EFFORTPOST SELF-HARM INFORMATION POST [again, educational but gorish]

//IF YOU'RE NOT MUCH OF A READER, SKIP TO TYPES OF SELF-HARM FOR IMAGES//

BRIEF LIST OF TOPICS

1). What is self-harm?
2). Why do people self-harm? Psychological and biological reasons.
3). Common self-harm terminology in online communities.
4). Types of self-harm [GRAPHIC]
5). [META] Why do people watch self-harm content?

--- -- -

1). What is self-harm?

Self-harm is the act of purposeful pain caused to oneself. People can engage in this behaviour consciously or unknowingly.
Many people do not realize their outlet for negative (or even positive) emotions is classified as self-harm. The example that comes to mind, is a tattoo artist I used to know, who would do tattoos on himself to feel the pain when upset.
From the outside, it doesn't seem like the typical self-harm method, but the psychological and biological reasoning is the exact same.
Self-injury is typically done without the intention to end one's life.
--- -- -

2). Why do people self-harm? Psychological and biological reasons.

Generally, it's to cope with negative emotions, especially when you have no other (healthy) way to work through your issues.
Important thing to mention is, self-harm is very addictive. More on that later.

//Interactions between psychology and biology//

The quote "Self-harm changes emotional pain into physical pain" might seem cliché, but that's the reality.
When it comes to sensing physical and emotional pain, our brains use the same two areas: the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex.

These are the areas in the brain that process pain, regardless of whether we stubbed our toe or found out our parents are dead.
Pain relievers also act on these two areas, regardless of whether someone is experiencing emotional or physical pain. A 2010 study in Psychological Science revealed that the pain relievers such as Tylenol or paracetamol (acetaminophen) helped to relieve the distress associated with social rejection and also decreased activity in the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex.

People who self-harm, have learned that, while the pain peaks with self-injury, it then comes down the other side.
The physical pain lessens – as does the emotional pain.

//Addiction//

Self-harm is incredibly addictive in its nature.
Recent neurobiological work indicates that drug addiction is due in part to the positive reinforcement associated with increasing extracellular dopamine levels in the brain.
Similarly, self-harm is believed to stimulate dopamine production in the brain, and the feelings of relief this hormone helps produce can lead vulnerable people to become addicted to the process.

//Strictly psychological reasons//

a) Acting out on impulse when under high emotional distress, clouded judgement, feeling the need to act out on one's overwhelming emotions
b) The belief you deserve to be hurt, self-blame, generally an attitude developed due to trauma (C-PTSD, PTSD, Borderline personality disorder).
c) Self-hate, this one is most likely going to lead to suicidal ideation.
d) Feelings of emotional numbness (caused by depression, dysthymia, cyclothymia, bipolar type 2) which cause the person affected to desperately try find a way to feel something. This reason is strongly tied to the mechanism described in //Interactions between psychology and biology//
e) Feelings of grandiosity, beliefs of one's immortality and greatness caused by mania (bipolar, especially type 1).
f) Poor emotional regulation, emotional outburts (borderline, autism).
g) Distraction from negative feelings, stopping traumatic memories and dissociation.
h) Craving and gaining a distorted sense of control in your life.
i) Self-hard addiction, without any additional reasons.
j) Having something in life that one can always rely on.
k) Real or perceived guilt.
l) "Attention-seeking", believing you need to do something drastic for people to care about you or believe you're experiencing issues.
m) Having no healthy outlet for emotions.

3). Common self-harm terminology in online communities.

4). Types of self-harm.

CUTTING

Probably the most common form of self-harm. No need for an explanation.

REMOVING PARTS OF BODY

Ripping off body fat, ripping off skin, removing parts of tissue.

IMAGES AND VIDEOS:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/xe8gyzr7.png

PIERCING

Stabbing oneself, pushing objects into your body.

IMAGES AND VIDEOS:

BURNING

No explanation needed.

