He heard someone screaming or a loud sound from above and instincts had him jump from where he was, in case something was falling at the spot he was, and he starts looking up as well. It just happened that the girl was in front of where he moved out of the way. You can see him look up as he blocks the girl.
It was just bad luck for her, also she could have been more aware and looked up as well. You can see the guy follow the jumper down with his head and move some more as well.
After that, his reaction is just shock. He could have died, he just saw two people die. It came out of absolutely nowhere as well
