Man swims too close to an electric pole, gets electrocuted and drowns

Happened in India.

The cause of his drowning is debated. some say the man was unaware that the water was contaminated (judging by the color of the water) so as soon as he jumped in, he was paralyzed by the contaminated water and drowned but the others say he drowned because he was electrocuted by the electric pole or wire nearby. the latter is more believable. either way RIP.

You can definitely see the poles and live wires in the water, but what exactly thrives in contaminated water to rise suspicions for paralysis in this scenario? Genuinely curious because that sounds terrifyingly easy to achieve by swimming in something as accessible as a lake.

Nothing that can paralyze you that Instantly, the only thing I know that locks a person up like that Instantly, is severe damage to the brain or electrocution
