A 17-year-old girl, identified as María Camila Espitia Villalba, Colombian; who had been reported missing, was the victim of a horrendous crime: they murdered her and removed her entrails. It occurred in El Bagre, Department of Antioquia, Colombia.

The young woman was taken to work on a farm with another woman and they disappeared. Then a photo circulated on social networks showing her in captivity, with her hands tied and a little blood on her cheeks. Later a video was shot showing how it was horribly unraveled.

The body of the minor has not yet appeared to give her a Christian burial.

It was also known that the farm is located in a territory where control is disputed between El Clan del Golfo and Los Chaparros, who are some of the criminal gangs of the country.

The case began on June 6, 1996, when Routier called 911 reporting that an intruder had broken into her home in Rowlett, Texas, and attacked her and her two sons, Damon and Devon, while they were sleeping.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found Devon, aged 6, dead at the scene, while Damon, aged 5, died shortly after being transported to the hospital. Routier herself had sustained stab wounds. She told police that an intruder had entered the house and attacked them, but she had survived.

However, the police investigation raised doubts about Routier's account. Evidence suggested the crime scene might have been staged and that Routier's wounds were self-inflicted. The prosecution argued that Routier murdered her sons due to financial stress and a desire to rid herself of responsibilities that interfered with her lifestyle.

In 1997, Darlie Routier was convicted of the murder of her younger son, Damon, and sentenced to death. The case against her was primarily based on the forensic evidence gathered at the scene, as well as the behavior she exhibited in the days following the murders, including a videotape of her spraying silly string at her sons' graves during a birthday commemoration, which the prosecution used to question her character.

Routier has maintained her innocence, and her case has garnered a significant amount of attention and support from those who believe she was wrongfully convicted. The prosecution argued that Darlie Routier murdered her sons due to the family's financial struggles. Despite being a full-time homemaker, her husband Darin, a small business owner, had a relatively high income. In a subsequent interview with Joe Munoz of KXAS Channel 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth, Darin Routier referred to their lifestyle as "living large" just days after the tragic deaths. The family resided in a two-story home in a middle-class neighborhood, drove a mid-sized SUV, and owned a used Jaguar automobile and a used boat.

According to the prosecutors, Darlie Routier was portrayed as a pampered and materialistic woman facing substantial debt, declining credit ratings, and limited funds in the bank. Allegedly fearing the imminent end of her middle-class lifestyle, she was accused of resorting to the drastic measure of murdering her sons.

The appellant was convicted of the capital murder of a child under six years of age.  Tex. Penal Code § 19.03(a)(8).   Pursuant to the jury's answers to the special issues set forth in Texas Code of Criminal Procedure article 37.071, sections 2(b) and 2(e), the trial judge sentenced appellant to death.  Tex.Code Crim. Proc. art. 37.071, § 2(g).  Direct appeal to this Court is automatic.  Tex.Code Crim. Proc. art. 37.071, § 2(h).  The appellant raises fourteen points of error.   We shall affirm.

The evidence that supports the verdict shows that the appellant stabbed and killed her two sons, Damon and Devon,1 while her husband and infant son were asleep upstairs in the house.   The appellant does not challenge the legal or factual sufficiency of the evidence to support her conviction, and therefore, it is not necessary to set out the evidence in detail.

I. Claims Regarding the Record

In her brief, the appellant makes several claims regarding the preparation and certification of the reporter's record in addition to claims regarding her trial.   We will address claims dealing with the accuracy of the record before dealing with the appellant's claims regarding her trial.   Specifically, the appellant complains that she is entitled to a new trial because of problems with the reporter's record.   She argues that, at a minimum, she is entitled to a hearing before the record can be used to decide her appeal.   A review of the facts pertaining to these points of error is necessary.

The appellant's trial took place in January 1997.   The certified court reporter, Sandra Halsey, took stenographic notes during the trial.   Halsey simultaneously typed notes of the proceedings onto paper strips (“notes”) and onto computer edit disks (“disks”) that automatically translated the stenographic symbols into English.   In April 1998, under an order of contempt issued by this Court the month before,2 Halsey prepared, certified, and filed the original reporter's record in the case (“Halsey record”).

In a motion to correct and clarify Halsey's record, filed October 13, 1998, the appellant raised the first dispute about the accuracy of the record.   An excerpt of the record that had been read to the jury did not match the corresponding portion of the Halsey record.   Also, counsel noted discrepancies about who was present during the trial and when.   The next day this Court granted the appellant's motion and ordered Halsey to prepare, certify, and file a supplemental reporter's record containing any omitted items.   We also ordered the trial court 3 to resolve any dispute raised in the appellant's motion and to ensure that the reporter's record conformed to what occurred at trial.

The trial court conducted a hearing and decided that the entire record had to be reviewed to comply with this Court's October 14, 1998 order.   In a hearing held October 30, 1998, pursuant to our order, Halsey testified that she made audiotape recordings (“tapes”) in addition to the notes and disks during the trial.   Halsey claimed that the audiotape recorder worked during only the voir dire portion of the trial.   The trial court ordered Halsey to produce her notes, disks, and tapes from the trial.   The trial court also ordered her to conduct a review of the record and make note of any problems she found or corrections she made.

At a hearing held on November 4, 1998, the trial court appointed three certified court reporters, Tommy Mullins, Judy Miller, and Jerry Calloway (“the experts”), to perform a review and to compare the notes and disks to Halsey's record to determine whether Halsey's record could be certified.

Although Halsey had told the trial court and the experts that she possessed no tapes from the guilt and punishment phases of the trial, on November 12, 1998, she told prosecutor Lindsey Roberts and appellant's counsel Stephen Cooper that tapes from those phases of the trial did exist.   According to a stipulation read into the record, she went with Roberts to retrieve the tapes from a storage facility in Plano.   Halsey told Roberts that the tapes she produced were from the Routier trial.   These tapes were produced during the hearing in the trial court on November 13, 1998.   The appellant expressed concern about the authenticity of the tapes.   The trial court received the tapes with the understanding that the question of their authenticity would be subject to further review.

Also during the hearing on November 13, the experts testified that they performed their review by comparing a total of twelve random pages from four of the ten volumes of Halsey's record of the trial with the corresponding notes and disks.   On each of the four pages, the experts found several differences between what was in the notes and what was on the pages from the record.   They concluded that the only way to account for so many differences between the notes and Halsey's record is that someone listened to tapes from the trial and made changes based on the tapes.4

Halsey's daughter and transcription scopist,5 Suzy Crowley, testified that Halsey gave her tapes of the guilt and punishment phases of trial.   Crowley stated that she used the tapes to make permanent changes to the English translation of the original proceedings on the disks.   She testified that the tapes presented by Roberts looked similar to the ones she had used and that they had labels on them that identified them as being from the Routier trial.   Scopist Michelle Reynolds reviewed and edited the voir dire portion of the trial.

