Gunfire cracks back and forth across Lem Turner Road for almost half a minute as muzzle flashes from the fleeing gunman are seen in the dark and two Jacksonville officers return fire that January 8 night.

At one point, the officer pursuing the man pumps 10 shots across the road, with puffs of smoke from his gun visible on one of two bodycam videos released by the Sheriff's Office of the year's first police shooting.

The chase ends with Teronnie Austin Wade facedown on Lem Turner as one officer tells another that the injured man is still armed. Then officers order the 27-year-old not to touch the gun as he is handcuffed, the weapon visible under the body armor he is wearing.

"Don't reach for anything if you can hear me," one officer tells Wade, his gun still pointed at the prone man. "... Do not move. You will get shot if you move, OK?"

"Yes sir," Wade says twice. "I got nothing sir."

The shootout occurred about 1 a.m. following a traffic stop near the Walmart there. One of the officers had pulled over a Lincoln sedan with five people inside for making an illegal U-turn at a red light.

Seen on the video holding both hands out the window, driver Yolandus Jones is cooperative while stopped in the Big Chief Tire parking lot at Lem Turner and Dunn Avenue.

The officer radios for backup, then asks him to roll the back window down so he can see inside. Police said the officer also detected the odor of suspected marijuana.

Jones tells the officer there are no guns inside when asked. When he says he left his license at home, the officer advises he's going to be put in the back of a police cruiser.

Another officer arrives and they open the front passenger door to reveal a man later identified as Wade, wearing body armor. When asked if he has a medical marijuana card by the first officer, Wade says he doesn't answer any questions.

"I don't talk to the police, sir," Wade says. "I'm a passenger."

The first officer repeatedly tells Wade to step out.

"Do not reach behind your back," the officer tells him.

"I'm not reaching behind my back," Wade responds, both hands raised. "You are reaching for your weapon."

The officer says he's reaching for his gun because "you reached behind your back when I told you to step out of the car," the edited bodycam video supplying subtitles for most of the conversations.

The officer repeatedly orders Wade to step out, then ultimately grabs him.

"You don't know who I am," Wade tells the officer as he is pulled out.

"Stop reaching," an officer is heard telling Wade.

The bodycam video is frozen at this point, the Sheriff's Office adding arrows to point out the butt of a handgun with an extended clip sticking out under his body armor.

"I've got a weapon on me, sir," Wade says as officers appear to start handcuffing him.

"I know you got one," the first officer says.

A second later, an officer is heard yelling "Stop," followed by "Pull your gun out!" as Wade's hands are still behind his back.

"Put me in handcuffs, sir," Wade says. "Sir. You got me right here sir."

The officer orders Wade to get on the ground, but he breaks free and runs toward the front of the brightly-lit tire store. Store security video shows Wade running in front of the store, turning around to repeatedly fire at the pursuing officer as he flees out of sight.

The officer's bodycam shows him returning fire as he briefly hugs the tire store's wall for cover, dozens of gunshots echoing in the night. The officer runs out onto Lem Turner and fires again. More than 40 shots are fired during the 30-second chase and shootout.

Wade is seen lying on the road nearby after being shot. The officer requests an ambulance as he yells at the Lincoln, telling anyone still inside to stay put. He radios in that one suspect has been shot, while another has run down Dunn Avenue. Joined by other officers, their weapons drawn, they are seen circling back to the Lincoln, which is empty.

Wade was initially hospitalized in critical condition but ultimately jailed on two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, plus possession of a weapon by a felon and resisting arrest, jail records show.

He remains behind bars ineligible for bail, his next court appearance set for Feb. 15. Jail records also show he was out on bond for drug, weapons and resisting charges.

I'll just say, I'm halfway through the first video and that man is a man that understands that no matter what, in these circumstances, the "perp" always has the advantage. Since the cop can't just outright assume something deadly is coming the very next second, the dude is carefully acting in exaggerated motions and vocally active.

That's a good dude that's been through the ring.

edit: maybe not with that company......

If you look closely the cop strips this upstanding gentleman out of his business suit, dresses him into baggy clothing, plants the gun on him, sticks an antenna on his head and then controls him making him look like he’s a thug! /s

driver knew what was gonna happen from the start, 100%. also i mean the shooter is dressed up with a ballistic vest(?) and got an extendo. no way he ever planned to end that encounter peacefully.

based on the info provided by OP he was a felon so couldn’t have a gun. yet made it super obvious he had one. not a bright fella.

also love how the passengers fled too. prob wasn’t the only gun in the car.

If you’re black in America, every police encounter has the potential to be fatal for you, regardless of the actual circumstances.

If you think it can’t happen to you, just look up Daniel Shaver. The cop that murdered him got a PAY-OUT because he claimed he got PTSD from brutally murdering Daniel.

If you don’t stand up for black men & fight back against police brutality NOW, it’s only a matter of time before they start treating EVERYONE like that.

It’s already the case that taxpayers bear the cost of police brutality because individual officers have qualified immunity. It’s already the case that “I feared for my life” is a Get Out of Jail Free card for pigs anytime they murder someone. It’s already the case that you can be legally armed, with all the proper licensing, and they can still murder you and get away with it. It’s fucked.

Shaver was pasty white spraying bug repellent or something. Maybe research the people youre gonna use as a political token. Cops already do treat everyone but the rich and elite equally. We're their sheep.
