Christian market attacked in Magdeburg, Germany. Reports of 4 fatalities and 60-80 injuries. A car drove into a group of people at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg on Friday, German news agency dpa reported. The driver of the car was arrested, the agency said, citing unidentified government officials in the state of Saxony-Anhalt
Magdeburg, which is west of Berlin, is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt and has about 240,000 inhabitants.
On Dec. 19, 2016 in Berlin, an Islamic extremist attacker plowed through a crowd of Christmas market-goers with a truck, leaving 13 people dead and injuring dozens more. The attacker was killed days later in a shootout in Italy.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had said late last month that there were no concrete indications of a danger to Christmas markets this year, but that it was wise to be vigilant.
According to initial reports from Christmas market visitors, a driver of a black SUV turned past the former McDonald's towards the Alter Market; in doing so, he broke through barriers and ran over several people at the Christmas market.
According to eyewitnesses, he drove in a zigzag course across the entire market area - apparently to catch as many visitors as possible. When he tried to turn around, he was stopped and arrested by police officers. There is no information yet about the identity of the suspected perpetrator.
According to multiple sources, the police found multiple explosives inside of the vehicle, thankfully they did not detonate while he was among the civilians.
The death toll in a car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has risen to four people, and 41 others were gravely injured, the Bild newspaper reported on Saturday.
Eighty-six people are receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries incurred in the incident on Friday evening in the central city, while another 78 sustained minor injuries, the report said.
The driver has since been arrested, according to multiple German media reports. Police said the driver drove "at least 400 meters across the Christmas market" through the crowds.
Emergency services have set up tents to care for the wounded, while 10-20 have reportedly arrived at Magdeburg University Hospital for emergency treatment.
The spokesperson for Magdeburg, located some 150 kilometers (93 miles) south-west of Berlin, said the incident appeared to be a deliberate attack.
Bild newspaper quoted a witness named only as Nadine saying she had been walking arm-in-arm with her boyfriend, Marco, when the car came hurtling towards them.
"He was hit and ripped away from my side," Bild cited her as saying, adding that he had been injured on his leg and head and taken to hospital, but she did not know where to find him.
Update as of 22/12/2024
A nine-year-old child and four adults have been killed after a car drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg.
More than 200 people were injured - at least 41 critically - in the attack on Friday evening.
A black BMW SUV ploughed 400 metres through the crowded market in an attack that lasted about three minutes.
The suspect has been named in local media as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi citizen who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had worked as a doctor.
Prosecutor Horst Walter Nopens said on Saturday that the investigation was ongoing but suggested the background to the crime "could have been disgruntlement with the way Saudi Arabian refugees are treated in Germany".
The suspected attacker has no known links to Islamist extremism. His social media and posts appear to suggest he had been critical of Islam.
A source close to the Saudi government told the BBC it sent four official notifications known as "Notes Verbal" to German authorities, warning them about what they said were "the very extreme views" held by al-Abdulmohsen.
The source, who asked not to be named, said these notifications were ignored.
However, another experienced counter-terrorism expert said the Saudis may be mounting a disinformation campaign to discredit someone who tried to help young Saudi women seek asylum in Germany.
Al-Abdulmohsen is currently being questioned and prosecutors expect to charge him with murder and attempted murder in due course, the head of the local prosecutor's office said on Saturday.
Reiner Haseloff, the premier of Saxony-Anhalt state, said a preliminary investigation suggested the alleged attacker was acting alone.
City officials said around 100 police, medics and firefighters, as well as 50 rescue service personnel, rushed to the scene shortly after 19:00 local time on Friday.
Al-Abdulmohsen is thought to have driven into the market through an entry point which was reserved for emergency vehicles, police said.
The suspect is a psychiatrist who lived in Bernburg, around 40km (25 miles) south of Magdeburg.
Originally from Saudi Arabia, al-Abdulmohsen arrived in Germany in 2006 and in 2016 was recognised as a refugee.
He ran a website that aimed to help other former Muslims flee persecution in their Gulf homelands.
On Saturday evening, a memorial service was held for victims of the attack at Magdeburg Cathedral.
The service was attended by families of the victims, emergency workers and government officials, including German chancellor Olaf Scholz.
