It's possible.
A majority of the time, those who have drowned do not inhale much water. It's called near drowning.
They mostly pass-out from oxygen loss. But, even a little bit of water in the chest or lungs will fuck you up. Damages blood vessels, ruining the blood supply.
There's a good chance that the little fucker actually did survive. Kinda unlikely, but not impossible.
