In many places it's actually illegal for cyclists to ride on the sidewalk.
They usually have a space between vehicular traffic and the sidewalk for bikes. Key word here being "usually".

I think England has some of the worst drivers...I live in London and have NO problem riding on the sidewalks (even when not designated), I will take the fine if they can catch me.

Not saying its the best place for a bike, just saying its better than the fucking road. 1) he would still be alive, 2) insufficient room between traffic and sidewalk and not a designated bike lane = its 100% his fault and bus driver isn't liable.

Nope. Because in all likelihood bus driver didn't see him at all, or at the very least in time to slow down. Given the average deceleration speed of a bus. Correct answer still comes from 2nd grade common sense class: don't ride your bike in the fucking road.
