This is why most places have thick mats on the floor. When doing stunts like this you are definitely going to screw up a lot. Even Olympic level gymnasts use mats at the competitions. For dangerous skills they even have a coach to spot them. The coach isn't catching them, but can force them to rotate to safer position on the fall. This guy needed a buddy to push on his back for a brief instance so he would have landed on his back. That would still hurt but much less likely to be life changing.

You're right, but these beach gyms don't do that. Jocks want to show off and that's how you get there.

As someone who has actually taken gymnastics lessons all through my child and teen years, those mats do nothing if you land on your neck.

mat or no mat, you hit your neck the wrong way, hard enough, you'll die, it's all about the force you hit the surface with.
