I've seen people try to do that too. The few i have seen usually the person notices the faller when they are a few seconds from hitting the ground. They'll just instinctually try to catch them not having it register in their head that it's a fool's errand. I think there is a name for the phenomenon but from my memory, in those instances, it is usually the fault of that phenomenon and not so much people being stupid. The jumping from the bus and shit like that tho, def stupidity or intrusive thoughts winning.
