they do protect quite good against grenades/smaller bombs, it rly depends on the type of explosive and quality of suit.
this one was obviously old, sicne then they improved quite a bit. ofc not every country can afford the best and most expensive suits

Problem is, at some point it doesn't matter if you've got a suit on if the explosion is big enough, like wearing a seatbelt, because the blast fucks up your inside by sheet force rather than shrapnel

It does help, it just doesn't make you superman.
It's like seat belts. They save thousands of lives, but not people in the worst accidents.
Or bullet proof vests. They don't protect from headshots.
Even if it reduces bomb tech deaths by 10% or 20% that's worth it for a dangerous job.
