Who Was Ricardo Lopez

Ricardo Lopez was born in Uruguay in 1975 and later immigrated to the United States with his family. He struggled with severe social isolation and low self-esteem throughout his life. In his early twenties, Lopez became obsessed with Icelandic singer Björk, developing a fixation that he documented extensively in video diaries and his journal. His obsession ultimately turned violent, leading him to plot an attack against the singer. With his attempt of an attack, he was then infamously known as Björk's stalker.

Ricardo Lopez's video diaries recorded over several months in 1996, reveal his escalating obsession with indie singer Björk. These tapes documented his intense feelings of isolation and frustration, providing a disturbing glimpse into his deteriorating mental state and sick obsession with the singer and actress, going as far as calling her his ‘sweet little thing'.

Ricardo's Breaking Point

Ricardo Lopez's obsession with Björk took a violent turn when he learned of her romantic relationship with British musician Goldie, who is a Black man. This news seemed to trigger Lopez's racism and obsessive tendencies. Feeling betrayed and enraged by Björk's relationship, he became fixated on punishing her. His video tapes reveal that his motive for the planned attack was driven by his irrational belief that Björk's involvement with Goldie was unacceptable, fueling his violent intentions and leading him to plot sending a letter bomb to harm her. He believed that the only way he and Björk would be together romantically is if they were both dead.

The “Last Day” Tape

Ricardo Lopez's "Last Day" tape, recorded on September 12, 1996, offers a glimpse into the final hours of his life. In the video, Lopez documents his preparations for both his planned attack on Björk and his own suicide. He appears calm and nonchalant as he outlines his intentions and the steps he has taken to ensure his plans are carried out.

The tape shows Lopez preparing the letter bomb intended for Björk, explaining his reason for the attack with little to no remorse. He expresses a twisted sense of satisfaction, believing that his actions will make a significant impact and bring the two together. Throughout the recording, Lopez alternates between moments of eerie calmness and emotional outbursts, revealing the extent of his psychological suffering .

In the final segment of the tape, Lopez strips naked, shaves his head, and paints his face red and green, stating that he wants to die in a unique manner, and also claims it's so it wouldn't traumatize his family if they were to find his dead body. He then positions himself in front of the camera, rocking side to side and singing Björk's cover of “I Remember You” by Dorothy Lamour , At one point, he seemed hesitant to pull the trigger after placing the gun in his mouth, waiting for the perfect timing within the song to kill himself too. Untimately, Lopez places a gun in his mouth, and shoots himself after shouting, ”This is for you!”

Aftermath

Authorities later discovered his body when the neighbors called the police to alert them of a strong odor from his apartment, another tenant below him alerting the police of the blood seeping through their ceiling. Ricardo Lopez was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the head. His tapes has been left specifically for the FBI to investigate, the message on the wall specifically saying so.

Björk's Response

Björk was alerted about Ricardo Lopez's plans by the authorities after they discovered his video diaries and the letter bomb in his Florida apartment. On September 16, 1996, four days after Lopez's suicide, police intercepted the package intended for Björk before it could reach her. The discovery prompted an immediate response to ensure her safety.

Upon learning about the situation, Björk expressed deep concern and distress. She released a statement through her record label, expressing her relief that no one was harmed and her condolences to Lopez's family. Björk took a brief hiatus from public appearances and interviews to process the incident. She later resumed her career, but the incident had traumatized her and she never felt the same since.

Bjork wrote about the situation in a bonus song for her Japanese edition of her ‘Homogenic” album , the song titled “So Broken”.
