Active duty navy eod here ive been in that bomb suit too many times to count in iraq and yes its body armor but depending on the size of explosive. Shit a 20 meter shockwave will kill you with a bomb suit on it like gettin hit by 3 buses at 1 time kinda fucked if you think about it

from my understand it was more so your body is preserved when you die and you can have an open casket funeral. when bombs get that big there's no saving you but they can at least give you body back to the family whole instead of in pieces

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That's a very civilian mindset and not how the army (or navy or any other service branch) works at all. Quite frankly it's a silly, reddit-worthy theory.

The EOD suit offers a lot of protection, meaning you will survive things that would otherwise kill you, and things that would hurt you may not have any effect at all. Keep in mind that most anti-personnel mines are designed to maim rather than kill. If the explosion is big enough you're obviously screwed regardless, but the suit will protect you from fragments/shrapnel and other hazards that could easily kill you if unprotected.

No armed force in the world would expend resources to achieve an "open casket funeral". Our mission is to preserve combat effectiveness.

Is there no better way than to risk a human? Is it a cost thing or do we not have the technology?

I'm thinking in cartoons here so forgive my ignorance on the matter, but can we like put a lead box or something over it and explode it?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If the device can be safely detonated or transported, that's the first choice. When that's not feasible, such as here, you typically have to use a human. Robots are mostly used to observe, transport and deliver a detonation charge.

Interestingly, UXOs (unexploded ordnance) are typically very safe (depending on the status of the fuze/detonator) and will usually detonate only if actively triggered. I've held a handful of raw, unwrapped TNT in my hand from the inside of a 155 mm shell. It's extremely poisonous, but won't explode unless you tell it to.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That big of an explosion would not be impacted by a lead box. It might be able to be buried in a box to dampen it but setting them off should be avoided at all cost. Even bullet proof glass would be very little impact to the shock wave close to it. Perhaps evacuating the area and having gear to absorb shrapnel might have some positive effects. There's a reason why we've moved to robots.

Honestly this is a horrible job to have.

Because there's a level of explosion that won't kill them, but would if not for the suit. Although pretty much any explosion will take their hands. The suit isn't meant to save them from all explosions. Not a whole lot of thought went into your comment.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

As you know, this is the right answer. To add some nuance, most military explosive devices and ordnance use fragmentation (rather than blast/shockwave) as the primary kill/wound mechanism, and EOD suits are very effective against fragments. Furthermore, anti-personnel land mines, which are the primary threat in a peer conflict, and primarily designed to wound rather than kill and an EOD suit provides effective protection.

Perhaps most obviously, an EOD suit drastically reduces the effective kill radius of an explosion.

The level of retarded reddit neckbeard armchair civilian idiocy is through the roof on this post, glad to see there are at least some sensible people around.

Is anyone really gonna fuck with an IED without one if they have the option? No. That's above your pay grade.

Jump in the discussion.

Why else do you wear fucking armor if its not to save or protect you from something you make no sense and read over my comment i didn’t just say “ armor didn’t protect from boom it useless” i was wondering why if you can preform maneuvers without it faster and better and with the suit you aren't even guaranteed survival so it seems pointless like if a gasmask only worked 50% of the time why even prepare one

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Because there's no such thing as a suit that can protect you from all explosions. That's a pretty obvious thing to assume. Bomb suits will save people from a certain degree of explosion, but bigger ones will kill them.

Read over my first comment, because I just had tonrepeat myself with this one.

Jump in the discussion.

Sometimes it's a small boom that the suit can save you from. Hard to tell until it go boom

The body suit isn't there to protect you, its to keep your body parts contained if the bomb happens to go off.

I don’t know about bombs as much I do other things when it comes to arms, but as a bomb guy isn’t there a point you should recognize trying to defuse will probably get you killed and opt for a controlled detonation instead? Maybe this guy made a mistake or just got unlucky, for me it’s impossible to tell.

I too know little, but I don’t think the right way about it is ripping the wires like you’re starting a lawnmower. At least it wouldn’t be my first idea.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes lawnmower technique does seem suspect but maybe there’s a method to this man’s madness. I’d conjecture that once you figure out how to disarm the bomb, you’d better be quick about it. Otherwise the bomb will explode before you finish the process of disarming it. Obviously something went wrong for our man here, but I wish I was able to discern more.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I don't know much but I don't think it's about how quick you do it like in movies. Sure some have a timer but you arnt ganna I pack the timer

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I doubt most bombs have a true timer as much they have like a tripwire sorta mechanism that when triggered detonates the bomb. But still I’d got to imagine the disarm has to be somewhat time sensitive once you start to jacking with the bomb?

Jump in the discussion.

When someone does something a lot of times, even if they're dangerous, they will one time or another just assume it will be as easy as the last time, that guy probably didn't think it would explode in his face. Dangerous career's deaths mostly happen because of this, e.g electricians.

Detonation is usually the primary means of disposing of an explosive device, if circumstances permit. Unfortunately, since this is too big and risky to transport and in a built up area, controlled detonation is not feasible, hence the attempt at disarmament.

During an actual controlled detonation, EOD engineers would typically deliver a trigger charge to cause the detonation. Most modern explosives are too stable to detonate when fired upon, set on fire or pretty much anything else except a detonator/detonation.
