Modern combat really is inhumane, dying to someone that's probably sitting behind a computer in an air conditioned room... so much destruction at their fingertips, literally

Modern combat never was humane. In the middle ages I have read that common soldiers would typically just be executed if they were captured. The leaders that put them in that mess in the first place were ransomed, since their families had money, and it was considered dishonorable to execute a lord.
