I wouldn't say pointless. His wife got $1.28 million (equivalent to about $3.05M in 2021) all because, he killed himself in office.
My logical mind tells me he did because A. in the chance he was unjustifiably arrested (through his understanding an "American Gulag") his wife would get nothing from his entire political career if he was forced to resign and then go to prison and B. Even if he was found innocent he still resigned and his wife would still likely get nothing. That left him with this one option. T.V being the best platform because, none of the guessing of how he died and if there was a who when you got evidence Live. He musta really loved his colleagues and wife and couldn't risk them all being financially screwed from a legal battle.

That's what I was thinking the whole time. He was talking too fast and sweating, but those lights are hot. You'd never know you were watching a guy who was going to off himself in a couple minutes. People were probably moving toward him to take the gun and he didn't want to hurt anyone else, so he was telling them to stay back. He made his peace with doing this, he smuggled in a handgun that weighs close to four pounds in an interoffice message envelope, and then he did it. That's determination.

This is why suicide is unfair to the people still alive afterward. They have to deal with it. He was probably a Korean or Vietnam war combat veteran and may have seen hundreds of people killed, and maybe killed some himself. Whatever the reason, he was a very cool cucumber in that situation. Even when he glanced back at Budd as the blood river was still flowing, he just turned back around very calmly and kept acting like the voice of reason. This was not his first brush with sudden, gory death.
