It happened on July 28 2021 in Shakopee, Minnesota. The woman was Dominican born America Mafalda Thayer and she was killed by illegal Cuban immigrant Alexis Saborit, her boyfriend of 7 years, after she told him she wanted to break up with him. He has an extensive criminal record with charges for domestic assault, DUI, running from an officer, arson and a previous conviction for domestic violence committed against Thayer. For Thayer's murder he was initially charged with second degree murder and had his bail set at $6 million.
In May 2023, Saborit was found guilty of 1st degree murder but was also found not criminally liable due to mental illness.
