance of family. Social media further amplifies this issue by presenting a romanticized portrayal of gang life, replete with wealth, power, and a paradoxical sense of autonomy. This curated online world paints a picture far removed from the harsh realities – violence, rigid hierarchies, and a constant struggle for survival – that define genuine gang structures.

This romanticization not only trivializes the experiences of those genuinely trapped within gang life but also poses a significant threat to these young emulators. Firstly, they disrespect the established code and unwavering loyalty demanded by real gangs. These teenagers, unknowingly advertising potential affiliation through their clothing and forced bravado, risk becoming targets or pawns in a dangerous criminal web. Secondly, their posturing attracts unwanted attention. While Canada may not have gun violence prevalent elsewhere, it is not entirely absent. Engaging in disruptive behaviour or provoking the wrong individual can have tragic consequences.

However, what compels these young people down this path? Often, it stems from a lack of positive role models and a yearning for purpose. These adolescents might grapple with feelings of inadequacy, social isolation, or a lack of control over their lives. Perhaps their home environments lack stability, or they haven't found a healthy outlet for their energy and frustrations.

The solution lies in a multi-pronged approach, focused on providing constructive alternatives and addressing the underlying causes of this behavior. Schools and community centers are crucial platforms for intervention. Structured mentorship programs can connect these young people with positive figures who understand their struggles and can offer guidance and support. These mentors should be individuals they can admire and emulate, figures who embody the values of respect, responsibility, and personal growth.

Extracurricular activities can provide healthy outlets for energy and talent development, fostering a sense of accomplishment and belonging. Investment in youth centers offering robotics clubs, music programs, and athletic teams is crucial. These activities not only nurture talent but also instill teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of competition – all crucial life skills that translate well beyond the specific activity.

Open dialogues facilitated by trusted adults can deconstruct the glamorized image of gang life and expose its brutal reality. Educators, social workers, and even reformed gang members can share their experiences, painting a stark picture of the violence, addiction, and despair that permeates this world.

However, dismantling the myth goes beyond simply highlighting the negatives. It's equally important to showcase the positive alternatives. Mentorship programs can connect these youths with successful professionals and entrepreneurs who come from similar backgrounds. These individuals can serve as living testaments to the power of hard work, education, and dedication – proof that a fulfilling life lies beyond the allure of gang culture.

By fostering critical thinking skills and challenging these distorted narratives, we empower these youths to make informed decisions about their futures. Imagine a curriculum that analyzes media portrayals of gangs, dissecting the elements of fiction and fabrication. Critical thinking skills are fundamental to navigating the complexities of the modern world and empowering these youths to question the narratives they encounter is crucial in steering them away from dangerous choices.

Ultimately, empowering these youths is key. By nurturing their talents, providing safe spaces for identity exploration, and addressing the root causes of their disenfranchisement, we can steer them away from the allure of a dangerous fantasy and onto a path toward a fulfilling life. They may be currently disengaged, but with the right support, they can find their way back and become something far more impressive than a wannabe gangster – they can become contributing members of society, capable of forging their own unique paths to success.

Furthermore, it's crucial to conduct a thorough needs assessment to identify the environmental factors that might be contributing to this trend. Is there a lack of access to after-school programs or recreational facilities in Saskatoon? Are there economic disparities that leave some youth feeling disenfranchised and overlooked? Community leaders and social workers need to work together to create a more positive and inclusive environment for all of Saskatoon's youth.

By simultaneously addressing the immediate issue of wannabe gang culture and the underlying societal causes that contribute to it, we can create a more hopeful future for Saskatoon's Youth.

If you are one of these people in Saskatoon, outside of Saskatoon, or just are in General this type of stupid, know this.

You are already dead, and you just don't know it yet; we have quite literally seen on this website day in and day out what happens when you join a "Gang."

You eventually die because of a bigger fish in the sea, then they snuff your life out without a second thought.

This is not a Threat; this is simply a Fact of the matter: you are going to Die, End up in Jail or worse.

Become someone's Bitch.

It is your life, your choice and all that shit, but if it were me, I would prefer not to get raped by men in prison, on the street, or otherwise.

Do what you want, but when I read that you were murdered in a Police Report, I will not cry for you; I will, in fact, be happy that one less fucking idiot is off this planet.

21 February 2023

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office cleared Officer Kevin Hansen on Friday of any wrongdoing related to the deadly shooting of Herman Lucas in late February.

The incident occurred on Feb. 21, 2023, near 91st and Silver Spring. 31-year-old Lucas died after Officer Hansen shot and killed him during a foot pursuit.

Police attempted to pull Lucas over on the 7000 block of W. Thurston Ave. because the car he was driving was unregistered and did not have any license plates, according to the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD).

Lucas took off and a pursuit began. The pursuit ended when Lucas ran a red light and collided with another driver in the 9100 block of W. Silver Spring Drive, according to MPD.

Lucas then got out of his vehicle and ran away. While running from officers, a firearm can be seen in his hands, according to surveillance video.

Lucas failed to listen to police commands to drop his weapon, police say. While attempting to scale a fence, he fell to the ground. Lucas then turned towards Officer Hansen and the officer fired his gun, striking Lucas multiple times. Hansen discharged his firearm ten times, according to the DA's Office.

Lucas died from his injuries. His weapon, a semi-automatic firearm, was recovered.

Officer Hansen, who had five years of service at the time of the incident, was placed on administrative leave per department protocol.

On Friday, the DA's Office ruled Officer Hansen's use of force was consistent with state law for protecting the community and his own life.

The clearance letter says in part, "Mr. Lucas was armed with a loaded semi-automatic pistol that he brandished in a public place while a uniformed officer was lawfully attempting to arrest him and refused to surrender the weapon or comply with lawful orders. Despite repeated orders to relinquish control of his firearm, Lucas picked up his gun after inadvertently dropping it while colliding with a fence. Lucas posed an immediate threat to the safety of Officer Hansen and anyone else in that vicinity."

MPD previously released edited body camera footage showing parts of the deadly shooting.
