One crucial thing I noticed is that the dad sees at least a milliseconds of his son shooting himself, but his subconscious tries to protects him and he yanks his head and continues walking for a second. His hesitation before resorting to the slap is time to process what he just witnessed.
Also, notice that the gun doesn't spend a full second on the table before the son picks it up and uses it, the dad's attention then was still on the boy.

I think it always takes SOME effort to take a life, even though it's your life. But i think the futility and hopelessness in the fact that your own dad is telling you to off yourself (whether that was a bluff or not) makes it easier. Getting support, but not to keep you alive when you already have a voice saying "you'd be doing ppl a favor by killing yourself" made it easier too. Poor kid. I wonder if the man got charged or not. This happened in Thailand back in 2015. The son was 21 years old living with his parents. News story stated that the dad, a traffic cop, was angry at the son for playing video games and not helping close their family-owned convenience store. The dad came back from work and his son playing video games instead of helping close the store. He berated his son, using what I would say… extreme language. The father then challenged the son to shoot him (the dad), pulling out and chambering his 9mm handgun. Instead, the son chose to end his life, most likely tired of his family’s bullshit.
The son was most likely depressed. Thais usually go to college or go out to find jobs and live independently when they turn 18. Instead, he’s 21 and stuck in his parents’ house/convenience store, getting berated every day for playing video games.
