looks like it was lined on the inside with brick. Isn't that mainly just held together with pressure and friction from the nearby bricks? I mean i know they obviously use mortar, but these are usually built bottom-up and at the top there's less mortar just due to the fact that the pressure from above pushes the bricks into place. If you disturb the brick beneath it's like taking the foundations away from the roof
