A 19-year-old student in china has fallen to his death from a roof of a high-rise building after the wall suddenly collapsed under him.

The tragic incident occurred at a residential district in Qinyang, Henan province on April 22 at about 1pm, according to local police.

In a horrifying video filmed by witnesses, the young man appeared to be making a phone call while standing dangerously on the edge of the 18-storey rooftop before the tiles came loose and caused him to lose his footing

In the footage, another witness was heard calling emergency services and telling them a person is standing on the roof of the building opposite them.

He was a senior high school student at a local private school, according to Henan Television citing police.

The office also said that the student had an argument with his family before the accident, without giving further details.

One of the teachers told Beijing Youth Daily the student suffered from depression and was always absent from classes.

However, before he could give the emergency operator more details to send help, the student had fallen.

He was pronounced dead on scene by paramedics.

The young victim has been identified by his surname Yang and police are not treating the incident as criminal, the Qinyang public security bureau said in a statement on April 22.

While I was tempted to mention "china = put random shit in concrete to save money", this guy was clearly standing on what amounted to 3-6 bricks worth of foundation with his right leg. That facade wasn't designed for that weight. I bet the people filming are thinking "is our building as flimsy too?".

I'm always surprised at how loud people are when they smack into the earth. He only fell for 4-5 sec, so he wasn't even at terminal velocity (~12 sec of free-fall is needed to reach about about 200km/h (124mph)).

This reminds me of the famous crayon man video where the guy gets trapped by the small wall he was standing on atop a building. He was essentially trapped, dangling over the edge with his lower half pinned and a decebt amount of blood gushing down. As he tried to wriggle free, the wall crumbled and he managed to use all his might to hang on a second or 2 before letting out the most bone chilling groan and scream ever and falling 20 storeys onto tram tracks. I'll never forget it. His mangled legs spraying as he fell. The pain in his voice.

I havent been able to find the video for years

I'll keep my eye out for that video...

It was called "crayon man" or is that just what you call it?

For a second, or maybe half a second, it looked as though he might actually grab hold of the edge and pull himself back up, But, alas, this was not to be. <sigh></sigh>

Standing there that close to the edge is a death wish in the first place - whether or not the concrete is made from boogers and sawdust probably doesn't matter that much. Even a wee breeze at the wrong time could cause a fatal loss of balance. Seems this poor chap might have been a bit unbalanced to begin with, if his classmates and teachers are to be believed.
