Brazil is a great country and is full of polite and friendly people, but like all of Central and South America, its a bit fucked up in places.

You know what, I'm sure there are a lot of good people even in in the shittiest countries in the world. I don't find this excuse convincing to exonerate the country. If society is plagued by enough "bad apples" the countries goes into the shithole category. It is like a jar of honey with a teaspoon of shit into it - you have to throw the whole jar away, despite there is some good honey in it.
