Distressing video appears to show a man set himself alight in front of horrified passers-by in Istanbul.

A clip shows the man engulfed in flames, prompting panicked as onlookers scramble to find a fire extinguisher.

Reports in Turkish media say it is unclear what prompted him to carry out the horrific act, and it is not known how seriously he was injured.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene.

It happened this afternoon in front of the historic Galata Tower in the Beyoglu district of the city.

The flames were put out by a fire extinguisher, and incredibly the man - who has not been identified - appeared to be able to speak with authorities after the shocking ordeal.

Footage shared online appears to show people taking selfies with the burning figure in the background.

A man and a woman are seen holding a phone aloft with their backs to the heartbreaking scene unfolding behind them.

It is claimed that the distressed man had been seen walking around with a sickle and gasoline in his hand for a long period before it happened, A3 reports.

The fire started about 11:08 PM, Thursday, February 20, 2003, just seconds into headlining band Great White's first song. This fire was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, killing 100 people and injuring more than 200. Ninety-six perished on the night of the fire, and four died later from their injuries at local hospitals.

The fire, from its inception, was caught on videotape by cameraman Brian Butler for WPRI-TV of Providence, and the beginning of the tape was released to national news.

An investigation of the fire by a Rhode Island state grand jury was started by then-Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch on February 26, 2003. On December 9, 2003, the grand jury announced indictments against Station owners Jeffrey and Michael Derderian and Great White road manager Daniel M. Biechele.

The three suspects were each charged with 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter with criminal negligence and 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter in violation of a misdemeanor.

Jeffrey and Micahel Derderian changed their pleas from "not guilty" to "no contest," thereby avoiding a trial. Michael Derderian received 15 years in prison, with four to serve and 11 years suspended, plus three years probation. Jeffrey Derderian received a 10-year suspended sentence, three years probation, and 500 hours of community service. Daniel Biechele pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to four years in prison.

The cause of the fire was pyrotechnics that ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. The fire engulfed the area quickly and it took a few minutes before people noticed the nightclub caught fire. People got trapped as the massive crowd pushed through exits leading to death caused by smoke insulation and crowd crushing.

The Station Memorial Park was built to commemorate those who died in the fire.

The Bradford City stadium fire occurred during a Football League Third Division match on Saturday, 11 May 1985 at the Valley Parade stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, killing 56 spectators and injuring at least 265. The stadium was known for its antiquated design and facilities, which included the wooden roof of the main stand. Previous warnings had also been given about a major build-up of litter in the cavity below the seats in the stand. The stand had been officially condemned and was due to be replaced with a steel structure after the season ended.

The incident happened on Saturday 29th July, Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro.

The victim, identified as Hugo Sérgio, both a bodybuilder and personal trainer, succumbed to smoke and fire, after trying to rescue his little girl. According to the newspaper 'O Globo', Sérgio noticed the flames taking over the apartment located in the Condomínio Caminhos da Barra, in the early hours of the morning and went back to wake his wife and daughter aged six years old.

According to reports from neighbours, Hugo asked his wife, identified as Larissa, to ask for help, however, he was unable to escape due to the ferocity of the flames. His cries for help clearly heard as he was consumed by fire.

"The wife went down to ask for help. Neighbours managed to enter the burning apartment and heard the child asking for help. She was burned. They called for Hugo but got no more response. Probably, the flames blocked the bedroom door and he couldn't get out ."

The fire brigade raced to the scene to get the fire under control. Hugo's charred remains were eventually found and removed for an autopsy.

According to the Municipal Secretary of Health, Hugo's wife refused assistance. The personal trainer's daughter, identified by neighbours as Maya, is in serious condition in hospital. The family dog was also rescued without sustaining injury.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
