So is this a layer of ice over a strong river? Wouldn’t they have known before digging out a perfect rectangle for suicidal diving? I thought people go into instant shock when diving into water like this for their first time? Regardless, I definitely know what I’m never doing.

To be fair, as long as you lower yourself into the water slowly you should be fine; as you'll feel if there's a current trying to drag you away - and if there is, you should be fine if you should hold one or both hands on the ice itself.

Since she jumped into the water, she landed at an angle and ended up under the ice immediately.

Gotcha, that’s really unfortunate then. Probably was just too excited to finally do her first ice swim.

The worst part is that they’re likely going to find her body in a connected body of water, and the kid will have to re-live this twice.

You should always have a rope tied around yourself anchored to something robust when doing this. But i mean, it's russians we're talking about.