Halsey did not testify at the hearing on November 13, 1998.   The trial court appointed counsel for her.   At the conclusion of the hearing, the trial court rescinded its prior order of October 30, 1998, to have Halsey review her record and ordered her to cease any proceedings regarding the record.   The trial court said it would appoint a certified reporter, agreeable to both the State and the appellant, to review Halsey's record and determine whether it could be made to conform to what occurred at trial.

On November 19, 1998, the trial court appointed Susan Simmons, a certified court reporter for the United States District Court in Tyler, to perform a review of the guilt and punishment phases of the record, as well as the pretrial hearings.6  The parties and the experts all agreed that Simmons was qualified and competent to perform the review.   During the hearing, the appellant's counsel explained that he was not sure if it was legally permissible or even possible to certify the record.   He reserved the right to offer evidence on this point at a later time.   Halsey appeared with her attorney that day.   To comply with a subpoena duces tecum requesting all materials regarding the appellant's trial, her attorney turned over the notes and disks for the entire trial.   Halsey refused to testify, however, and asserted her Fifth Amendment privilege.

On December 9, 1998, Halsey's attorney produced twelve more tapes, which he claimed were additional tapes from the trial.   Halsey was then relieved of her duties as the official court reporter in this case.   The trial court ordered Halsey to continue to look for more tapes.

On April 1, 1999, the trial court conducted a hearing during which Simmons testified that she had revised the Halsey record of the guilt and punishment phases of the appellant's trial.   Simmons submitted the revised record (“Simmons record”) and her red-lined copy of the Halsey record that reflected all of the changes that she had made.   Counsel for the appellant and the State were not permitted to question Simmons directly.7  Before the hearing, the trial court provided to the parties the questions it would ask Simmons.   The parties were permitted to submit written questions to the trial court, and the trial court read the questions that it concluded were relevant and not repetitive.   The trial court instructed the parties not to object to questions during the testimony;  they were directed to submit those objections before the next hearing.   The trial court stated that it would also afford the parties an opportunity to submit a bill of exceptions.   The parties were given a break during the testimony to submit further questions based on the testimony that had already been heard.

Simmons testified about the standard procedures for preparing a record of proceedings.   First, during the proceedings, the certified court reporter writes on a machine notes of what occurs.   The notes include a list of the people who are present, the date of the proceedings, the name of the proceedings, the testimony taken, and the list of exhibits.   The machine simultaneously prints the symbols onto the notes and records the symbols onto a disk or hard drive.   The symbols on the notes cannot be read or deciphered by someone without some training as a court reporter or scopist.   The notes are labeled with the date and subject matter.   It is common for the court reporter to use an audiotape recorder as a backup.   Generally, the recorder is connected to the microphones on the witness stand, the attorneys' tables, and the judge's bench.

Simmons testified that after the proceedings are over, the court reporter takes the disk to a computer and uses software, to which the reporter's personal dictionary has been added.   The dictionary in the software produces an English translation of the symbols.   The computer produces a split screen on the monitor, which shows the symbols on one side and the English translation on the other side.   The English translation will show some “untranslates,” which are symbols that the software does not recognize.   After the reporter enters the correct word, the symbol for the word and its translation are added to the reporter's personal dictionary.

According to Simmons's testimony, if the reporter uses a scopist, and most do, the translation is put on a duplicate disk, which is given to a scopist along with the backup tapes.   The scopist performs the first edit.   Ordinarily, the scopist loads the disk and listens to the tapes going line-by-line checking for corrections and unrecognized words.   Then this edited version is saved on another disk to leave intact the original English translation that was produced at trial,8 and all the materials are returned to the reporter.

Simmons indicated that the reporter, after receiving the materials from the scopist, proofreads either the hard copy of the new translation or the on-screen copy while listening to the tapes.   Then the reporter proofreads the record one more time, checks for spelling errors, and prints and certifies the record.

Simmons testified about her work in the appellant's case.   She explained that she followed the instructions in the trial court's order.   The trial court had not ordered Simmons to certify the record;  she was ordered to review the record from the guilt and punishment phases of the trial and to certify it if possible.   She possessed the Halsey record, the disks, tapes, notes, and some handwritten notations by Halsey.   She followed the procedure that is ordinarily employed when a court reporter is unable to produce the record because of either death or disability.

Simmons testified that she first went through the notes and the tapes to be sure that she had them for each volume of the Halsey record she had been assigned.   She said that it appeared that she had been provided with a complete set of materials for the guilt and punishment phases of the trial.   She said it was possible to create a certifiable record based on the materials provided.   The notes prepared on the machine appeared to be complete with no gaps in the proceedings and within the range of competent reporting.   The disks were in useable form and appeared to be complete.   The tapes were audible and seemed to be complete with no discernible gaps or alterations.

Simmons testified that she started the review process by listening to the tapes while going through the Halsey record line-by-line.   She marked the corrections onto her copy of the Halsey record.   When she had questions, she flipped to the appropriate portion of the notes.   She did not perform a systematic review of the notes.   She was able to identify witnesses when they stated their names at the beginning of their testimony.   If a voice was not identified in this manner, she used the notes, which contained symbols identifying the speakers.

Simmons then took the marked version of the Halsey record and the disks to her scopist.   The scopist copied each disk onto her hard drive.   Then she made the changes marked in pen and saved the files on new disks so that there would be no alteration of the disks provided by Halsey.   The scopist printed a hard copy of the changes.   Simmons proofread the hard-copy by doing a page-by-page comparison of the changes.

This procedure was followed until all of the volumes for the guilt and punishment phases were completed.   Then Simmons prepared a master index, exhibit index, and witness index, which was compared to the scopist's list.   Three hard copies of the final edited version (“Simmons record”) were produced along with disks with a universal translation.9

Simmons testified that she believed that Halsey used more than one scopist to create the record.   It is standard practice for the reporter who actually heard the trial to review the changes a scopist makes using the tapes.   It is normal for the final record to be different in some respects from the unedited notes.   The purpose of editing the notes is to make them reflect, as nearly as possible, what happened at trial.   Simmons said that the Halsey record was inaccurate and poorly prepared.   She opined that the deficiencies in the Halsey record were based on a lack of proper editing.   Simmons did not attend any of the proceedings in Kerrville and had no personal knowledge of what happened at trial.   But Simmons testified that she believed, based on the materials provided and her expertise, she was able to render a complete and accurate record that conforms to what occurred at trial.   She said that, if the materials did not contain a complete and accurate account of the proceedings, then the Simmons record could suffer from the same flaws.   But she believed that the materials provided accurate information for preparing the record.   Simmons has reconstructed trial records in other cases, and she was able to certify records in those cases.   In her expert opinion, the record as prepared by her had been made to conform to what happened at trial to ninety-five percent accuracy.

