A man died on Tuesday afternoon (28) after cutting his leg while slaughtering a pig in Gentil, a municipality of 1,700 inhabitants in the north of Rio Grande do Sul. The incident occurred in the town of São Valentim, in the interior of the municipality, at around 5:15 pm.The victim was identified as farmer Zilmar Salvatico, 54 years old. According to the Military Brigade, the man was located by neighbors lying near a shed on the rural property.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police identified that the victim had a cut on his right leg with the potential to reach the femoral artery, causing excessive blood loss.
According to the police, there is evidence that Salvático died when the animal was collapsed, at which point the person performed a maneuver of pulling the hide down with the animal hanging. At that moment, he would have hit himself in the leg with the knife. He died at the scene.
According to the Civil Police, the case has been clarified: it was an accident, as stated by delegate Norberto Rodrigues, responsible for the case.

Its better to cut off the leg instantly if that happes because the body has some kind of "compartment syndrome", if enough nerves are severed (stop sending signals) the body activates a vasoconstrictive mechanism resulting in closing and decreasing all blood vessels around the area of the cut off body part thats why you bleed out way slower when an entire arm or leg is cut instead of a main artery. But you're not accounting for what happens to your ability to act when you start to lose blood quickly.
I've stupidly cut down to the bone once while holding a pair of bike front forks, which trying to cut them with a saw, and another time I drove a chisel down to the bone on the same hand - and even with a tiny injury like that, my world was spinning, and I came very close to passing out - and I'm not easily shocked. I've repeatedly torn off my toenails after they grew deformed many, many years ago from injuries. Rather than growing normally, they now just get thicker and thicker and thicker, until, for the comfort to fit in my shoes, I take a pair of plyers and yank away.
Tearing a nail off hurts - but it's nothing like the pain that happens after the toenail grows a 2 day old covering over the bare flesh where the nail once was, and when you go to stand up, and the blood rushes in to put pressure on that new scab - well that is 5 times worse than the pain of tearing the nail off in the first place.
If I had someone to hold a camera for me - I might take some gore videos of me taking plyers to my toenails - and yanking them completely off.

This is actually exactly the kind of injury where a tourniquet makes sense. Granted, the femoral may retract when injured, especially once hypovolemia sets in. But the injury seemed relatively low on his thigh. Sacrificing the entire leg at the hip might have saved his life, if done literally immediately.

If that injury had happened to a soldier, and he had a tourniquet, then OK - but there was nobody to help him, and he had nothing on hand to tie off his thigh. And he lost the ability to act pretty soon after he became aware he had a big problem.
The advantage you and I have as armchair quarterbacks is we've seen enough of these videos that we would jump in and squeeze the fuck out of the leg of someone we saw this happen to - but most people don't have a clue what to do. Heck, the number of people who pick up and shake someone who has just broken their neck is appalling.
