Tbf they're pretty retarded if it is, by the looks of it thats about 3ft deep which is just enough to cover someone. At 3ft you have a pretty good shot of escaping if theyre aren't any limiting injuries.. he is tied up though..

There was a video of 2 Ukrainian soldiers in a trench being shot by a Russian soldier allegedly wearing Ukrainian arm bands so I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that either the captors or the captive was trying to pull a fast one.