On April 26, 1999, the Court of Criminal Appeals ordered the trial court to ensure that the entire record, including voir dire and pretrial proceedings, conformed to what happened at trial.   We ordered the trial court to independently review other parts of the record in the same manner as it had the guilt and punishment phases.   On May 4, 1999, the trial court appointed Simmons and her scopist to prepare the remaining portions of the record.

On October 14, 1999, a hearing was held to receive the remaining portions of the record that Simmons had completed.   She testified that the tapes were audible and seemed to have no gaps or alterations, the disks for the volumes-other than Volume 16-were useable, and the notes-although there were mistakes-could be used to the extent she needed them.   She testified that, once again, she was able to certify that the record conformed to what occurred at trial.   She testified that she used the same procedures used to complete the guilt and punishment phases of the record, with one exception.   For Volume 16, there was no disk.   Therefore, Simmons proofread the hard copy of the Halsey record with the tapes and had her scopist retype the entire volume.

Later, the parties and the trial court became aware that Volumes 10 and 11 had not been sent to Simmons for preparation.   The materials were then sent to Simmons, and she was ordered to review the materials in the same manner as she had reviewed the other portions of the trial.   The trial court ordered Simmons to revise and certify a record if possible.10

At a hearing on January 28, 2000, Simmons testified that she followed the same procedure for preparing and certifying the record, except for the first 54 pages of Volume 10.11  These pages contained the proceedings for October 21, 1996.   For those 54 pages, Simmons had the Halsey record, the notes, and the disk, but no tape.   Going line-by-line, she compared the Halsey record with the notes taken on the day the proceedings occurred.   She noted that there did not appear to be any gaps in the notes and that they were in good and useable form.   Simmons refused to certify these pages, however.   She explained that, based on the portions of the record she had prepared already and the state of the Halsey record, she was not comfortable certifying the first 54 pages without a tape to compare to the Halsey record.   She said that her record for the first 54 pages of Volume 10 is an accurate transcription of Halsey's notes.   Her decision not to certify was based on the following facts:  she was not present at trial;  she had no tape to use as a backup;  and her review of the rest of the record indicated that she needed a tape to correct the record because it had been edited so poorly.

Simmons testified that on the tape for the afternoon session of court on October 21, 1996, in a conversation between Halsey and someone from the Sheriff's Department, Halsey mentioned that she needed some batteries.12  Simmons believed that this might explain the absence of a tape for the morning session.   Simmons believed, however, that a tape existed for the morning session because there were words that appeared in the Halsey record that did not appear in the notes.   At the conclusion of the hearing, the trial court announced that it would give the parties 120 days in which to review the entire record and make objections.

On February 9, 2000, the trial court issued an order stating that Volumes 10 and 11 of the Simmons record should replace the same volumes of the Halsey record because the Halsey record did not conform to what occurred at trial.   The Court, by agreement of the parties, gave the parties until March 6, 2000, to file objections to the Simmons record.

On March 2, 2000, the appellant filed written objections to the Simmons record and a written request for a hearing to resolve factual disputes about the record.   The State's response to the appellant's written objections was filed April 28, 2000.   On September 1, 2000, the trial court scheduled a hearing on the appellant's objections to the record to take place on September 8, 2000.   The appellant's attorney subpoenaed several witnesses, including Judy Miller, Mary Docklar, Jerry Calloway, Doug Mulder, Jeff Crilley, Lindsey Roberts, Toby Shook, and Greg Davis.

On September 7, 2000, the trial court issued findings on the record and an order cancelling the hearing scheduled for the next day.   The findings say that the trial court reviewed the orders issued by the Court of Criminal Appeals, the record from all hearings held to comply with the orders issued by the Court of Criminal Appeals, the findings and orders of the trial court, the appellant's objections to the record, and the State's response.   The trial court found that the appellant's objections were clear and concise and would apprise the Court of Criminal Appeals of the appellant's concerns about the record.   It found that the appellant's motions to suppress evidence in the proceedings on the record were beyond the scope of the orders of the Court of Criminal Appeals.   It also found that an evidentiary hearing as requested by the appellant was not necessary to comply with the orders of the Court of Criminal Appeals, the orders had been complied with, and that it would not hold any other hearings unless the Court of Criminal Appeals so ordered.

In response to the trial court's order cancelling the hearing, the appellant filed her Formal Bill of Exception No. 1 and a Motion for a Hearing to Make an Offer of Proof on September 25, 2000.

The trial court responded with a finding that it no longer had jurisdiction of the case.   The court forwarded the appellant's pleadings to the Court of Criminal Appeals without taking action.

The appellant was convicted of the capital murder of a child under six years of age.  Tex. Penal Code § 19.03(a)(8).   Pursuant to the jury's answers to the special issues set forth in Texas Code of Criminal Procedure article 37.071, sections 2(b) and 2(e), the trial judge sentenced appellant to death.  Tex.Code Crim. Proc. art. 37.071, § 2(g).  Direct appeal to this Court is automatic.  Tex.Code Crim. Proc. art. 37.071, § 2(h).  The appellant raises fourteen points of error.   We shall affirm.

The evidence that supports the verdict shows that the appellant stabbed and killed her two sons, Damon and Devon,1 while her husband and infant son were asleep upstairs in the house.   The appellant does not challenge the legal or factual sufficiency of the evidence to support her conviction, and therefore, it is not necessary to set out the evidence in detail.

I. Claims Regarding the Record

In her brief, the appellant makes several claims regarding the preparation and certification of the reporter's record in addition to claims regarding her trial.   We will address claims dealing with the accuracy of the record before dealing with the appellant's claims regarding her trial.   Specifically, the appellant complains that she is entitled to a new trial because of problems with the reporter's record.   She argues that, at a minimum, she is entitled to a hearing before the record can be used to decide her appeal.   A review of the facts pertaining to these points of error is necessary.

