looks like an exploding pressure cooker. You need to get one with a safety valve and make sure that thing is clean and works properly.

Pressure cookers are fine. You just have to make sure the valves work properly. Maybe the lid wasn´t closed properly, that can happen too on some models. The good ones (Hawkins for example) can´t even be closed the wrong way.
Many things in our everyday lives can be dangerous if we don´t know how to use them correctly. Lawn mowers, chain saws, electric drills, angle grinders, meat grinders, knives and so on.
