The loss of life is tragic obviously, but so is the loss of those planes! There were only 4 airworthy B-17 Flying Fortresses and 4 airworthy P-63 Kingcobras in the world at the time of this collision.

Well because this is an air show where they purposely fly close together in order to display the performance of the aircraft and the skills of the pilots. Flying in formation, though routine, can be dangerous if pilots lose their spatial awareness while so close to other planes.
