Nah, they just do it sometimes. Once I've seen a video, in which a crowd was disturbung elephants herd. Then, one of the elephants started chasing them off. At one point, one guy tripped over and then this elephants just trampled him repedeatly, completly ignoring other people. Looks like elephants just prefer to overkill single targets.

It’s due to trama, like how a person stabs one person tons of times when they are in self defence, their body acts before they can think, elephant are a lot like us, so I wouldn’t put it past them that they do the same overkill as humans do, in the wild the elephant mother might have died to a poacher, and a car horn reminded it of the gunshot which killed her, causing it to rampage
