I think about it this way, you have an eternity of nothingness ahead of you..what's the rush? Take advantage of your one in a trillion opportunity of consciousness to feel emotion, positive or negative.
I'm all for euthanasia when it comes to terminal physical pain, but if you're experiencing emotional anguish, it will pass. If you ever feel overwhelmed and want the depression to end, sleep on it. You'll still feel shit the next day but eventually your mind will wire itself to cope with the distress into a content depression and eventually you'll become bored enough to start stimulating yourself with positive activities.

Ooh, this is likely to be an unpopular opinion on here. Most users on here advocate suicide for even the slightest setback in life, and believe there's no possible way to overcome depression. And definitely don't call a woman who commits suicide "selfish" for leaving children behind. "You don't know what she was going through!"

I think people need to realize more that they already got all the resources inside of themselves. The capacity to endure and get better is in everyone of us but it seems a lot of people are losing that or they never developed it at all. A lot of it is blocked or lost due to negative early childhood experiences I think. It's like a hard drive full of files but no directory. The capacity to help yourself is there but you don't know where to look. Mental health institutions need to show patients that they are resilient and that they can do more than they think they can do. At least in my country it's unfortunately still more about "Hello I'm the expert, here is this pill, then we give you therapy which cost 200 bucks per hour" There is room for improvement.

I see where you're coming from but the problem with some of these people is that they haven't developed the confidence in their minds and bodies which would allow them to endure these peak situations. Call it emotional intelligence or whatnot. I don't care. He broke up with her and to her it's the end of the world. And if she doesn't have the tools at hand to deal with it, boom... And I know of enough people who went to so called mental health hospitals and they still killed themselves. They're good for absolute emergencies but at least in my country it seems there is just no decent follow up afterwards - you have to wait for therapy forever if you can affort it at all.
Sometimes you can't just "sleep on it" too. Ever heard of insomnia? Yeah... then you're forced to be with yourself until you eventually become tired. For some people it becomes too much at one point and then they pull the trigger.
But what I don't get is why she didn't at least get into drugs... there are so many half dead drugged up homeless people on the streets while she still got a house over her head and probably a big of money (and she's even good looking) - so why kill yourself? I can sort of see why they do it but still it's sad because it's so so unncessary. But in their view it's the only possible option. Sad. Just sad.

Not everyone would rather be drugged up and homeless than dead. Some would rather kill themselves before they dropped so low. Watching that transformation where they suffer the side effects, like their skin getting lesions, their teeth falling out, and organ failure. Not to mention all the dangers with that kind of lifestyle: violence, rape, and potential murder.
I'm not saying death is better, but drugs aren't necessarily a last resort, either.

I fully understand that emotions get the better of us and it's hard to think straight, I've experienced this and attempted rash decisions in the moment and glad it didn't work out. You simply can't tell someone not to kill themselves and expect them to listen, but if someone has a small window to think rationally during the moment, my message serves as some perspective to weigh up on.

Where does this ‘one in a trillion chance’ come from? You can’t possibly apply that to existence because we have no possible way of knowing how that works. If your parents conceived you in a room 2 degrees warmer and you were born female there’s no way to tell if you’d be the same subjective consciousness or not. It just doesn’t make any sense at all.
You can’t compel someone to enjoy their life by saying something like that. Either they exist or they don’t. If they don’t it’s a non-issue, so the only people you can even say that to are ones that already exist.

It's a more plausible line of reasoning that each individual sperm will seed its own seperate individual consciousness than having a predetermined queued consciousness on conception regardless of genetic outcome. Then again, we haven't truly pinpointed the origin of consciousness, so it's open to many interpretations. Either way, in a trillion or the chances of your parents meeting at all, it's still pretty slim.