During a visit to the market earlier on Saturday, Scholz described the attack as a "dreadful tragedy" as "so many people were injured and killed with such brutality" in a place that is supposed to be "joyful".
He told reporters that there were serious concerns for those who had been critically injured and that "all resources" will be allocated to investigating the suspect behind the attack.
Witnesses described jumping out of the car's path, fleeing or hiding during Friday's attack.
In an interview with German paper Bild, Nadine described being at the Christmas market with her boyfriend Marco when the car came speeding towards them.
"He was hit and pulled away from my side," the 32-year-old told the paper. "It was terrible."
Meanwhile, Lars Frohmüller, a reporter for German public broadcaster MDR, told BBC Radio 4's World Tonight he saw "blood on the floor" as well as "many doctors trying to keep people warm and help them with their injuries".
Friday's incident is not the first time people at a Christmas market have been attacked in Germany.
In 2016, Anis Amri, a Tunisian man who failed to gain asylum in Germany and had links to the so-called Islamic State (IS) group, drove a truck into crowds gathered at a church market in Berlin, killing 12 and injuring 49 others.
Two years later, a gunman opened fire on a Christmas market in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, killing five and injuring another 11 people. The gunman was shot dead by police two days later.
Only last month, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser talked about the need for "greater vigilance" at the highly popular markets but said there were no "concrete" indications of danger.
She also reportedly pointed to tougher laws on weapons in public spaces following a knife attack in Solingen, west Germany, in August in which three people died.
The man was of Saudi-Arabian origin, he was anti-Islam and was wanted by Saudi Arabia on charges related to terrorism and human trafficking from Saudi Arabia & the Gulf states to the EU. In a suicidal move, Germany refused to extradite him and gave him political asylum in 2006.

Two people, including a Louisiana State University women's pole vaulter, died in a car crash on the school's Baton Rouge campus Wednesday night, according to college officials. At approximately 9:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the driver of a Honda Accord was traveling southbound on Nicholas Drive and attempted to make a left turn on South Quad Drive, the Baton Rouge Police Department said in a statement on Thursday.
When trying to make the left turn, the "Honda Accord was struck by the driver of a BMW motorcycle that was traveling northbound on Nicholson Drive."
The driver of the car and the motorcyclist, 23-year-old Bohdi Linton, both died on the scene of the accident, police said.
Dillon Reidenauer, 18, was identified as the driver of the car, LSU Athletics said in a statement on Thursday.
"We are devastated by the tragic passing of Dillon Reidenauer, who was taken from us much too soon," LSU track and field coach Dennis Shaver said. "Everyone in our LSU Track & Field family is keeping Dillon's loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, as well as those of the other individual lost in the incident."
Reidenauer was a freshman at LSU, pursuing a degree in interior design and was a part of the women's pole vault team, the college said.
Originally from Abita Springs, Louisiana, Reidenauer was one of the top prep pole vaulters in the state while attending Fontainebleau High School. She finished second at the 2024 LHSAA 5A Championships and placed fourth at that same meet as a junior.
Her bio on LSU's athletics page describes Reidenauer as "one of the best pole vaulters in the state of Louisiana coming out of high school."
LSU is one of the top pole vaulting programs in the nation, thanks in part to alum Mondo Duplantis, who holds the world record in the event and won gold at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Reidenauer, as a freshman, was not yet competing, but was learning under the team's top pole vaulter, senior Johanna Duplantis, the younger sister of the acknowledged greatest pole vaulter of all time.
Shaver said the team is currently on the road at College Station, Texas, for the SEC Championships and "thanks Texas A&M for offering their support and compassion."
LSU Athletics said they are "providing resources and support to all of our student-athletes and staff directly impacted by this tragic loss."

flying is considered the safest way of traveling, but there are still dangers as you will see here
On September 16, 2011, a modified Mustang crashed at the Reno Air Races, killing the pilot and 10 spectators, and injuring 70 others.
aftermath:
The Ramstein air show disaster occurred on August 28, 1988, in Germany, when three Italian Air Force aircraft collided mid-air during a performance, killing 70 people and injuring hundreds.
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked in November 1996 by 3 men en route to Australia. They threatened to detonate a bomb. Ignoring fuel warnings, they forced the plane to the Comoros Islands, where it crashed into the Ocean, killing 125 of the 175 people on board.
