First Ever Death Recorded (failed parachute jump)

Original Video - https://old.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/vy8flc/first_death_ever_recorded_franz_reichelt_18791912

This was the first death ever recorded of Franz Reichelt (1879-1912) who was an inventor. He made the first ever parachute which back then was a wearable suit for pilots that would expand into a parachute should they need to eject themselves from their aircraft. He was so confident that his invention would work that he decided to test it out by jumping off the Eiffel Tower.

He had tested the suits with dummies, the results were disappointing.

He had tested the suit himself, jumping from a much lower hight, into a haystack. The suit didn't work.

The police allowed him to jump from the Eiffel tower only under the condition that he use a dummy first.

People told him his suit wouldn't work.

So he knew it wouldn't work, everyone else knew it wouldn't work. Despite all that, he jumped from the Eiffel tower. That was pretty much suicide.

His balls of pure steal made him fall a lot quicker

Objects fall at the same rate, whether it is steel or glass they both fall at 9.81 m/s per second.

Air resistance affects objects differently though. a steel ball would tend to cut through the air more than a lot of less dense objects.

Yes and no. Air resistance will definitely affect the object, but it has to do with shape, not the material itself. Circular (spherical), square (cubic), airfoil, all these shapes have different responses to air flow, the material does not matter here.

I never knew Albert Einstein joined WPD

Material matters because the heavier the object is, the less it is accelerated due to air resistance.

A beach ball and a boulder that are identical shape and volume fall differently.

The first death ever recorded on film was the hanging of William Carr in 1897.

I remember reading that Franz mentioned to a peer that he had doubts it would work as he was suiting up. You can clearly see his hesitation to jump. Pride is a motherfucker.

Now. I've always wondered why parachute companies have such good reviews. This answers it. :marseyhesright:

You don't have to ask a question if you don't want to, it's just if you would like more context or something

isn't jumping on water safer? Especially when you try a thing you don't know about

Jump in the discussion.

Not from the height that he was trying to test it from, he still would've been injured no matter what plus I don't know if there would be a place in France where he could jump off from that height into water. He was also certain that his invention would work so he just went for it.

Wasn't a parachute it was a bird suit

I have often hesitated, just like that, mesmerized, before a jump, and then, not jumped. Now I don't feel bad about that.