The appellant's trial took place in January 1997.   The certified court reporter, Sandra Halsey, took stenographic notes during the trial.   Halsey simultaneously typed notes of the proceedings onto paper strips (“notes”) and onto computer edit disks (“disks”) that automatically translated the stenographic symbols into English.   In April 1998, under an order of contempt issued by this Court the month before,2 Halsey prepared, certified, and filed the original reporter's record in the case (“Halsey record”).

In a motion to correct and clarify Halsey's record, filed October 13, 1998, the appellant raised the first dispute about the accuracy of the record.   An excerpt of the record that had been read to the jury did not match the corresponding portion of the Halsey record.   Also, counsel noted discrepancies about who was present during the trial and when.   The next day this Court granted the appellant's motion and ordered Halsey to prepare, certify, and file a supplemental reporter's record containing any omitted items.   We also ordered the trial court 3 to resolve any dispute raised in the appellant's motion and to ensure that the reporter's record conformed to what occurred at trial.

The trial court conducted a hearing and decided that the entire record had to be reviewed to comply with this Court's October 14, 1998 order.   In a hearing held October 30, 1998, pursuant to our order, Halsey testified that she made audiotape recordings (“tapes”) in addition to the notes and disks during the trial.   Halsey claimed that the audiotape recorder worked during only the voir dire portion of the trial.   The trial court ordered Halsey to produce her notes, disks, and tapes from the trial.   The trial court also ordered her to conduct a review of the record and make note of any problems she found or corrections she made.

At a hearing held on November 4, 1998, the trial court appointed three certified court reporters, Tommy Mullins, Judy Miller, and Jerry Calloway (“the experts”), to perform a review and to compare the notes and disks to Halsey's record to determine whether Halsey's record could be certified.

Although Halsey had told the trial court and the experts that she possessed no tapes from the guilt and punishment phases of the trial, on November 12, 1998, she told prosecutor Lindsey Roberts and appellant's counsel Stephen Cooper that tapes from those phases of the trial did exist.   According to a stipulation read into the record, she went with Roberts to retrieve the tapes from a storage facility in Plano.   Halsey told Roberts that the tapes she produced were from the Routier trial.   These tapes were produced during the hearing in the trial court on November 13, 1998.   The appellant expressed concern about the authenticity of the tapes.   The trial court received the tapes with the understanding that the question of their authenticity would be subject to further review.

Also during the hearing on November 13, the experts testified that they performed their review by comparing a total of twelve random pages from four of the ten volumes of Halsey's record of the trial with the corresponding notes and disks.   On each of the four pages, the experts found several differences between what was in the notes and what was on the pages from the record.   They concluded that the only way to account for so many differences between the notes and Halsey's record is that someone listened to tapes from the trial and made changes based on the tapes.4

Simmons testified that on the tape for the afternoon session of court on October 21, 1996, in a conversation between Halsey and someone from the Sheriff's Department, Halsey mentioned that she needed some batteries.12  Simmons believed that this might explain the absence of a tape for the morning session.   Simmons believed, however, that a tape existed for the morning session because there were words that appeared in the Halsey record that did not appear in the notes.   At the conclusion of the hearing, the trial court announced that it would give the parties 120 days in which to review the entire record and make objections.

On February 9, 2000, the trial court issued an order stating that Volumes 10 and 11 of the Simmons record should replace the same volumes of the Halsey record because the Halsey record did not conform to what occurred at trial.   The Court, by agreement of the parties, gave the parties until March 6, 2000, to file objections to the Simmons record.

On March 2, 2000, the appellant filed written objections to the Simmons record and a written request for a hearing to resolve factual disputes about the record.   The State's response to the appellant's written objections was filed April 28, 2000.   On September 1, 2000, the trial court scheduled a hearing on the appellant's objections to the record to take place on September 8, 2000.   The appellant's attorney subpoenaed several witnesses, including Judy Miller, Mary Docklar, Jerry Calloway, Doug Mulder, Jeff Crilley, Lindsey Roberts, Toby Shook, and Greg Davis.

On September 7, 2000, the trial court issued findings on the record and an order cancelling the hearing scheduled for the next day.   The findings say that the trial court reviewed the orders issued by the Court of Criminal Appeals, the record from all hearings held to comply with the orders issued by the Court of Criminal Appeals, the findings and orders of the trial court, the appellant's objections to the record, and the State's response.   The trial court found that the appellant's objections were clear and concise and would apprise the Court of Criminal Appeals of the appellant's concerns about the record.   It found that the appellant's motions to suppress evidence in the proceedings on the record were beyond the scope of the orders of the Court of Criminal Appeals.   It also found that an evidentiary hearing as requested by the appellant was not necessary to comply with the orders of the Court of Criminal Appeals, the orders had been complied with, and that it would not hold any other hearings unless the Court of Criminal Appeals so ordered.

In response to the trial court's order cancelling the hearing, the appellant filed her Formal Bill of Exception No. 1 and a Motion for a Hearing to Make an Offer of Proof on September 25, 2000.

The trial court responded with a finding that it no longer had jurisdiction of the case.   The court forwarded the appellant's pleadings to the Court of Criminal Appeals without taking action.

Routier was ultimately convicted of murdering the younger of her two sons, and was sentenced to death by lethal injection. Prosecutors did not try Routier for the death of her older son, holding his murder in reserve in the event she was acquitted in the first murder trial or her conviction was overturned on appeal, as there is no statute of limitations on any murder charge in Texas. Routier's defense attorney, Douglas Mulder, was the prosecutor responsible for the wrongful conviction and subsequent death penalty (both since overturned) of Randall Adams in 1977. Two 16yo Japanese highschool girls, one of them allegedly pregnant, have livestreamed their suicide on 12th of April 2023.

The suicide is said to be related to love affairs where the girls have failed to win the heart of their "senpai" who is a famous Japanese cosplay livestreamer.

Autopsy efforts are on the way to find out the father of the child which died with the 16yo young mother.

A news was reported that a young couple committed suicide by hanging themselves at a Tangalle hotel yesterday (23rd). The police say that the way this young couple committed suicide was recorded on a nearby CCTV camera.

Also, it has been revealed that the death of the young couple was a suicide from the post-mortem investigations conducted in this incident. It is stated that the dead young man is 22 years old and the girl is 17 years old.

It is said that there was a love relationship between this young couple and they had stayed in the hotel room the night before. It is reported that a letter written before death was found in the room.

The CCTV footage that was filmed by the police officers was then shared on WhatsApp with other police officers before being released into the public sphere.

And there was also a second video that was filmed either by a medic or fireman at the Public Assistance – Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP) that shows the bollard being extracted from the man's body.

It shows the critically injured man lying naked with a cardiac message machine in action on his chest and surrounded by three caregivers in green codes and a firefighter and a white vest as they remove the side of the pole from the man's body.