Video footage captures the tragic 2015 Shoreham Airshow accident that claimed the lives of 11 individuals. Astonishingly, the pilot managed to survive the incident.
On April 29, 2013, a National Airlines cargo plane, operating as Flight 102, crashed shortly after takeoff from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. The tragic incident claimed the lives of all 7 crew members aboard the aircraft.
In 1989, a devastating incident occurred when United Airlines Flight 232 crash-landed following a catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine. The flight carried 296 passengers and crew members, and sadly, 112 of them lost their lives in the tragic accident.
Aeroflot Flight 1492 crashed in May 2019, bursting into flames after a hard landing caused by an electrical failure. The fire, which originated from the rear, led to the death of 41 out of 78 passengers.

Usually plane crashes end up in a big mess so it‘s hard to recover victims
Photos of plane crash victims
The most common reason for plane crashes is usually human error. This means pilots or other ppl in contact with the plane might make mistakes, or the maintenance crew might miss something. Even with all the high-tech systems and training, people can still mess up. Even if planes nowadays are almost self capable of flying, we need people controlling and looking over them.
Planes are also a very popular victim of terror attacks.
The most famous one being 9/11
also belonging to the 9/11 attacks was

He took three lives, and he gets to walk away unscathed," Nicole Taylor, Athena Taylor's mother, said. "I hope this lays on his shoulders every single day of his miserable life."
Rafiki's LinkedIn profile shows that he worked as a truck driver for BP Ventures in Grand Rapids,MI and Kalon
Accident Synopsis
On March 23 around 2:38 p.m., police said they responded to a crash at State Route 163 eastbound, west of mile marker 12. This is in the Laughlin area. It involved a semi-tractor and two motorcycles. One of the motorcycles had two occupants.
According to police, the motorcycles were heading eastbound on the highway when a 2020 Freightliner semi-truck traveling westbound crossed the median into their path. The driver was identified as Claude Rafiki from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Rafiki was driving in the No. 1 travel lane – the one closest to the centerline – and not in the No. 2 lane as required for semis, a Nevada State Police Highway Patrol trooper told a grand jury. The arrest report said an off-duty Clark County Fire Department captain witnessed the crash.
He said he had been driving behind Rafiki, 29, when he saw the truck veer onto wrong-way lanes, the report said.
The crash killed Owen Hart, 22; Athena Taylor, 21; and Jeremy Gebo, 44; all of St. George, Utah. The coroner confirmed they died from blunt force trauma.
Owen Hart's family told 8 News Now that he had just turned 22 and was himself beginning a career as a trucker. He and his family were celebrating his birthday with a motorcycle ride, they said.
The ride involved several other motorcyclists, including Hart's parents, who were celebrating his 22nd birthday. His parents witnessed their son's death.
"I feel guilty for leaving my son on the side of the road of the scene of the crime while it was being investigated — it all feels so wrong and unnatural," Melissa Hart, Owen's mother, said.
The victims died at the scene.
In court Wednesday, Meng said Rafiki's dashcam recorded him weaving for 10 minutes. He added prosecutors believe he fabricated logbooks to make it look like two drivers were switching off shifts.
Troopers said Rafiki, 29, had bloodshot eyes and an "unsteady gait" after the afternoon crash March 23. Troopers said Rafiki had an "unsatisfactory performance" in his field-sobriety screening, the report said. They drew blood as Rafiki agreed to submit to a drug test.
A trooper who was described as a drug recognition expert wrote in the arrest report that Rafiki was suspected of being "under the influence of dissociative anesthetic and central nervous system stimulants and is unable to safely operate a motor vehicle safely."
Rafiki told police the "wind" caused him to go the wrong way, documents said. He said he was not impaired and took medicine for seizures, documents said. A trooper testified "there was definitely wind" at the time he arrived at the crash scene.
A wind advisory was issued on the day of the accident. Weather forecasts warned that gusts could reach 55 miles per hour, according to KLAS. Nevada law stipulates a person convicted of reckless driving resulting in death could serve a prison sentence between one to six years per count. The felony is probationable. Rafiki had a valid Michigan commercial driver's license, but his two-year medical certification was set to expire on March 24 - the day after the crash, according to documents obtained by 8 News Now. Michigan drivers are required to submit an updated medical clearance before it expires, something Rafiki never did. His CDL hasn't been valid since March 24.