IMAGES AND VIDEOS:

CARVING OR SCARIFICATION

Carving/homemade scarification is about cutting/burning/etc patterns onto your skin.
This is also a body modification procedure, but people depicted in the following photos are doing this with the intention to cause oneself pain.
Some people prefer this to normal cutting since it requires more focus (it's more calming, takes away attention from your issue) and leaves prettier, more innocuous scars.

DELIBERATE SELF-NEGLECT

This can involve many behaviours, it's about neglecting your health (broken bones, illness, diet, wounds, etc)
The images I have unfortunately only portray two of these types.

NOT LETTING INJURIES HEAL

IMAGES AND VIDEOS:

BLOODLETTING

IMAGES AND VIDEOS:

OTHER:
Hitting, medicine misuse, drug consumption, biting, bone-breaking, choking.
While I do have examples of hitting, I feel uncomfortable including it in this post since it's mostly autisic meltdowns lol

5). Why do people watch self-harm?

The reason why I'm such a big advocate for keeping the self-harm category on this site is because I know for a fact many self-harmers watch this type of content to stop harming their own self.
Seeing someone else do what you associate with relief, dopamine, and help can to some extent let you feel the associated feelings.

It's all thanks to empathy and imagination. You either empathize with the person harming themselves, which your brain can turn to actual sensations on your body, or you imagine that person is you.
Neither of those are exactly a healthy coping mechanism but it's a hundred times better than actually, physically harming yourself.

Of course, that's not the only reason (although the most important). Some people just watch it out of curiosity, or for the same reason you watch regular gore.
--- -- -

!Closing notes!

It's often difficult for people who don't self-harm to understand why anyone would. But knowing about this bit of neuroscience might help make self-harm a little less mysterious.
Shedding a bit of light on the subject was my intention here, hopefully this will create a bit more understanding.

Can't upvote this enough.

Also read about sometimes people eating random stuff as a deliberate act of self harm

I feel like you should mention that the type of sh that you show is the result of an escalation that many take years to reach due to it not being "enough", this is severe self harm and most of the people who do it are not at this level but are cutting to dermis. this doesn't invalidate their form of pain but for the person in sh online communites who doesn't reach fat it always feels like they're not harming themselves.

I can attest from my own experience and from having a lot of friends online who struggle with this that the physical manifestation of one's pain does not equal to how much they're suffering.

I hope people can be kind to those who went through similar things as me and not make fun or hate on self harmers, trust me, we struggle a lot on our own to even believe our cuts are "worthy" or "enough" to be considered sh or to even deserve medical care

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I was going to mention this. This kind of sh is extreme. Most people who sh don't take it to this level. Even I, who has been self-harming for about 9 years, only have 1 cut that is somewhat deep, and it's nothing compared to these images and videos

the first wound in the self neglect section looks like that not due to neglect but due to proper medical treatment (cauterization by silver nitrate to stop bleeding of a blood vessel)

Such a fascinating topic

And it's clear that self harm is not all about attention seeking

And thank you for your in-depth write up it's top tier

I personally watch it because it is the hardest gore to watch. If I had to pick a favorite to watch it would be bloodletting and my least favorite is skin removal. Yucky!

I think the one person in the bloodletting video died. ‘Cause there's no way she/he stopped bleeding from the wrist

Thank you for sharing this, my significant other had/has a past/problem with self harm, and has been struggling lately. I have depression, bipolar, suicidal tendencies and a few more things.. so I do understand a little bit. I’ve self harmed before in the past when I was very young but nothing crazy.

So hopefully after I’m done reading this I can understand a-little more about why she does it.

Because not too long ago she did self harm. And this time it was different she didn’t cut herself she burned herself really bad like 4-5 times maybe more on her ankle :/ I’m not mad at her, I’m not disappointed in her or anything I just want to understand more than what I already know/why she does it. I know some people do it for attention (not all) that’s why I don’t really like sell harm but in her case I know it’s different… she does it for the pain.. She doesn’t tell anyone, doesn’t post stuff, she doesn’t even tell me sometimes, I have to find out on my own.

