Why did it take so long to explode

The grenade doesn't start 'cooking' when you pull the pin but when you let the 'strike lever' go.

What happened is that the one who was supposed to throw the grenade 'froze' when he pulled the pin and didn't throw it. He kept the grenade with a tight grip that kept the strike lever in place but when they drove away he relaxed the grip and the striker mechanism went off, three seconds later the grenade went off.

The "Strike lever" is called a spoon so just a FYI (some grenades don't have that but most do) :marseyviewerstare:

It's possible he was holding the pin closed with his hand but in the car he dropped it. Grenade pins fling off when you let go of them so if it fell off, good luck putting it back on in the 6-8 seconds you have. Hell, I don't even know if you can un-arm a grenade once the priming pin is released.

The question is can you disarm a grenade before it disarms you?

Maybe, if your hands aren't shaking like hell because you're about to be blown up. Under calm conditions, it's easy, but after being in a ferocious shootout and then escaping with your criminal buddies... I'd imagine all of the men in that car are trembling from adrenaline and fear.

The easy solution would've been to simply toss it out the window once they were moving at a decent speed, but in the chaos after a gun battle....

If you put the spoon (if it has it) and the pin back than yes

Once the lever is released, you cant disarm it. The lever strikes the fuse which burns slowly into the detonator, theres no way you can remove the fuse in within just 3-4 seconds before it blows up.
