A 26-year-old Russian boxer called Arest Saakyan died on January 7 following injuries sustained in a fight on December 26 last year.

Boxing Scene reported that Saakyan died after suffering a cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain, under two weeks after his most recent match — an eight-round knockout defeat to Igor Semernin, in Tolyatti, Russia.

Reports from boxing media suggest that Saakyan took the fight at short notice.

A stocky super middleweight at 5-foot-8, Saakyan was an orthodox fighter with a pro record before the fight of six wins (five knockouts) against two defeats.

Prior to fighting Semernin, a fellow novice boxer albeit one with a flawless knockout record, Saakyan had never been finished.

Saakyan went into his ninth fight with little preparation. According to his sister Svetlana Petoryan, he had to drop around 30 pounds of weight in "a very short span of time."

Brazil – On the afternoon of last Monday (07), Dayana Cristina Rodrigues Machado, 33, was arrested in flagrante delicto accused of killing her husband, identified only as André, with a knife and then cutting off his genitals. The case happened in São Gonçalo, in Rio de Janeiro.

The crime allegedly took place in the early hours of Monday, around 4 am, at the couple's home, who were together for 10 years and had been separated for two.

They were the parents of two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl. Even though they were separated, they ran a pizzeria together.

On the night of the crime, the former couple went to a snack bar and argued. In a moment of anger, André even attacked one of the couple's children.

"The argument continued when they got home and he threatened her again. In a moment of loss of control, strong emotion and fear that he would attempt on her life after several threats, Dayane ended up killing him," said the murderer's defense attorney.

Dayana's family and lawyer claim that she suffered physical and psychological abuse from her ex-husband, and had already reported him to the police.

According to the defense, she regretted the crime and voluntarily turned herself in to the police. The case is being investigated by the Homicide Division of Niterói, São Gonçalo and Itaboraí (DHNSG).

A moment of playfulness, however, turned into a tragic incident when the boy pulled his father backward. The man lost his balance and fell on his minor child. A saleswoman, who was standing nearby, helped the man to stand up, then picked up the motionless boy from the floor and handed him over to his father. The boy was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. "In the video, the man's entire weight was on the upper body of the child, including the boy's head and neck. The child might have suffered a cervical fracture," a paediatrician in Guangzhou was quoted as saying.

A 25-year-old ex-con was shot to death outside a Queens deli during an argument with his killer.

Joseph Valdez got into an quarrel with a man who pulled out a gun and opened fire outside the store on 21st St. near 41st Ave. in Astoria about 10 p.m. Monday, cops said. Valdez suffered three gunshot wounds to the arm and upper body.

Medics rushed Valdez to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, but he could not be saved.

The gunman ran off and is being sought.

A motorcyclist died as a result of being hit by a vehicle that ran a red light in Malaysia last Friday.

Around 7.40 in the morning, the 53-year-old victim was seriously injured in the head before being pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

He was riding Honda Vario motorcycle and a Perodua Aruz was driven by a 39-year-old woman who ran a red light. She suffered minor injuries to her hand.