As part of Rafiki's plea deal, he would serve the sentence concurrently, meaning it is unlikely Hardy would sentence him to more than 10 years of total time if he chooses prison time over probation.
Rafiki, an African immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2021, originally faced DUI charges, which prosecutors later dropped as test results did not show alcohol or drugs in his system.
Though the incident happened in Laughlin, the case was heard in Moapa Valley Justice Court and Rafiki remained jailed in Las Vegas, records said.
Claude Rafiki, 29, of Michigan, pleaded guilty to three counts of reckless driving resulting in death. (NSP)
Rafiki's initial court appearance was delayed several days as the courts were working to find Rafiki a translator, records indicated. Rafiki speaks Kinyarwanda, a Central African language.
Rafiki had a valid commercial driver's license out of Michigan at the time of the crash, but his two-year medical certification was due to expire March 24 — the day after the crash, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained. Drivers in Michigan are required to submit an updated medical clearance before the expiration date, officials with the Michigan Secretary of State's office confirmed. Because he did not submit updated medical certificate information, Rafiki's license was downgraded and his CDL has not been valid as of March 24.
Rafiki's certificate did not include any medication restrictions, but prosecutors said Rafiki took medication for epilepsy.
To this day, the exact cause of the crash is unknown. State police never released any information about why they believed Rafiki was impaired other than what was in the documents.

Died March 23,2024 Laughlin, NV
Owen, loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, was killed in a tragic accident while on a motorcycle trip with his fiance, Athena and parents, Brad and Melissa Hart of St. George, UT.
He will be missed immensely by his family and friends. His death has left a gigantic hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His kind-hearted, fun, adventurous spirit drew people to him and he was adored by younger family members who couldn't get enough of his silly, playful side. Always the jokester, his contagious smile and easy-going nature brought joy to everyone around him.
Born in California, he and his older sister, Sara, were practically inseparable, and their special bond continued into adulthood. He was a mischievous child, but his exuberance and laughter were usually enough to get him out of serious trouble. The family moved to St. George where there were numerous occasions to get out and enjoy each other's company whether camping and fishing, riding ATV's and dirt bikes or just hanging out watching a movie or playing games. Family time was important and with large families on both of his parent's sides, everyone has a special memory of Owen- whether at the beach, desert, lake or mountains.
He attended Pine View HS where he wasn't the most motivated student, but enjoyed playing football and hanging with his friends. When he did put his attention to something, he gave it his all and wasn't afraid of a challenge. After a lot of karate classes, he obtained a second-degree black belt. Also a prolific online gamer, his generous attitude brought him more friends in the virtual world, as well. He graduated from Millcreek HS and it was there he met his future girlfriend, partner and fiance, Athena Taylor. After dating for 4 years, Owen proposed last Christmas and they were in the process of planning their wedding and future together.
He really hit his stride a couple of years ago; growing into a more mature, responsible young adult. His Dad taught him to drive trucks and he applied himself, worked hard and received his CDL in 2022. He was extremely proud when he got a job working with Brad at Whitaker Construction. They made a great team.
His love of riding started with BMX bikes, progressed to ATV's and dirt bikes and ultimately led to his first Harley Davidson. The whole family participated in weekend rides and traveled with a great group of friends and co-workers. They visited many beautiful parts of the west and even attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Owen was preceded in death by grandfathers, Donald Hart and Dave McLachlan.
Survived by his parents, sister, Grandparents Barbara (Gary) Redmond, Dottie Mclachlan, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who already miss him.
Athena Faye Taylor
Athena, Mom and I named you knowing it would represent strength and wisdom. We had no idea how much of that you would embody in your life and in your very soul. Your strength, your light, and your kindness was felt by so many.
Athena, our beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend was taken from us in a tragic accident while doing what she loved, riding on the back of her fiance's motorcycle with all her family and friends. Unfortunately, Owen Hart, her fiance, was also lost to us while protecting our Athena.
Athena will be missed by all as her light, her goodness, and her laughter touched so many. Her laughter was unique and often silly, but it was contagious. She was fearless in her friendships and in her love for her fiance, Owen. Their love was one born of fairy tales, of the love that so many would be lucky to have, to love your best friend.
