Testimony of Awater, driver in the 6th technical assistance battalion (February 2, 1964)
《One day, a Wehrmacht car (police vehicle?) drove through Shitomir with a loudspeaker.
We were confined to the power plant where we worked. Over the loudspeaker it was communicated in German and Russian (Ukrainian) that on this day, at a certain time, Jews would be shot in the market square, or something like that. As I was free that day, I went to the market square at the appointed time. I was alone.
Once I arrived, I saw 50,60 Jews (men, women and teenagers) already gathered and guarded by the SS.
The number of guards was approximately 8 men. About 150 civilians, spectators, stood all around.
The Jews sat on the earth. I passed between the spectators and remained at a distance of about 2 meters from the Jews. So I can say that they were all wearing civilian clothes and they could not have been prisoners of war.
The guards asked those who were there if they had a score to settle with anyone. Ukrainians came forward one after the other to accuse one or another Jew of some crime. Then, the Ukrainians especially hit, kicked and brutalized these Jews, still in a seated position. This lasted about 45 minutes.
Then they first pulled two men from this group and executed them on the gallows. A wooden scaffolding was already ready. 3 nooses were attached to it.
The 2 "delinquents" had to get on a truck. We put the buckle around the necks of these male people, and the truck drove off. This is how the execution was carried out.