A man's voice can be heard saying “Oh misery! Oh, the cow! Oh, fuck! Ah! But what a horror! What a horror,” which is cleanup genuine sentiment as he then chuckles, before adding with a sneer: “It's good, saved, so!”

The AP-HP confirmed that the video had been shot in one of its facilities, apparently at the Beaujon hospital in Clichy.

They confirmed that the footage is genuine, although not something that happened recently as some Spanish media have been reporting.

French officials also ordered an enquiry to work out how images of the man ended up being shed by police and also how they were shot at the hospital.

The usual story presumably correct reported that the man had jumped on September 27 and was alive as firefighters, medics and police fought to save his life. He died after being removed from the pole one hour after he was delivered to the hospital.

Lawyer Tewfik Bouzenoune for the family of the man who died, aged 26, said it was a disgusting invasion of his privacy and demanded maximum punishments for the police officers and hospital officials responsible for releasing the two videos.

On December 7, 2017, 21-year-old William Atchison committed a mass shooting at his former high school, killing 2 & himself.

Both were student athletes at Aztec High School. Marquez was a cheerleader, and Fernandez, a recent transfer to the school, was an American football player.

William Edward Atchison (also known by his uncreative aliases AlGore, Vance Stone, FuckYou, MrApophis) aged 21 3/18/1996-12/7/2017

William was a gas station employee and YouTuber.

Atchison was a former student of Aztec High School. On August 20 2012, Atchison dropped out after getting suspended earlier that year. His suspension came after he used a classroom whiteboard to "memorialize" the Columbine High School shooting.

Prior to December 7 2017, Atchison was a member of the Columbine High School Massacre Discussion Forum and an admin on Encyclopedia Dramatica. He also would commonly edit Wikipedia articles on mass shootings and the perpetrators. On Encyclopedia Dramatica he would also create articles on mass shooters and would regularly edit the "High Score" page, which was a leaderboard for mass shooters and their kill count.

The shooting

At approximately 8:00 a.m., Atchison entered Aztec High School disguised as a student. He carried a backpack containing a 9mm Glock 19 Gen4 semi-automatic pistol.

Atchison opened fire in the upper level hallway of the 800-900 student occupied building.

The school custodian, Thomas "Emery" Hill, chased after Atchison, shouting, "active shooter," "lock down!" Katie Potter, a 74-year-old substitute teacher, heard the gunshots and the following loudspeaker announcement calling for a lock-down. As a substitute teacher, Ms. Potter did not have keys to the classroom, so she ushered her 17 students into the classroom office, and barricaded the door with a couch. Atchison fired multiple rounds through the office wall, as he heard police coming closer he fatally shot himself.

Atchison's body displayed several neo-Nazi symbols and words on his skin. These symbols included a swastika, SS runes, and the acronym "AMOG" (manosphere slang for "Alpha Male of Group") on his upper thigh. The phrase "BUILD WALL" appeared above his left knee, and "your home" on the right of his groin. Atchison's toxicology report revealed that no drugs or alcohol were present in his body on the day of the shooting.

Atchison had no previous criminal record; however, he was investigated by the FBI in March 2016, due to his online posts indicating his interest in purchasing weapons for a mass shooting. He came to the attention of the FBI when he asked on an internet forum "where to find cheap assault rifles for a mass shooting." Atchison told FBI investigators that he was simply "trolling" , and the investigation was subsequently closed when it was determined that, other than an airsoft pellet gun, Atchison did not own a firearm at the time.

Planning and preparation

In November 2017, Atchison traveled to Sportsman's Warehouse in Farmington, where he legally purchased a 9mm Glock 19 Gen4 semi-automatic pistol that he would later use in the December attack on the school. Several weeks before the attack, Atchison visited Aztec High School to do surveillance. He was escorted around the school and given a tour. Atchison's father later told police that his son played a video game that allowed him to simulate a practice run of the school shooting.

A new 9mm Glock costs at least $400 and probably more like $550. That's half a grand that Atchison could have used to improve his life. Some IT studies to bolster his résumé? A second-hand car, to widen his job prospects? He gave up completely on trying to have a meaningful life.

Kelly Ronahan quickly became an internet star by documenting her story online. However as time went on fans became suspicious of the reality of Kelly’s situation. 

At the beginning of 2019 her legs were alright and by May 2021 she got her legs amputated

2014-2016: Blood transfusions and undiagnosed condition

In 2014 Kelly became an Instagram star. She needed weekly blood transfusions to manage a rare blood disease. Kelly’s hemoglobin count took a nosedive and doctors couldn’t figure out why.

By March 2016, she had received a whopping 95 liters of blood from over 55 generous donors.

However, she continued to deteriorate. Her story garnered sympathy from netizens, who showered her with support. Ronahan joined a blood donation organization to motivate people to donate blood.

At various points, she attributed her condition to multiple sclerosis and uterine fibroids, though evidence was scarce.

2016: Seizures and hospitalizations

In July 2016, Ronahan was admitted to hospitals for seizures. However, doctors discharged her after discovering that she was faking them.

Despite these revelations, she continued to receive blood drives and an outpouring of support from her followers. Throughout 2016, people organized several blood drives in her name.

2017: Inflammation, sepsis, and eating disorders

In early 2017, Kelly’s port became infected, leading to sepsis. Ronahan also informed her followers that she’d been suffering from eating disorders. She also claimed to have harmed herself before she got sick, but the scars didn't seem to be 3 years old.

Shortly before her planned discharge, Kelly developed seizures and a rash. In April 2017, Kelly went to the hospital for a different reason and had her blood drawn. 

Tests revealed that her hemoglobin count was normal, sparking speculation that she’d been faking a rare condition for attention. Kelly refuted the speculation by accusing the doctor of scheming against her. 

By 2018, rumors that Kelly was faking it had really gained traction.

In April 2018, doctors removed her port because she didn’t need transfusions anymore. 

2018-2019: Leg issues and autoimmune disease diagnosis

Ronahan’s mysterious leg condition appeared in 2018 and spread rapidly in the coming months. 

A month later, Kelly’s reported swelling on her feet and blisters that allegedly appeared out of nowhere. The blisters got bigger as Kelly impulsively picked on them. She claimed to be in so much pain that she needed pain meds, but doctors refused to prescribe the medication. 

Kelly’s condition got worse as 2018 progressed: the scabs turned into much larger wounds. The medical mystery got more complicated when Ronahan suffered seizures and developed blisters on her hands. 

