Been there myself, but it was in the ocean for me. Really scary experience. I can swim now but I still don't like being in the ocean.

How'd you survive? I just angled my body towards shore and started jumping for air

I was around toddler age or a little older. Family and I were at the beach, my dad and mom were drinking beer while my sister and I were building sand castles. Sister told me to get water from the shore. A bigger than average wave crashed over me when I was kneeling down to fill the bucket and I just went tumbling with the wave. My parents weren't watching but some guy there saw it happen.

I didn't know which way was up and wasn't strong enough to stop myself from rolling with the force of the water. I remember panicking, I think I inhaled a small amount of water but then I felt 2 hands grasp both my shoulders and heave me out of the water. Some random guy, a father I assume saw it and rushed over. Got down on his knee and asked if I was okay. I was in a daze and scared and just nodded and waddled back to where my parents were. Everyone said I couldn't even get water for sand castles and gave me a hard time. I told them what had just happened and no one believed me. I think they just didn't want to accept they were negligent of the whole situation. Even years later when I mentioned it they don't want to admit that could have happened.

I never thanked the guy, and I wish I had or I could go back and thank him. He saved my life. I was just shocked from the whole thing at the time.

Tl;Dr: Random dad saw me get toppled by a wave, he rushed over and saved me.

It was scary and definitely something I'll never forget. Anytime I'm around the ocean this is always on a back burner. I'm much more cautions around the water and look out for others due to it. I guess all I can do is pay it forward since I can't go backwards. I'll just try to be vigilant so I can stop someone's kid from drowning.

Also I didn't even remember I almost drowned (i was 6) until I was 23. I was watching samurai champloo and broke into a cold sweat when fuu was drowning around episode 20 or so

Samurai Champloo was great. Sounds like you've lived a wild life, it's weird when memories come back to you that you sorta blocked out. It's a surreal feeling for sure, then you get a taste of how you felt during it, common with traumatic experiences. I try to not let it get to me but the ocean scares me in other ways as well. I'm just a big pussy sometimes lol.

I don't let it bother me too much

I almost drowned, fell off a cliff, was in a car crash, hit by two cars, had 4 gun barrels in my face at once, got tazed, peppersprayed and beaten, even contracted a tetanus infection once

My body's worse for it, but I just don't feel like dying with a whimper. I know what you mean and understand about the experience staying with you
