CHILD WARNING Itaewon Tragedy

(possible effortpost?)

Setup

The Itaewon Halloween incident, a harrowing event that unfolded on the night of October 29, 2022, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of large-scale public gatherings. Itaewon is a vibrant district in Seoul, known for its nightlife and cultural diversity. Itaewon had become a hub for both locals and tourists alike, seeking leisure and entertainment. The Halloween festivities were expected to draw large crowds, especially after years of pandemic-related restrictions. However, the influx of people far exceeded expectations, and the narrow streets of Itaewon became densely packed with revelers. Hype for the event quickly grew as the weeks leading up to the event drew closer.

Disaster

The disaster struck around 22:20 KST, as the crowd surge turned catastrophic in a confined alleyway. The lack of adequate safety measures and crowd control led to a tragic crowd crush. Reports indicate that 159 people lost their lives, and 196 others sustained injuries. The victims were predominantly young adults, and the incident included a number of foreign nationals, reflecting the international nature of the crowd. Many died due to suffocation from the pressure of other people pushing into the alleyway. The disaster is marked as the deadliest in South Korea since the Sewol ferry sinking in 2014, and the most significant mass casualty event in Seoul since the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995.

Aftermath

In the aftermath, the incident sparked a national outcry and a series of protests against the government and police for their failure to prevent the tragedy despite prior warnings. Investigations revealed a series of oversights and errors in preparation and response. The South Korean President faced intense scrutiny and calls for resignation, although he remained in office. Memorials were erected, and the international community extended condolences and support. The Itaewon Halloween incident not only caused immediate grief and loss but also prompted a reevaluation of public safety measures and crowd management practices in South Korea and beyond. It stands as a somber lesson in the importance of proactive planning and the value of each individual life within the collective experience of public events.

Where would you mark this on the disaster scale?

You can put blame wherever you want, but humans also have to take responsibility for themselves. I've been to events that were overcrowded, taken one look and just said nope. You seriously can't get any enjoyment out of that.

I almost refuse to stand in long lines. Not because of fear of an incident like this - but I just won't.

we have gotten to the point where people have chat GPT write their WPD posts... "In the first section of this essay, the setup, we delve into" no human wrote this shit

Where crowds are I am not. People do things in crowds they would never do on their own.

Yup. I used to have a T-shirt, and, I can't quite recall, but it may have said:

"Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups."

or something like that.

Sorry, but this doesn't make it to an Effortpost, in my opinion.

From the writing in this post about this incident, I don't see ANY explanation that really explains HOW this disaster happened.

And I found the Wikipedia article about this even much, much more interesting. I recommend you read especially the later parts of the Wiki article if you are interested in this event:

It's ChatGPT and thus, contains little to no useful information. It's basically the opposite of an effortpost

On top of that the images are low quality, they could've even explained that in image #4 family and friends we're identifying their loved ones by their clothes and costumes because Halloween :marseyunamused:

Rotten mango?

I spent quite a bit of time reading the Wikipedia article about the event. There was lots written about the political response after the event - and it was VERY complicated, with cops deleting reports that there were warnings beforehand that this could happen, and deleting reports of calls saying people had already been crushed to death (11 calls) - LONG before the police responded.

But what was most noteworthy, was that among the many many groups of competing political interests who wanted to investigate the tragedy, or cover it up - there was a significant push to censor news reports and photos of the event.

Photos online were taken down, and only blurred photos were allowed - that didn't identify the victims.

News reports about the incident were asked by official government sources to not be spread.

This was massive censorship.

This might help explain why videos/images are shitty quality.

White knights didn't want the families of victims to see their loved ones in the photos or videos - which I understand - but that is 100% opposed to the goal of this website.

I don't see it in any of these photos, but I've seen other photos of this incident, where there was a very dense crush of people, up against a fence, I think, and at the back of this crowd there was an area of a couple feet with nobody standing there, and there were cops right behind that.

And people in that crushed area were still alive.

I don't understand why the cops wouldn't grab the people at the back of that crowd and pull them off the pile.
