A 14-year-old boy visiting from Missouri fell to his death late at night from a 430-foot-tall thrill ride at an amusement park ride along a busy street in the heart of Orlando's tourist district, officials said Friday.
Sheriff's officials and emergency crews responded to a call late Thursday at Icon Park, which is located in the city's tourist district along International Drive. The boy fell from the Orlando Free Fall ride, which opened late last year.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina on Friday identified the teen as Tyre Sampson, who was visiting central Florida from Missouri with a friend's family. Detectives investigating the death will look into whether it was intentional or accidental, the sheriff said.
"It appears to be just a terrible tragedy," Mina said. "We will see moving forward what that results in."
Sampson was taken to a hospital, where he died, sheriff's officials said. No additional details about the teen or the incident were immediately released.
The Free Fall ride and an adjacent ride, the Sling Shot, have been closed indefinitely, Stine said. His company operates the two rides at Icon Park.

I have seen this video many times, but it always saddens me, he was just a kid who wanted to enjoy the ride. I put the blame on the staff for not stepping up and doing their job, I have seen them reject people for their height, why not based on their weight?
There is another case of a young girl who got something wrapped around her foot and it got severed on the way down. That one is brutal too, but she survived.

there was also a time a man (vet) died from a coaster, he was a double amputee. Staff let him on, he was flung and died. They rlly need 2 be better at not allowing that when it's literally against the rules to be on that coaster for this reason.

Good eye. I looked at it again and yeah, you can see by the angle of his harness that it doesn't look the same as the others. The ride boss should have put his shoulder into getting another click on that latch.
A contributing factor is that a lot of rides make you rely totally on the seat latching mechanism, and have no good place to grab for a solid hold with your hands during the ride. I suppose it's to make the ride more thrilling and exciting, but it also gives the rider no way to hang on if the safety latch gives out.

I remember when I went to Universal Hollywood with my ex, who was a big guy, and we went on the Harry Potter ride the shoulder bars weren't fully clicking. The worker wasn't comfortable pushing down anymore so I was asked to. I was still anxious tho ya know?