Eventually, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2019 and underwent skin grafts in the hope of a better future. Several weeks later, Kelly returned to the hospital after picking the wounds on her legs.

Today, just 1 hour ago, there was a shooting at the Faculty of Arts Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. The shooter has been identified as David Kozàk, his identity card photo seen below:

Kozàk shot and killed his own father before the shooting. Here's a rough timeline of how things happened.

12:20 - the police recieved a call that the shooter has left his home in Hostoň (Kladno district) and shared an intention to commit suicide.

12:45 - the police find the body of the shooters dead father at home with his own rifle.

The police try to track the shooter down, finding out he is a student of the Faculty of Philosophy in Carlos University and had a class there at 14:00.

The police evacuate the bulding he has the class in, finishing at 14:22.

14:59 - the police is informed that shots have been fired at a different building of the Faculty of Arts & Philosophy.

15:20 - the shooter was found dead at the balcony of the building.

Kozàk is allegedly also responsible for the murder of a father and their infant baby in the Klánovice forest, just a week before the shooting. For now, 10 people were killed and 30 people were injured, with 5 of them in serious condition. The victim count has reached 14 dead and 25 injured now. Several bikes were riding at insane speed on the Bursa-Istanbul road. The camera recorded the speed up to 298km/h before the crashing happen.

• On April 4th, 1988, Berdella was apprehended after a victim, whom he had subjected to a week of torment, bravely leapt naked from the second floor of his residence to escape. By then, he had already abducted and subjected at least six young men to unspeakable horrors, leading the Kansas City Police Department to suspect his involvement in two additional disappearances. Berdella meticulously documented his sadistic acts in torture logs and amassed a significant collection of Polaroid photographs depicting his victims. Regrettably, the bodies were never located and remained in the landfill.

First Victim ; Jerry Howell:

There are no images of him dead , or suffering.

Description:

On July 5, 1984, at the age of 19, Berdella is believed to have claimed his first victim, Jerry Howell. Berdella had initially promised to drive Howell to a dancing contest in Merriam. According to Berdella's account, he supplied Howell with alcohol, diazepam, and acepromazine both in his car and at his residence until Howell lost consciousness. He then administered a potent tranquilizer and secured Howell to his bed.

Howell remained confined to Berdella's bed for approximately 28 hours. During this harrowing captivity, Berdella subjected Howell to a cycle of drugging, torment, sexual assault, and the use of foreign objects, persistently disregarding Howell's inquiries about the reasons for his brutal treatment and his pleas for release. According to Berdella, Jerry met his end either through asphyxiation from his own vomit or due to the combined effects of the gag and medications, rendering it impossible for him to breathe.

Subsequently, Berdella claimed to have made a brief attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation after Howell's passing, before relocating the body to the basement. There, he suspended Howell's remains above a large cooking pot and made incisions to his inner elbows and jugular vein, allowing the blood to drain overnight. The following day, he dismembered Howell's body with the use of a chainsaw and boning knives, then wrapped the sections in newspaper and placed them in trash bags. These bags were then deposited into larger ones for disposal by a waste disposal crew at a landfill site.

When questioned by authorities investigating Howell's disappearance, Berdella maintained that he had indeed taken Howell to Merriam as promised, asserting that they had parted ways near Howell's intended destination and he hadn't seen him since.

As with all of Berdella's subsequent murders, he meticulously recorded each instance of sexual and physical torture inflicted upon his victim in a detailed log. Berdella recollected that, like his later victims, Howell had repeatedly implored him to cease the abuse and torment. However, Berdella responded by either ignoring these pleas, mocking his victim, or issuing threats. He insisted to investigators that his actions were not driven by personal gratification but rather by what he termed his "physical and mental satisfaction."

Description:

On April 10, 1985, Robert Sheldon, a 20-year-old former lodger passing through, approached Berdella seeking temporary shelter. Although Sheldon paid rent punctually, Berdella viewed him as an inconvenience. Despite lacking any physical attraction to Sheldon, Berdella drugged and imprisoned him on April 12, after finding him in an intoxicated state upon returning from work. Berdella maintained that he harbored no deep-seated malice towards Sheldon, but rather saw him as an outlet for his pent-up anger and frustration towards others.

Over the course of three days, Sheldon was subjected to a series of tortures including the application of drain cleaner to his left eye, the insertion of needles under his fingertips, the binding of his wrists with piano wire aimed at causing permanent nerve damage, and the filling of his ears with caulking to impair his hearing.

On April 15, three days into Sheldon's captivity, a workman arrived for scheduled roof repairs, prompting Berdella to end Sheldon's life by suffocating him with a sack and tightening it with a rope. Later, Berdella dissected Sheldon's body in the third-floor bathroom.

Third Victim ; Mark Wallace:

Description:

In June, Berdella encountered Mark Wallace, whom he vaguely knew from previous yard work assistance. Wallace sought refuge in Berdella's tool shed during a severe thunderstorm. As with Sheldon, Berdella invited him inside. Observing Wallace's heightened distress and despondency, Berdella offered to administer chlorpromazine, explaining it would help him "calm down and relax." Wallace agreed, and 30 minutes later, Berdella decided to hold him captive.

Wallace was taken to the second-floor bedroom, enduring nearly a day of captivity and torture, including the use of alligator clips on his nipples to administer electric shocks whenever he showed signs of losing consciousness. According to Berdella, approximately an hour after "experimenting" with hypodermic needles by inserting them into various muscles on Wallace's back, Mark Wallace succumbed to a combination of "the drugs, the gag, and the lack of oxygen." Berdella recorded his time of death as 7:00 p.m. on June 23.

Fourth Victim ; James Ferris (This is where it starts to get interesting ):

On September 26, 1985, Berdella received a call from an acquaintance named James Ferris, who requested a short-term stay at Berdella's residence. Agreeing, Berdella had ulterior motives of abducting Ferris, arranging to meet him at a bar later that evening. Despite the severity of his actions towards his first three victims, Berdella asserted that Ferris was the first individual he deliberately subjected to torture. He also disclosed to investigators that during the captivity of his final three victims, there were moments when he refrained from recording further details in his abuse log, assuming the victim might not "endure much longer."

After bringing Ferris home, Berdella drugged him with crushed tranquilizers hidden in a meal, then bound him to the bed, subjecting him to nearly continuous torture for around 27 hours. The torment included the repeated application of 7,700-volt electrical shocks to the shoulders and testicles, lasting up to five minutes each time, as well as acupuncture using hypodermic needles on the neck and genital area. Ferris gradually descended into delirium, yet Berdella persisted in his physical and sexual assaults. In his log, Berdella eventually noted that Ferris was "Unable to sit up for more than 10–15 seconds." The subsequent entry recorded "Very delayed breathing," concluding with Berdella's grim note that Ferris had passed away, using a term from his previous career as a chef: "86," which Berdella later explained meant anything from 'Throw it out' to 'Stop the project'.