I love this woman and plan on marrying her so like I said I’m just trying to understand it some more and not being her down for it.

It's really nice hearing about someone actually putting in effort to understand someone's problems, which many would see as taboo.
She's lucky to have you :)

hey this might not matter to many others but just wanted 2 let you know i appreciate you not including the autistic meltdown videos, like genuinely. i know those situations exist irl, ive seen it happen, but it can be upsetting to see, still knowing that autistic people just get profiled... and also big preesh for the other mentions of mental illnesses (of which i have many). i see people drop the R-slur all the time on here so its nice to find others that has at least done some research and shows respect. good post op thank you

I really appreciate this post. Your last point is super important and it hits the spot for me. I am fine with cutting myself but watching other people do it to themselves makes me feel some type of way that makes even me not want to do it. I've been clean since January and I'm enrolling in a more intensive program that will hopefully help me find better ways to cope, too.

If y'all need someone to talk to don't hesitate on it.

Self harm or suicide isn't the answer, if you have suicidal thoughts pls reach out to somebody, and if you have self harmed before and feel like you aren't as beautiful as someone who hasn't cut. You are, the outside of a person doesn't matter it's in inside that does.

There is something I feel needs to be mentioned, as an active self-harmer trying desperately not to relapse at the moment (Hence why I’m here).

Watching self-harm videos is very helpful, but only temporarily. This could be just me, but I’m an extremely curious person, and after I turn off the self-harm videos and that rush is gone, I only want to cut worse and see the deep cuts for myself. I don’t think self-harm should live on this site. It only helps temporarily, then usually makes the urges worse.

My most recent relapse was because of this. Something triggered me, the suicidal ideations came back, the urges got worse, I came here looking for relief, and that made it harder for me to stop myself each time I’d turn off the videos.

But… nevertheless, this is a gore site, and self harm is gore.

I've said it before and will say it again; I completely disagree with self-harm and would never advocate for it.....just as I disagree with banning it being shown on this site.

That being said, this is a community of vast differences, as it will all be. If a huge majority of people didn't want to see self-harm videos/pics, why not put them in a containment section in which videos of this type do not show up on the main feed?

This way those that 'need' it in a sense have access, but those that don't be bothered no more. I may not care one way or another....just hate seeing so many complaints about the same things without suggestions of realistic solutions.

Informative post, I say bravo.

The part I hate the most is the “cutesy names” for body parts, it reminds me of grooming younger people, and trying to package and rebrand the names of body parts to keep everyone tucked in a delusion together. Why is everything so cute and pink? Why the baby talk? Why the cute anime characters? Why is the target demographic very young women/girls?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

it isn’t cutesy names it’s just what that layer of skin looks like , cat scratches , dermis. styro, epidermis. beans, fat layer. laffy taffy, muscle and bedrock is bone

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I disagree that renaming body parts after food and candy isn’t infantilizing or making things sound more cute or less serious. Bedrock is also a term used in Minecraft, laffy taffy is Candy, etc. I look at this as rebranding terms/aesthetic because a subculture was made around self harm online. Hello kitty, cute anime characters, pink themes etc.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

so true but it’s mostly so people won’t find out as easily about their little community and infantilizing it is not ok, i agree with that

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The part I hate the most is the “cutesy names” for body parts,

While I agree with you in general, I'd like to point out those names were created by children and not without a reason - it's easier to say styro than epidermis.

I tried to answer this question in this post, but as a tldr: people who start self-harming are vulnerable individuals in difficult situations.
Sometimes getting help and actually solving their problems might be close to impossible. Either that or they're not in a state of mind where they can think logically, that's just the nature of mental health problems.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I feel like drugs are completely worse though, and self harmers are looking for pain not a high (or both, but pain's #1) i mean drugs can completely take over your life and renove your ability to even function or have a job but self harm doesn't. It's much more temporary and it doesn't make you incapable to think and it (usually) doesn't kill you if you're actually safe.

Hope this helps
