Police say a sergeant missed when he shot at a man they believe shot two women Friday evening in West Nashville during a domestic dispute.
When 54-year-old Jeffrey Carlson encountered Sgt. Michael Hunnicutt, the man raised a gun to his chin and fired one round before collapsing. Don Aaron, a spokesperson with MNPD, said Hunnicutt, a 16-year police veteran, then fired a reactionary round, but missed.
Carlson was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. Both women sustained non-life threatening injuries, Aaron said.
A call came into 911 about 5:20 p.m. about a shooting at a home in the 5700 block of California Avenue, the residence of Carlson's ex-girlfriend. At the scene, the homeowner's 79-year-old mother, was found in the front year with multiple, critical gunshot wounds, police said.
Moments after finding the first victim, police found Carlson's ex-girlfriend about half a mile away in the back yard of a home in the 1500 block of 52nd Avenue where neighbors were giving medical aid, police said.
According to police, the woman told investigators that when she came home Carlson was inside and immediately shot her. She ran out the back door. The woman's mother was then shot before she tried to run out the front door.
Carlson also ran out the front door and attempted to carjack a vehicle in the 5700 block of California Avenue.
MNPD said they had no prior reports of domestic violence between Carlson and the women.
Hunnicutt will be placed on administrative assignment, Aaron said, as are all officers who fire their weapon. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations is handling the investigation into Carlson's death. MNPD will investigate the shooting of the two women.

The minute and 45 second long video starts with Hunnicut's in-car camera as he pulls up behind Carlson near the intersection of 55th and Tennessee avenues. Hunnicut gets out of his patrol car, draws his weapon and advances slowly on Carlson whose back is to the officer.
Show me your hands," Hunnicut says.
In the video, Carlson takes about 6 more steps before turning around, taking a wide stance and drawing his hands, with a gun, up under his chin.
"Put the gun down," Hunnicut says.
"No," Carlson responds.
Hunnicut repeats the command twice more and again Carlson tells him no each time.
"Do it now," the officer says.
"No," Carlson says for a fourth time.
Hunnicut tells him one more time but before he can finish his sentence Carlson fires. Immediately after, Hunnicut fires his gun.
"Start me medics to 55th and Tennessee," Hunnicut calls into his radio.
The officer approached Carlson, whose face is blurred out in the body-camera footage, and starts to secure his hands as backup pulls up to the scene.

In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of an under-construction building in Chhattisgarh's Raipur city on Monday. In a video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, onlookers can be heard shouting in the background trying to prevent the suicide bid, even as the teen in school uniform prepared to jump from the building. The incident took place in Boriya Khurd area under Tikrapara police station limits in the afternoon, City Superintendent of Police (Tikrapara area) Rajesh Chaudhary said. The Class 9 student jumped from the sixth floor of the building and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead, he said. No suicide note was found and further probe is underway, the official said. According to eyewitnesses, the girl stood on the edge of a balcony for some time before jumping to death.

The horrific video was streamed on the account of a Turkish man Erdogan Ceren earlier today.
He tells that camera he plans to commit suicide because his girlfriend has broken up with him.
Erdogan, 22, say on camera: "No one believed when I said I will kill myself - so watch this."
Sitting in his room bare-chested his first attempt at the shooting fails.
It appears the shotgun locks so he has to try again.
Unfazed he readjusts the camera and again points the weapon at the centre of his chest, clutching the camera in one hand and the gun in the other.
Around 37 seconds into the four minute clip, the gun fires and the footage goes completely black.
The heartbreaking clip posted in public has led to nearly 12,000 comments and around 4,000 shares.
There were desperate comments at the time including one person who wrote "don't do, for the love of god".
According to the Turkish website bugununhaberi.com, his relatives heard the shooting and discovered his body.
Local media reports state he later died in hospital.
Turkish police have launched an investigation into the death, which reporetdly happened in Duzici, a town and district in Osmaniye Province.
It is reported that hours before he died, Erdogan wrote on Facebook: "Our love saga would be written, "Behold, the eyes would not cry, half of you is going to tell you now, my hands do without that side."
Last month he had also posted: "And now he passed away in peace. Why do you think spring is in the middle of ice. Just shut up and smiled at him, I gave a lesson

The adult was taken to a hospital, but their condition was not immediately released. Family members say the woman is in critical condition after being stabbed in front of her 3 children. Denis Muravyov and Katya Vlasova, or known as “Russian Bonnie and Clyde” were a teenage Russian couple and on November 14th 2016, the pair encountered a shootout with police that resulted in their deaths.

-Denis Muravyov (14.8.01 - 14.11.16) And Katerina Vlasova (10.9.01 - 14.11.16) were a teenage Russian couple who had gotten together 7 months prior to their runaway and standoff. They had met at their High School and started dating sometime in April of that year (2016), even though both sets of their parents were against their relationship.
-On November 10th Katya snuck out to a friends sleepover even though her curfew was 21:00. Her mother found her that night and a heated argument broke out between them, which supposedly ended with Katya sustaining bruises to her neck.
The next day Denis and Katya stole their parent's credit cards, withdrew money and took a bus to the Town of Strugi Krasnye a moderate distance away (80km). When they arrived in Strugi Krasnye they headed to Katya's Stepfather's Summer Home nearby.
-On their third day at the house, (November 14th) Katya's Mother and Grandmother began knocking on the door early in the morning. Denis & Katya answered the door, and Denis asked them to go away.
Katya was standing behind him with a Knife in her hand, which wasn't intended to be threatening according to her recounting of the event in one of their livestreams; but when her Grandmother noticed it she lunged at Katya trying to take it from her, in the process cutting Katya's Hands.
Denis then Drew the TT-33 Pistol, shot Katya's mother in the right hip, and they Barricaded themselves inside while Katya's relatives retreated to seek help and call the police.
Shortly afterwards the Police arrived outside of the house, and were going to try and negotiate with them; but as they began to, Denis appeared in an upstairs window and opened fire on their van with one of the shotguns.
One officer was injured although not severely and the Police fled to the cover of Bushes further down the road.
-An unknown but short time later, Denis & Kaya began live-streaming to Periscope.
During the Livestreams which altogether spanned almost 2 hours; they answered classmates questions in shock at their school, Fired at the empty van, a TV inside before throwing it outside as it began to smoke, Prepared and ate Noodles, and towards the end began Drinking Alcohol, and Chainsmoking as reality began to set in.
-Their final livestream began briefly showing the shotgun lying infront of them, and all throughout they were sullen and quiet. Between their answers to questions, only Katya sniffling was audible. As the stream closed to an end, Katya avoided eye contact with the camera, tearing up while she said their last words. "Thanks everyone for your support. For the time we spent together. This was really awesome. We will miss you. Love you. Goodbye."
-Katya was too afraid to kill herself, as she made clear towards the end of their streams, so she asked Denis to do it for her. She sat on the couch in the upstairs room where they recorded almost all of their livestreams, and Denis shot her in the face; before getting down on his knees in front of her and shooting himself in the face.
-An overview of the couch Katya died on, with the Shotgun resting against the arm of it, and her brain matter visible on top of a TV in the lower left corner.
-On November 18th they were laid to rest with Denis being buried first, and Katya being buried second. Shortly after, and a slight distance away.