Athena loved all animals but she loved cats most of all. A few years ago she found her cat, "Mr. Kitty" and the two were inseparable. When Athena and Owen found Mr. Dan, Mr. Kitty's three legged little brother, their family was starting to build.
Athena had a love of soccer and before her passing she was finally able to join a soccer team, the Strikers. Though they weren't the best, she was having so much fun with her friends.
Athena was a hard worker, and dedicated to doing a good job. She started working for a cleaning company, Dirt Devils where she grew into a strong and independent woman. She excelled at it, often telling us better ways to clean. And yes Kiddo, we will clean that shower door. She moved on to a new job as an executive assistant at St. George Truss Co. She only was able to work for a little while but she was really excited and enjoyed the change and was loved by everyone there.
She loved her rides with Owen. The awesome feeling of being on a bike was something she shared with her grandfather Gary Taylor. Her love began from riding on the back of her grandpa, Ray Beal's, 4 wheeler when she was a little girl. Athena glowed every time she put on her leathers and clung on to Owen and he kept her safe.
Athena was the best of her mom and dad. She was like them in every way. You can see them both in her smile, in her laughter, and in her love. Though, I'm still sorry I gave you my feet.
Athena was preceded in death by her grandfather , Ray Beal, and her doggies, Bella ( Dooter ) and Daisy. She is survived by her mother, Nicole Beal Taylor (Mike Showell), her father, Jason Eugene Taylor (Jamie Larsen), her brothers McKinnley and Kyler Taylor, her grandmother Verlynn Beal and her grandparents Gary and Candy Taylor, as well as numerous cousins and friends. Last but not least, Mr Kitty and Mr. Dan the cat.
Jeremy George Gebo
Jeremy George Gebo, 44, was tragically taken from us on March 23, 2024, in Laughlin, Nevada, while riding his motorcycle alongside 11 others.
Gebo was born on October 17, 1979, in New Hartford, New York. As a child, he relocated to many states and countries until he finally found "home" in Utah, where he raised his two girls. He never passed up a breakfast date, long phone calls, or a chance to express just how proud he was of the women they had become. He made sure everyone knew how much he adored them.
He began working for Whitaker Construction in January 2004, in which he excelled in all that he did, setting the bar high for fellow colleagues. He was a natural born leader. Even in the midst of chaos, he maintained a calming presence that brought peace to others. Gebo was promoted to Superintendent over Southern Utah in January 2021. There he oversaw the establishment of the Saint George natural gas division.
Gebo was a man of many talents. While he took great pride in his viking tattoos, 2023 Street Glide, sourdough starters, and crocheting, the thing he enjoyed most was cooking for and spending quality time with his loved ones. Each of his meals were made with love and cooked to perfection.
Gebo always emphasized that blood didn't define family. Though he is survived by many, we'd like to acknowledge his children, Josh Briggs, Natia Gebo, Kembrey Gebo, Rocky Hatch, and Braelee Hatch; god-son, Tuff Hatch; grandson Rowdy Hatch; and niece Lilly Mendez. Preceded in death by his son, Gavin George Gebo.
Final Outcome for C-24-382446-1 | State of Nevada vs Claude Rafiki
Quoted from California Department of Motor Vehicles; "Regardless of what causes a lapse of consciousness (LOC) disorder, it can affect one's ability to operate a vehicle or vessel. If you lose consciousness for a short period of time, you can also lose control of your vehicle, which can result in serious accidents or death.
Some medical conditions can cause LOC disorders. These disorders cause you to lose consciousness or awareness for a period of time. Epilepsy is the most common LOC disorder, and it can occur at any age. Seizures can occur outside of epilepsy, caused by anything that impairs normal brain function, such as trauma, tumors, infections, genetics, stroke, injury, metabolic imbalances (such as diabetic comas), and more. Sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, can also cause a loss of awareness or consciousness."

On October 26, 2023, Two teens, Jesus Ayala (18) and Jzamir Keys (16), recorded themselves deliberately mowing down retired police chief Andreas Probst (64) during his daily morning bike ride, killing him. "I'll be out in 30 days, I'll bet you." And "It's just hit and run, slap on the wrist." Is what Ayala reportedly told cops as he was being arrested, expecting to be tried as a juvenile. To his surprise, he was tried in adult court. At one point in court, the teens appeared to be smirking at each other and smiling at the victim's family.
