LA, CA, USA - May 23, 2024

An SUV parked in a Van Nuys parking lot on Thursday night suddenly exploded after the driver lit a cigarette next to some propane canisters he stored inside.

Firefighters and police rushed to a supermarket parking lot in the 7200 block of Van Nuys Boulevard after receiving a call about an SUV that exploded around 10:30 p.m., police said. When first responders arrived, the man told them he had been trying to light a cigarette when the explosion happened. Investigators said he was living in the vehicle during the explosion.

He suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Pieces of the parked vehicle flew in every direction, one of which lodged into a nearby tree. The explosion left the Toyota SUV mostly in mangled pieces. The sound of the explosion could be heard at least a few blocks away, according to a man who lives around the corner from the parking lot, who said it was "like an earthquake rattling the windows."

"But it was gone as soon as it started," said Ken Smith, adding that he looked out his window and saw his neighbors standing outside their home and looking around after the loud boom.

LAPD closed the parking lot following the detonation.

No other details have been released by authorities.

Around 50 people were arrested for trying to overthrow the Congolese government, the country's army said. The military blamed the attempt on Congolese politician Christian Malanga, who had been living in self-exile in the United States for years.

The military said most of those involved were Congolese citizens living outside the country and foreigners, including three U.S. citizens. The army said two of the U. S. citizens arrested were Malanga's son Marcel and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, allegedly one of Malanga's business associates.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A man is in custody after the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to calls of shots fired inside the Georgetown Kroger Thursday evening.

Officers responded to multiple calls regarding a man shooting inside the Georgetown Kroger, located at 6310 E State Blvd, just before 6:15 p.m., according to a release from FWPD. When officers arrived they learned the suspect had fled the scene.

Officers then searched the Kroger for victims or additional shooters. No victims were found but officers were able to locate several casings in the store.

While at the scene, officers got word of a man near the store matching the description of the alleged shooter. He was then taken into custody.

Early Friday morning, FWPD identified the suspect as 20-year-old Richard Klaff, Jr. He's preliminarily charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Klaff was booked into the Allen County Jail.

It is not believed that any other shooters were involved. There is no active threat to the community, according to the press release from FWPD.

A Facebook live video went viral following the shooting. In the video, later removed by Facebook, a man is seen in the bathroom threatening to shoot 11 people. He then walks around Kroger while on live, stating, “If I'm going to go out, I'm going out with a bang.” The suspect then appears to unload six shots before the video cuts off.

WANE 15 asked an officer on the scene if the person in the Facebook Live was the same person arrested. Officers at the scene confirmed it was, but a public information officer with FWPD declined to make the same statement.

Not far from the Kroger, Indiana State Representative Bob Morris was coaching baseball at Georgetown Little League when the safety protocol was initiated.

“I got a call from someone with the Fort Wayne Police Department that there was an active shooter at Georgetown Square, he was in the Kroger store,” said Morris.

Morris said his main goal was to keep the kids safe.

“We secured the kids, got the kids in the dugout for an active shooter situation,” Morris said. When he received another call that the suspect was heading northbound, the direction of the fields, he canceled the games and had everyone leave.

Morris confirmed with WANE 15 that the suspect was in a store north of Kroger when police apprehended him and his weapon.

“Safe neighborhood, a safe shopping center, and it hits close to home that things can happen like this,” Morris said.

A spokesperson with Kroger shared a brief statement about the incident:

We are deeply saddened by the incident at our E. State Boulevard store in Fort Wayne. We are cooperating with the investigation by local law enforcement, and we have initiated counseling services for our associates. Plans to reopen the store will be announced later.

For now, to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we are referring questions to the Fort Wayne Police Department.”

Eric Halvorson, Kroger Spokesperson

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 700 President Tracy Bartak issued the following statement late Thursday night:

“Our hearts go out to all of our Kroger family who were affected by tonight's shooting. Store 425 will be closed the rest of tonight and tomorrow. Beginning Friday, mental health counselors will be available free of charge for anyone in need both in person at the store as well as via phone or FaceTime.”

Bartak went on to say that employees should contact their local union representative for information on how to schedule virtual counseling sessions.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.

The stabbings were not serious, but he's suspected of a murder on Connecticut.

Police have identified the suspected assailant as Jason Ravizza, 26, of Martha's Vineyard, who is also suspected in a murder investigation in Connecticut.

A woman named Lisa Dembowski told WCVB 5 in Boston that her three daughters and their friend were the victims.

The girls were there to see the movie “IF,” a film starring Ryan Reynolds.

“I got a call from my sister that my oldest daughter had called her (and) that I needed to get to the AMC movie theater right away because they had been stabbed,” Dembowski told the outlet. “Honestly, I just got in my car and headed right there.”

Ravizza fled the scene, and then proceeded to a McDonald's rest stop.

Ravizza allegedly reached through the drive-thru window and stabbed a 29-year-old man with a knife, according to investigators who reviewed surveillance video from the fast-food joint.

