I always tie a rope to the center of the length of cable for ust an event. If the cable snaps, the rope will take up the energy...not my head.

I'm trying to picture what you're saying and I'm failing; please explain as though I have the cognitive function of someone who took experimental drugs in exchange for a donut.

You have the tow strap/cable attached to the stuck vehicle and then the other end attached to the tow/pulling vehicle. Directly in the middle of both vehicles, you tie a heavy rope or wrap a heavy chain leaving lengths of the rope/chain hanging down onto the ground. "IF" one of the attachment points fail and the strap/cable/chain begins hurling away from the attachment point and toward the other vehicle, the rope/chain tied on in the middle of the line, will absorb the energy and prevent the line from continuing into the other vehicle. It decelerates the lines movement very rapidly.

No tie points to the ground. Just tie a heavy rope to the center of the tow line. If the line snaps on either end, and begins flying, once it reaches the rope or chain, that said rope or chain will absorb the energy and the line will fall to the ground.

A rope tied from the hauling vehicle to the cable's middle point would limit the cable's travel distance to around half its length in case it snaps

What's weird is I've always heard it with just a blanket over the middle! I don't know how it could dissipate energy either.