Fifth Victim ; Todd Stoops:

Description:

Todd Stoops was a 23-year-old individual struggling with drug addiction and occasionally engaged in sex work. He, along with his wife, had briefly stayed at Berdella's house twice in 1984. After their second departure from Berdella's residence, Stoops was not encountered again until a serendipitous meeting at Kansas City's Liberty Memorial Park on June 17, 1986. Berdella extended an invitation to his home, offering lunch and an additional proposition of sex, as Stoops mentioned he needed $13 for drugs (equivalent to about $35 as of 2023).

Berdella later emphasized to investigators that he had a strong physical attraction to Stoops, and this victim was kept captive for a period of two weeks before his demise. Berdella systematically heightened Stoops' terror, aiming to mold him into a compliant and incapacitated sexual captive. He resorted to administering electrical shocks through Stoops' closed eyes in an attempt to blind him, and introduced drain cleaner into his larynx in a futile effort to stifle his screams.

In the second week of his captivity, Stoops, longing for a soft drink and sandwich, was met with a refusal from Berdella, prompting him to break into tears. On June 27, Berdella inflicted severe internal damage on Stoops by rupturing his anal wall with his fist, resulting in bleeding and discharge. As Stoops' captivity neared its end, Berdella attempted to provide him with ice cream and soup, though Stoops found it impossible to keep anything down. By the final day of his confinement, Stoops had become so feeble that Berdella later recounted he could no longer "breathe in a sitting position." On July 1, 1986, Stoops passed away; a forensic pathologist later attested that the ruptured anal wall led to septic shock, ultimately proving fatal.

Sixth Victim ; Larry Pearson:

Description:

In the spring of 1987, Berdella struck up a casual friendship with Larry Wayne Pearson, a 20-year-old. Their acquaintance began when Pearson visited Berdella's shop and shared an early fascination with witchcraft and wizardry from his childhood. Pearson then temporarily stayed with Berdella, contributing by performing household chores as a form of rent payment. Berdella claimed he initially had no intention of taking Pearson captive. However, the plan to do so began to form on June 23, about two weeks after Berdella bailed Pearson out of jail and noticed Pearson's lack of interest in finding employment in the weeks leading up to his captivity.

On the afternoon of June 23, Berdella and Pearson watched the movie Creepshow 2 together before having lunch. As they drove around Kansas, Pearson playfully mentioned his past involvement in robbing gay men in Wichita. This revelation solidified Berdella's decision to hold Pearson captive. That evening, Berdella ensured Pearson became intoxicated, then injected him with chlorpromazine and moved him to the basement. There, he secured Pearson's hands above his head, attaching the rope to a brick column, and administered drain cleaner to Pearson's larynx. Berdella also brought an electrical transformer to the basement.

According to Berdella, Pearson was the most cooperative of his six victims. By the fifth day of captivity, after enduring torture including repeated electrical shocks and the breaking of several hand bones to establish submission, Berdella concluded that Pearson had earned his trust in continuing to comply with the sexual and physical abuse. As a form of reward, Pearson was moved to the second floor, with Berdella assuring him that if he remained cooperative, he would not endure as much pain as he had in the basement. In the latter part of his six-week captivity, Pearson trained himself to sleep without moving, so as not to provoke Berdella and risk further torture or being returned to the basement.

After six weeks, Pearson bit deeply into Berdella's penis, then screamed that he couldn't endure the ongoing mistreatment. In response, Berdella first rendered Pearson unconscious by striking him with a tree limb, then suffocated him using a bag and ligature. Berdella then drove to the hospital for treatment of his wound. Pearson's body was later dismembered in the basement, and initially, his head was stored in a plastic bag in Berdella's freezer before being buried in the backyard.

Final "Victim" (Got away) ; Christopher Bryson:

Description:

At 1:00 a.m. on March 29, 1988, Berdella abducted his final victim, Christopher Bryson, a 22-year-old male prostitute, enticing him to his residence with the promise of payment for sexual services. Inside Berdella's home, Bryson was struck unconscious with an iron bar and then secured to Berdella's bed. There, he endured similar methods of abuse and torture as Berdella's previous victims. However, in Bryson's case, Berdella repeatedly swabbed his eyes with ammonia, emphasizing to him: "The only things you need to think about are you, me, and this house."

After a few days, Berdella disclosed to Bryson that he had developed a level of "trust" in his captive. He explained that while he was open to discussing certain aspects of the abuse and torture Bryson was enduring, there would be no negotiations concerning the sexual abuse. Berdella concluded this conversation with a stern admonition: "I've gone this far with other people before, and they're no longer here because of mistakes they made."

Escape:

By the third day of his captivity, Bryson had managed to gain enough trust from Berdella to negotiate a daily routine where his hands were bound in front of him after the sexual abuse, rather than being tied above his head, under the pretense that it was affecting the circulation in his arms. He also persuaded Berdella to leave a television on in the room, with the remote control within his reach, for when Berdella was absent. Bryson admitted to investigators that he constantly strategized about escaping. On the subsequent day, he successfully freed himself from his restraints by using a book of matches Berdella had inadvertently left within his reach while he was away at work.

Cloaked only in a dog collar, Bryson fled from the house by leaping from a second-floor window, resulting in a broken foot. He sprinted towards a meter reader on the opposite side of the street, urgently imploring him to contact the police. The meter reader guided Bryson to the nearest residence, where the occupants promptly summoned the authorities. Within minutes, the police arrived on the scene.

Upon being questioned by four officers, Bryson initially claimed he had been abducted by Berdella while hitchhiking. He stated that he had been forcibly taken, subjected to rape and torture for four days, and managed to escape by leaping from a second-floor window of the property. Brydella had kept him restrained to a bed on the second floor, repeatedly sodomizing him, administering drugs, and injecting his throat with drain cleaner to impair his ability to speak loudly. As Bryson recounted his ordeal, the officers observed his red, swollen eyes, along with visible scars and welts covering his entire body. Two officers were tasked with discreetly monitoring the property, while Bryson was escorted to the Menorah Medical Center for treatment, accompanied by a third officer. Meanwhile, the fourth officer radioed the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) to request an official search warrant for the property.

