USA. A woman's roommate found her beaten to death on a mattress located on the floor of their living room in front of a couch in the apartment they shared. The roommate denied participation in the homicide. The victim had sustained severe blunt force injuries of the head. The location of impact spatter on the left edge of the couch and wall behind indicated that blows were struck to the victim while her head was consistent with a sitting position as well as in her final position. Multiple cast-off stains were present on the ceiling over the mattress. A bloodstained aluminum softball bat, which exhibited multiple dents, was located in the bathroom. The blood on the bat was determined to be consistent with that of the victim.

Crime scene investigators noticed apparent bloodstains on the clothing and legs of the roommate as she was being questioned. An area on the left sleeve and upper left rear of her T-shirt contained several cast-off bloodstains that were consistent with the blood of the victim. Her shorts contained a single small bloodstain, and a few impact spatters were present on her lower legs. In an attempt to explain these bloodstains she stated that all she remembered was standing over the victim on the mattress with a bat in her hand. She was ultimately convicted at trial.

October of 2012. Guerrero, Mexico

Two young waitresses got off work and left the cocktail bar that employed them, traveling together with two men they had been speaking to while at work. About an hour or so later, people living in a residential area a few miles from the club called police and reported the sound of screams and gunshots from the copse of trees behind the housing development.

When police arrived, they found both young women to be deceased from gunshot wounds to the head, delivered at close range. There was no indication of a struggle and no signs that the girls tried to run, so it is presumed that they were killed 'execution style' while kneeling or sitting down. No additional injuries were noted on the girls' bodies and neither one had been sexually assaulted (as far as testing and visual observation would verify anyway). Not sure how long it took the police to find them out there. The blood on both girls looks dried, so a little while for sure. But the younger one's jeans are still visibly damp from a perimortem loss of sphincter control. Pretty sure blood on skin typically dries within an hour in the outdoors, but denim can hold liquid for up to 6 hours in open air, so likely somewhere within that time frame.

The police do not know the order in which they were killed nor the motive for the crime. Drug-related murders were at an all-time high in this area in 2012 and working at a bar would definitely have put them in proximity to criminal enterprise that could have gotten them killed. That said, the area also had an abundance of 'domestic' homicides and serial killings who took advantage of the swathe of drug murders to hide their crimes by blending in. At the time the girls were found, the specific area had an operating serial killer who was later caught, but had been masking his crimes as Cartel body dumps. He never took credit for these two and was discounted as a suspect because they were presumed to have been taken and killed by more than one perpetrator. Of course, who knows if the killer they caught was even working alone. He was killed in prison by Cartel members, ostensibly for using their gang's reputation to hide his wrongdoing.