Then he parked his black 2018 Porsche Macan, went inside and knifed a 21-year-old woman. The victims were also treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Ravizza may also be linked to a murder investigation in Deep River, Connecticut.

'Which one am I gonna choose? Let me find someone good real quick, I ain't gonna kill no old-a** man,' he said. 'I'm going out with a bang... baby watch,' he said Klaff eventually spotted a woman 'Oh yeah, I see one, I see one,' he said —- He fired six rounds at her, but missed, and no one was injured He then fled the store and was arrested in another store nearby soon after Klaff was charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and locked up in the Allen County Jail.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A man faces attempted murder charges after the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to calls of shots fired inside the Georgetown Kroger Thursday evening.

The grocery store was closed Friday due to the ongoing investigation. It's expected to open back up Saturday at 7 a.m.

And in Allen Superior Court documents released Friday, 20-year-old Richard Klaff Jr. allegedly told police he'd “always wanted to kill somebody.”

Early Friday morning, FWPD identified the suspect as Klaff. He's preliminarily charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Klaff was booked into the Allen County Jail.

It is not believed that any other suspects were involved. There is no active threat to the community, according to the press release from FWPD.

An FWPD officer wrote in court documents released Friday that Klaff “recorded himself attempting to murder two employees and an unknown customer.”

A Facebook live video, which WANE 15 has made the decision not to post due to the shooter's desire for publicity, has gone viral. It starts out with Klaff in the bathroom threatening to shoot 11 people.

He then walks around Kroger while live-streaming, spewing racial slurs and saying, “So who am I choosing, hold on. Let me find someone good real quick… I'm going out with a bang.”

“Oh yeah, I see one, watch, I see one,” he says. That's when Klaff appears to fire off six shots in the direction of a Black woman and two employees in the bakery before the video cuts off.

According to court documents, Klaff told police he'd switched shirts at the nearby Dollar General, with his original shirt still in the convenience store. He allegedly admitted to dumping his black and gold .40-caliber handgun in the dumpster. Investigators searching the dumpster found Klaff's cell phone and wallet along with the gun, according to court documents.

In an interview with detectives, Klaff allegedly asked if anyone had died. He claimed he had 11 bullets loaded in his gun and that's why he specified in the Facebook video that he intended to kill 11 people, according to court documents.

Investigators asked Klaff if he was searching for someone in particular to shoot, to which he allegedly said he didn't want to shoot anyone old. He's then accused of saying he chose the people he shot at “because they were standing in a position with no cover.”

According to court documents, Klaff went on to say he “always wanted to kill somebody, that's all I wanted to do, I was supposed to go to the military, I couldn't wait on that, obviously.”

WANE 15 went back to the scene Friday morning and found Kroger was closed. There was an employee outside letting people know the store wasn't open for business. An FWPD officer was also parked at the entrance.

Mayor Sharon Tucker shared a statement with WANE 15:

Violence has no place in our community.

I'm so grateful that no one was injured in last evening's incident.

I want to thank and recognize our dedicated public safety team for a quick and effective response. I also want to say I'm sorry to the individuals who were working and shopping at the Kroger store. It's wrong that we're facing dangerous situations by simply working hard as employees and getting groceries.

I want to reiterate my commitment that the safety of the public is and will continue to be a top priority of my administration.

Fort Wayne is a caring and giving community and we won't stand for this type of behavior.“

MAYOR SHARON TUCKER

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.

Now, Why Is It Bad To Watch People Die?

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/171482853234954.webp

Watching people die can have psychological consequences. Some individuals may become desensitized, while others may experience distress or even post-traumatic stress disorder. The trauma of watching someone die can be quite debilitating for one's mental health. Most people are familiar with Elisabeth Kubler Ross and David Kessler's five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These effects can be compounded when you're the one watching someone die.

Interestingly, our fascination with death and the act of watching it has been around for a long time. Humans have sadistic urges, masochistic urges, and voyeuristic urges. However, it's only in the past few decades that spectatorship of death has grown widespread. Technology plays a significant role in this phenomenon. Let's explore further:

Faces of Death: About forty years ago, the cult classic film “Faces of Death” brought to light our collective desire to see what J.G. Ballard called “the horrors of the real.” This 105-minute compilation of killings and autopsies was purportedly the first movie to depict real people dying on screen. Although most of the deaths were later revealed to be fake, it became the first viral video.

Digital Cameras and Dial-Up Internet: In the 1990s, the ubiquity of digital cameras and dial-up internet gave rise to the first “shock sites”. Rotten.com, a digital house of real-life horrors, attracted thousands of visitors daily who sought out the most gruesome content in existence.

Cellphones and Proliferation of Shock Sites: By the mid-aughts, anyone with a cellphone could take and share photos and videos of anything, anywhere, at any time. The number of video-focused shock sites proliferated, making death something whose sights and sounds could be freely consumed by millions of people.

In summary, while our fascination with death and the act of watching it is not new, the widespread availability of technology has amplified our exposure to such content.
