I never understood why they climb it. Maybe there is a horde of gold on top and the Sherpas let them take anything they can carry.

For most people it's an incredible show of strength and determination. Which it is, it's been very commercialized and made much easier for the toursists by the sherpas. Nonetheless some don't make the journey and have to be left behind. I don't understand why people race despite the risks but some do it to entertain themselves and others do it to prove themselves.

The term 'Summit Fever' describes what you say, newstrag climbers rushing to the top in order to break records that nobody really cares about (other than the hardcore climbing community) so they can post it on there Instagram.
It's gotten to the point where it's like, "The first ever Asian woman from Canada over 50 y/o with a pace maker etc etc." (There's literally a woman who died trying to complete this 🤣)
