Pools are stupid.

Take up all your back yard, and you HAVE TO build a fence around them for legal liability to stop the neighbor kids from killing themselves.

I bet if you ask 100 people a year after they bought a pool - most wouldn't do it again if they had a chance to go back.

Only if you have a small back yard. Pools are a pain in the ass and the fence only needs to surround your back yard not the pool itself. That all said my wife and kids enjoy it so its worth all the bullshit.

It is a ton of work but it's worth it when people enjoy it

It may also depend just how warm it is where you live.

I've almost ALWAYS hated how cold pool water is.

But I was always SLIM. Now - not anymore - so I don't know if my feelings on water temps have changed.

We have extremely hot summers. The pool is a great feature.

My father has an in-ground pool and hasn't opened it for the past two seasons. He says people don't come over enough anymore to justify the time and expense. Grandkids are grown, mom died a few years ago, etc.

Regarding what you said about kids drowning..When my son was about two, we were over for a Sunday BBQ. Wife and I went inside for a second and somehow he made his way down the deck stairs and walked right over the side. The way dad told it, he was making burger patties when a strange feeling came over him, it was just too quiet. He looked outside and, seeing what was happening, ran down and pulled him up by the collar just in time. It only takes a minute, quite literally, and I still shudder to think how close we truly came to losing our son because of our own carelessness.

It's wonderful that we have intuition that sometimes sends you that six-sense message that something is wrong.

It really is an amazing thing sometimes.

It's scary how kids around this age are* always unintentionally trying to kill themselves, all because they just don't know better. I'm glad it worked out for your son, it must've been terrifying feeling how close it came to them just being gone. The guilt would be unimaginable if they succumbed to a scenario like that.

Obese hands typed this post. Pools are great fun for the whole family, and it creates a great pretext to invite friends and family over.

My HANDS aren't fat.

I hadn't thought about that.

I don't like them.

Maybe because I HATE cold water - and pools are almost never warm enough, and the requirements by law to put up fences just turn your yard into a divided jail.
