All kinds of reasons, if you're in the trades. There's even chainsaw blades available (been meaning to purchase). However you must be prepared if it snags. I have put my grinder through miles of work, the only time it snags is with cutting metal but jerks only 1-3 inches.
I have NO clue how this happened if using properly. The handle on the right indicates he's a lefty. The direction of those blades would indicate the grinder would whip to the left thus more or less away from the body. Dude absolutely did this to himself.

I'm in the trades too, and like you I have a few kilometers of sparks and wood chips under my belt.
I admit to having had to cut wooden things with a grinder but only when my hand saw or my circular saw did not allow it.
Or that I was lazy to look for them
It's probably my easy access to adequate tools that makes me tend to judge.
I stand by my position, saying it's a bad idea... (99% of the time)