Between December 13 and 15, 1988, after changing his plea and seeking an agreement not to pursue the death penalty, Berdella provided detailed testimony to prosecutors. He revealed that the film "The Collector," which he first saw in 1965, had a profound impact on him. Following his initial feelings of shock and disgust after his first killing, the movie resurfaced in his memory and became a driving psychological force behind his actions in subsequent murders. Berdella explained to investigators that once he chose to hold his victims captive, he no longer saw them as people.

In his confession, Berdella clarified that the abbreviated entries in his torture logs were shorthand descriptions of the abusive methods he inflicted, or they detailed his victims' reactions and his initial observations upon entering the room. For example, "CP" referred to the chlorpromazine he used for restraining, while "DC" denoted swabbing eyes with drain cleaner or injecting it into vocal cords.

Entries like "EK" or "EKG" signified the use of electrical shocks, while others specified the location of the abuse. For instance, in relation to victim James Ferris, Berdella noted he injected ketamine into his neck and shoulder. Berdella also confessed to burying the victims' heads in his backyard and explained the process of retrieving and cleaning the first skull. He denied any sinister intent behind these actions.

Berdella was able to name all of his victims. While one victim (Mark Wallace) was seized by opportunity, the others were captured after failed attempts to redirect their lifestyles, leading to frustration. He provided graphic details of the abuse and torture inflicted on each victim and recorded it in his logs. He stated that he tried to prevent malnutrition or infection by occasionally administering antibiotics or nutrients intravenously as the abuse escalated.

The methods of torture included high-voltage shocks, starvation, application of alkali-based detergents to throats, vocal cords, or eyes, and bludgeoning hands to render them unusable. Berdella admitted that the level of abuse increased with each successive victim, and he saw the Polaroid images he took of his victims as a "trophy or record of the event."

Despite extensive searches, the remains of all six victims were never recovered. They had been dismembered, placed in trash bags, and taken to unknown landfill sites.

Aftermath:

In November 1988, a series of auctions were conducted to sell off the extensive collection of artifacts and furniture seized from Berdella's residence and business. The proceeds from these auctions were earmarked to cover his escalating legal expenses during the ongoing legal proceedings. The auctions garnered significant national attention, with telephone bids pouring in from various parts of the United States. While some items fetched prices below expectations, the first day's auction alone raised over $60,000 for this purpose (equivalent to $151,000 in 2023).

In December 1988, a local entrepreneur acquired Berdella's house for an undisclosed amount. Subsequently, the property was demolished.

Victims , again... So no one ever forgets:

At the time of Berdella's apprehension, he had abducted, tortured, and murdered a minimum of six young men (initial suspicions arose regarding two other disappearances). Despite the presence of over twenty different men in the 334 Polaroid images and thirty-four snapshot prints found at 4315 Charlotte Street following his arrest, Berdella insisted that the six identified victims, whom he had confessed to killing, were the only ones he had murdered.

--Jerry Howell, 19, July 5, 1984: An acquaintance of Berdella who succumbed to asphyxiation after nearly 28 hours of captivity, involving repeated sexual assaults. Howell had known Berdella since 1979.

--Robert Sheldon, 20, April 12, 1985: Sheldon had temporarily stayed with Berdella on April 10, two days before Berdella decided to hold him captive on April 12. He was fatally suffocated on April 15. Initially, his head was interred in Berdella's garden, but later retrieved and stored in Berdella's bedroom closet.

--Mark Wallace, 27, June 22, 1985: Discovered accidentally seeking shelter from a thunderstorm in Berdella's tool shed. Wallace passed away due to a combination of oxygen deprivation and administered drugs at 7 p.m. on June 23.

--James Ferris, 25, September 26, 1985: The first victim whom Berdella admitted to intentionally torturing before his demise. Berdella recorded Ferris becoming delirious from the exhibited torture and administered medication. One of the final entries in his capture log stated, "unable to sit up more than 10-15 seconds." --Todd Stoops, 23, June 17, 1986: Abducted due to Berdella's sexual frustration with him. The torture leading to his death included electric shocks -via a spatula placed over his eyelid in an unsuccessful attempt to blind him. Stoops passed away from a combination of blood loss and infection on July 1.

--Larry Wayne Pearson, 20, June 23, 1987: Detained until August 5. Pearson was fatally suffocated after six weeks of captivity, which included the use of a piano wire tied around his wrists to cause nerve damage. His head was preserved and buried in Berdella's garden.

Things to note:

• During his initial year at the KCAI, Berdella earned a reputation as an attentive and gifted student. However, as he entered his second year, he adopted an outspoken anti-authoritarian stance. He formed connections with a group of students who provided him with drugs, which he then sold to fellow students for a profit. Alongside this, he started to regularly abuse alcohol. Additionally, he engaged in acts of animal cruelty on at least two occasions. In one instance, he decapitated a duck in front of his peers, and in the other, he conducted experiments involving sedatives and tranquilizers on a dog.

• At the age of 19, Berdella was arrested for attempting to sell methamphetamine to an undercover officer; he was released after posting a $3,000 bond (equivalent to about $25,600 as of 2023). He would later plead guilty to the offense and was handed a five-year suspended sentence. One month after this first arrest, Berdella and two other students were arrested for possession of marijuana and LSD in Johnson County. On this occasion, Berdella could not post bond, and he spent five days in jail; the charges against him and one of the other students would be dropped due to a lack of evidence.

• Berdella started frequenting gay bars in Akron in 1967, but it wasn't until several years after he moved to Kansas City that he formed any substantial relationships.

Bail was denied for Berdella at this stage, and the search of his property continued under the supervision of a criminologist from the FBI's Kansas City office

• When formal murder by dismemberment charges were filed against Berdella, his bail sum was increased to $750,000 (the equivalent of approximately $1,887,400 as of 2023)

• Aside from Pearson's severed head and the striations upon his vertebrae, the accompanying evidence, compiled to bring this charge, included some 60 Polaroid photos of Pearson; the logs Berdella had kept of his captivity of the subject (and which the handwriting was proven to be Berdella's); chemical tests upon Pearson's hair which indicated the subject may have received fatal dosages of various tranquilizers; the injury Pearson was known to have inflicted upon Berdella on August 5, 1987; and the fact Berdella had paid Pearson's bond in June 1987.

• Berdella entered this plea of guilty at his arraignment hearing (in the voluntary company of his public defender) due to the fact that, at this hearing, unless the state has filed notice of intent to seek the death penalty at an arraignment hearing in which first-degree murder charges were filed, the automatic sentence to be filed upon receipt of a guilty plea is life imprisonment without parole

• Berdella's identification of the two human heads upon his property had by this stage been corroborated by forensic anthropologists
