The deadliest air show disaster in history. The plane crashed during an aerobatics display, killing 77 people and injuring 543. Both pilots survived.
Following the disaster, the pilots stated that the flight map which they had received differed from the actual layout. On the cockpit voice recorder, one pilot asks, "And where are our spectators?" Others have suggested that the pilots were slow to react to automated warnings issued by the flight computer.

Same higher ups that made sure the pilots took the heat. yeah in the end it was on them to refuse but guess what these poor bastards probably wanted to eat - i cant imagine being grounded by the brass for refusing to fly would have made good prospects for their families well being. so they went anyway and they paid for it.

Thank you for this; that gives a lot of background to this calamity. What I read portrayed the pilots as being squarely in the wrong, but I should have known it was culpability being passed down the line with the characteristic post-Soviet corruption.

There’s an outstanding long form video on YouTube , it’s 15 minutes and includes in person interviews with the engineer and most importantly, the recorded phone calls when his dispatcher says there’s been a gigantic fire on a train blowing up an entire city .............and it suddenly hits the (hotel-resting) engineer. that. this. was. his. train. Oh man it gives me chills just thinking about it right now. He was in shock and disbelief for a moment then it really hit him.

Pilot clearly lost control mid-bank and was too low to recover. The same pilot error (too steep a bank for % lift available mid-turn) that has killed a LARGE number of showoff pilots. Sadly this time the morons survived. EXCELLENT camera work seeing as it was filmed on a steamed potato.
