So the crazy things about muskets. The round is the same diameter as a .50 caliber, so it's half an inch wide. Because of the shape, the musket balls being round rather than pointed like most of today's rounds, a musket ball does A LOOOOOT more damage than even a Barrett M107.

I don’t buy that. The kinetic energy of the .50 BMG is infinitely more because of the type of propellant and amount of propellant.

Well I watched a video on what a .50bmg does to a ballistic torso, and one where they tested a musketball on the same kind of torso. The .50bmg went through and did a bunch of damage, but the musketball blew a giant hole straight through.

Yes it is, however think about it this way: 50 bmg was designed to counter mechanised armor and penetrate lightly armored tanks/vehicles, therefore it only applies a small part of the force at it's disposal when hitting a human and the rest flies out in overpenetration. Where as a musket might have less total energy, it was made againts humans and plate armor, meaning it effeciently uses all of it's energy up when hitting those targets, causing a lot more damge. Both are still likely to kill you tho

Yes, but no. The disparity in kinetic energy is so great that the .50 BMG doesn’t have to unload all its energy into the target. So while it will overpenetrate, it’ll almost certainly do more damage. Muskets generally do not remove limbs upon striking the target.

Yeah a 50 bmg round at high speed will do way more damage usually, but if a musket ball hits bone, it can nearly tear a full limb off. Brown bess musket balls were barely twice as wide as a 5.56 but tore fist sized holes through people alot. I would much rather get shot by a modern rifle if there was a doctor nearby

Yeah, but not a proper .50 cal rifle. I know because I own a black powder firearm. There’s more to it than just bullet size. There’s also propellant type, powder charge size, make of the bullet. The musket balls are liable to shatter. Conical rounds generally don’t. Granted, versus unarmored targets, a .50 musket and .50 BMG will both rock a person’s shit pretty bad.
