I love it when elephants fuck people up because you actually have to be a piece of shit or around some pieces of shit for them to get after you.

I just made a post about this on my fb, how if an elephant was mean to me it would simply destroy my life.

Growing up I went to the small town fair every year and I would pay extra to ride the old elephant and I would sit there with it and talk to it. Ask it how's it doing and shut like that. I swear to god that thing could understand me and after 6-7 years I think it really knew me and that I had good intentions. Towards the end it would notice me coming towards and stop walking in circles with the kids on it's back and wait until I got towards his fence.

This is one of the most wholesome posts I've seen on this site. Absolute legend.

Animals are the only things I really have feelings for right away in this world. 9/10 they are just cool.

I notice that a lot of people on this site (including myself) are rightfully less forgiving of people who mistreat animals. I think it's because we see them as more vulnerable due to their limitations and because we are less familiar with them than we are with people, making them more fascinating (there are obviously more reasons, most dogs are bundles of joy with endless love to give and most cats are adorable, but I think this would be the broadest reason).

I think the vulnerability angle is also why people here have no tolerance for the mistreatment of children either (teenagers and young adults tends to be a little more context dependant) as their agency and understanding of their actions is more limited (as it often is for animals with certain instincts). It's much easier to be detached seeing an adult making a dumb decision and paying the price as they should be aware of their actions, but for a child its much more tragic.

animals obviously aren't always defenseless and vulnerable (see video above). The reason we can handle violence to adult humans is because we can imagine reasons they might deserve it.

Definitely, it's only really because of our tools and knowledge that we have any level of control over them. Before we became a hunter-gatherer species that used javelins and spears, humans used to actually be fairly unsuccessful in the African ecosystem.
