I've seen this "polar bear" type rituals before, but never into just a hole in the ice. Has none imagined someone could quickly suffer shock and then it becomes extremely difficult to retrieve them? Like, put a rope around them or a life jacket or something.

The sign of the cross did not appear to help in any way. Crazy how a slightly odd jump angle sealed her fate. The cold shock and panic might have forced her to fill her lungs with water then that’s it… surprised they couldn’t fish her out though she couldn’t have made it too far. Usually we do this where it’s shallow pretty close to shore where a sauna awaits. I wonder if that’s the case here or if it was a significant depth.

Well in the US Midwest it’s usually called a “Polar Plunge” there is typically a sauna on shore and plenty of emergency personnel. Generally the purpose is to raise money/awareness for some kind of charity.
