Don’t be fooled stairs are hella dangerous too. Maybe more so than elevators. The fall risk is real.

I think there was an episode of Freakonomics where they discussed this. Their finding was that psychologically, people are more afraid of things that are outside of their control (airplanes, elevators) even if they're less dangerous than things within their means of control (cars, stairs).

Honestly this explains a lot of the irrational fears people can have on this site, like amusement park rides. You’re more likely to die on the way to the park than in it.

Also, the types of fears of deaths can increase or decrease due to changes in circumstances. For example, people became a lot more afraid of dying in a terrorist attack after 9/11, even though it's an incredibly rare cause of death.
