If i were a thousand pound animal big enough to intimidate the mom, she'd run like this woman.
"I can make another kid" is louder than "oh my poor baby" because empathy isn't fully developed in most feral animals. Lionesses, gorillas and polar bears kill/eat their young. Exceptions arent the majority, they're the exceptions. Humans are animals but again we're an exception.

you do know that it's very uncommon for a mother to eat their young right?
it's more common that a male will kill the offspring of the mother so the mother is forced to have more kids. It quite literally is wired into animal brains to protect the young, and only when there's something wrong does that get overwritten.
